These stories are nothing but trolls to catch the reader's eye. They amount to the "Think you are safe in your home? tune in tonight at 10 to find out" stories.
Are we safe? Are you safe? Is your mother smarter than you? Are you dumb because of the clothes you wear? Are your clothes killing you? Is anyone out there? is this thing on? How much for the Ape?
I mean hell, serious discussion and thought drives humanity. But when it's all boiled down to short snippets between ads it sort of loses something.
Moral of the story? Read more books and get off my lawn.
How could we ever use this technology for non military purposes? Well let's see - most of the world's food supplies are delivered via the ocean. How's that for a start?
Also, since you have ideas for better robots, why don't you get off your ass and build one yourself?
Seriously, this "meh, I could've done better" post is very typical, yet very arrogant.
Kind of hard to steer a balloon too. Maybe a blimp?
But you don't see many blimps flying in wind above a few knots. For instance, flying into a 20 kt headwind (not uncommon at even low altitudes), a blimp would be standing still if not moving backwards over the ground.
There may be some more novel approaches to come, but a winged UAV is a practical unmanned vehicle that is cheap and doesn't require a trained pilot to fly. They aren't trying to invent a novel UAV, they are trying to study an ocean of air.
Apologies, I looked at your post first and GP was filtered.
I love your odds on humanity outgrowing it's own idiocy, I wish I was around to cash in because they seem pretty good.:-D
I think what's really insane is that there are people like GP in America who have a very thin grasp of reality, how thin America's "power" really is and how it relies on such blinded views to continue.
Yes and history would "march on", right into another empire. Most likely Russia or China or Europe lording over everyone. But let me guess, in this "what goes around comes around" view, the world has once and for all rid itself of elitist bent on world domination by this sneak attack right?
What is most insane is the view that the US is somehow the "most" evil, when in fact right now in every country elitists strive to control the populace through fear, oppression, and outright murder.
Name a country and I will show you a bunch of people that want to control you, having you work your life away to build their empire. Whether altruistic on the surface, the motives are almost always the same - to hoard as many resources as possible while trying to dominate man's "destiny".
My question is, how in the fuck's name was this modded insightful? It's nothing but hate. Hunting down Americans and killing them?
Hitler just called, he said "chill the fuck out you kook"
Yes but what if a chemical explosion was used to power the device? It would be the same as any gun, fairly inert and lightweight with the explosive charge being used to heat the metal and fire the projectile down range?
The same could be said for lasers, using conventional explosives to generate a lot of power in a very small time period and then project that power down range.
Actually what he's referring to how the idea was originally contrived in a scientific paper released by a Russian scientist Pyotr Ufimtsev but overlooked by the Russian military. A western engineer found it and presented it to Ben Rich at the Skunk Works who said stealth "fell into his lap" basically.
I highly recommend the book "Skunk Works" by Ben Rich, if anyone has insight into stealth technology and aeronautics it would be him.
Easy, you smoke dope until you think "faceboogle" is a neat word.
I will try later tonight and post my results.
In this day and age he's probably high on pills anyway..
I think "futurist" is becoming actually becoming a viable career path now. You don't even have to implement anything, you just spike a small barely working prototype, create a new word and bam, you're a fucking genius.
If anything good has come of Surface it is showing the "digital sign" market that this type of device will lead to more interaction.
Walking through a mall you see a digital sign, walk up to it touch it and it gives you more information. This is all available now, but things like surface get it exposed to levels that make decisions.
I work for a marketing company and as soon as surface was released our customers were asking for them. So I'd guess the interest is there. It's not specifically surface they want, we can use any choice. They just like the idea in general. But if I can get a development package that helps me push them out the door faster then so be it.
Yes but one could argue that more power consumption leads us to such power needs. How can you move to alternate energy production if everyone is consuming power at an exponential rate?
Also, using less power means less power produced. And since virtually 100% of all power produced impacts the environment..
It's a good thing because it's practical to save energy where we can. That's good engineering. Pay no attention to the bullshit marketing, which I'm sure we'll see a lot more of in the coming years.
No, it's true. I hate Apple. And to be fair most of the troll posts came from me. I single-handedly posted over 4.7 million anti-Apple messages over the past years to newsgroups, forums, email chain letters, viagra spams, and various others. It's all part of my, Operation: Black Turtle Neck? Strangle!
I've actually been riding a bike to work and back for about a month now, riding about 30+ miles each week. I have the opportunity to do so given my location from work and the nice weather here. It's a true life change. For instance, I rode in this morning watching the sun come up listening to birds chirping. Good times.
I specifically moved close to my job so I could do such things. Not everyone has that option but if you do it can be really nice. It cuts costs, improves my health, improves my mental attitude (like any good exercise), and allows me to laugh at fools who drive fuel tanks with wheels. It's not "easy", but few things worth doing are. I have racks and panniers for when I need to carry things like groceries and a BOB bike trailer for when that's not enough.
My next big "life coup" will be a grease car. I still keep a gas truck around to run errands, but I avoid it if possible.
When people ask me why I do it I really can't give them a clear answer. Sure it helps the environment, saves gas, etc. But it's more about living within my means and being smart than some altruistic reason.
True, it is a very tempting offer for indy mobile developers, particularly the distribution model. I like it. My reluctance really as to do with a two things: lock in and cost
1. Lock-in: iPhone is only as hackable as Apple allows, otherwise you are working without a net and risk an iBrick. Also, you are forced to use AT&T for a while until they have other carriers. 2. Cost: iPhone is just too much money, the device cost is reasonable but the AT&T plans are not. Yes the SDK is free, but the price versus the reward isn't enough for me. Others maybe, not me.
Again, this is just one man's simple opinion. I also don't develop for smart phones, that doesn't mean I'm 100% against them, only that developing for them doesn't appeal to me.
Wow, you actually had a good argument there until you went off on a rant about how naive anyone that questions Apple is.
Yes I am naive. Call me crazy but after close to 15 years of application development I remain skeptical of large corporations doing things in my best interest. Boy am I a noob. How foolish of me to question.
Simple fact is Apple has fan boys like yourself who will keep trucking regardless. Continue buying their overpriced shit "because it works" and thinking your smarter than the rest of us because you use a machine that they dumbed down. Logic doesn't enter your world I understand, but please indulge the rest of us and pretend that we have a clue.
Hear my tone? How I "look down my nose" at you? How does that feel you apple ass clown?
In the announcement Apple said they were working on a way for business to release applications internally. They seemed to imply without the need for iTunes.
AKA they don't have a way yet.
A lot of this rings hollow, the whole "BIG DEAL" about the iPhone. It's a nice device sure, but there are a lot of nice devices. I just don't see the appeal to developers considering that the distribution model appears locked down, apple seems hell bent on selling anything it can to developers (ever heard of FREE?), and apple has a hold on it like it's a gaming console. Why not target some of the newer devices where the vendors participate in the open handset alliance?
I can't quite put my finger on my objection, but something doesn't smell right. Maybe I'm just jaded by Apple rubs me the wrong way. They remind me of a bank that keeps making up new fees to charge me while they make money on _my_ money, the entire time pretending it's a privilege to be fucked so smoothly.
Like I've been saying to everyone around me - the cold war is on it's way back. It's not just pissing matches with China, but Russia too (who isn't broke anymore and has a brand new set of toys).
What's this mean for the average American? Well for one duck and cover. But two - WE'RE IN THE MONEY!! WE'RE IN THE MONEY!!
Nothing spurs an economy like a good old fashioned FEAR FUCK.
Yes but to be fair there is a difference between a 2.45Ghz microwave oven amplitude at 500W (if we use the classical wave point of view) and a small wifi transmitter around the same frequency at only 2W. Not as much energy is being transmitted from the cell phone so the term "microwave" can be misleading to someone automatically associating it with an oven and the inherent dangers.
We know how one effects our bodies (rapid heating of things inside us followed by extreme pain), not so much about the other.
Who gives a fuck?

I disagree. I think we can easily out run them or hide so we should be able to evade their complaints indefinitely.
Where is the compassion for my lack of caring! I want the right to not care goddamit. No one ever thinks about me.

In the other galaxy.. duh

I think you just created it - catchall. But the true innovation wont be seen until catchall 2.0

Ok, How about this for an argument? Your mother is a whore. See I don't bullshit around the issue like you pussy mac users.

The problem is we need to be fanatical about science, to the point that we look just like the religious kooks we mock.

Yeah but it has SCIENCE in the name! I mean anything that calls itself science must be so right? Not just anyone can add science to their name.
What? You don't find "whatcouldpossiblygowrong" tagged on every other article useful?
