Why is it that when robots don't act like something out of a fantasy movie people are a little disappointed? Get a grip on reality man. There is obviously a huge disconnect between the reality of robotics and fantasy.

Think of it this way - you're wondering why you can't get the really slick aqua theme on your desktop when the people writing the actual software are still working on getting a working 3-color display!

It's mainly for researchers to devise the best techniques for a humanoid, and then apply them to the real world using "real" robots that are yet to come. Think about it, all of the flaws you mentioned are the same engineering challenges they need to meet in future robots. This robot is simply a cornerstone to get started thinking about those problem sets. The solutions start in research labs and makes their way to commercial applications slowly but surely. But this is almost always the first step. Robotics is a new field after all, regardless of what the movies tell us.

Some have claimed it's for understanding, others claim it's because everything is designed for humans now so it would be most useful. But the man in me yells out ROBOPUSSY!

Although one could assume that anyone not classically trained in language is unintelligent, it would probably be wise to not make such assumptions. It is after all, just a protocol for exchanging information. For instance, can two highly educated people exchange ideas using Latin? It's not a standard language and most certainly falls outside of your accepted protocol. How about using what is often referred to as Ebonics or "street"? Would you assume the two parties are unintelligent because of their choice of language? If so then again, you are making a illogical assumptions. They could be using said language to communicate on almost any topic.

IMO as long as the message is communicated your objections to improper language become nothing more than exceptions being thrown by an inadequate parser and more focus should be spent on learning new aspects of language outside of your classical training.

I have t-mobile also but I use the built in wifi on my device and it's pretty fast. Over edge it's not something I want to do a lot, but on wifi it's nice.

IMO the main hurdle is the fact that most of the web is designed for PC browsers on larger devices with not as many restrictions. We need better mobile design across the board. Some sites are really slick, but some sites are so heavy they become impossible over a mobile device. This makes the experience even more painful. But if every site had a lightweight version specifically for mobile, well it would help a lot.

  8. Re:Stick to standards, mobile browser developers.. on Web Browser Wars Go Mobile · · Score: 1

The sheer volume of data one can display "per page" on the web versus mobile precludes that. It can be done but the problem is you end up with a generic page that can work on both platforms, specifically for the smaller resolutions and small memory footprint. So essentially you end up developing for the smaller and weaker platform.

But in real life the user wants the best on both platforms and such compromises simply don't work. We end up using the same data to display a different view of that data. Fortunately this has been a solid design pattern in UI design for as long as I can remember, the view.

For a good example look at www.cnn.com vs m.cnn.com and how different views call for a different design.

The government has been hijacked by a minority of people who have too much influence. So we get this view of "liberals" meaning people that hate western life in general, and "conservatives" meaning people that talk to god before making a decision. It's insane because the middle, where common sense is used, has been pushed aside for these extreme left and right leaning people. When you make an extremist like Thomas Jefferson look like a middle of the road kind of guy, you are an extremist!

Also missing is of course the features that haven't been rolled out yet.

But this is all normal for any large first release, particularly an open source community effort. For instance, how much has changed in any major open source release such as GNU/Linux, Apache, etc? Developers should understand that because this is a new release and because things are changing as developers dig in, this will be the case for a few years to come. Android isn't a polished OS like Symbian just yet, but at the same time you get what you pay for.

Yeah I agree. I did the same when starting out and that's half the fun. A basic kit you buy will almost always contain a bread board, a power supply, some wire, and some basic elements like LEDs. All of these can be found in one trip to radio shack with little effort.

For instance here could be a basic kit:

    - Bread board

    - 6V-12V power supply. I prefer the ones that allow you to choose amperage

    - pack of LEDS. Blue LEDS are purdy

    - Wire. Radio shack and others sell wire "kits"of different lengths or a spool.

    - Basic multimeter. Great for when things don't work

    - pack of components. Transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc. And of course the whole reason I do this - some nice 8 bit chips.

Again, all of this stuff can be bought in a quick trip to radio shack. Once you get the basics you can dig into the real online "part bins" like DigiKey.com or Mouser.com.

Hell one with the decision making abilities of a bird would be a nice start. And on and on..

    On a tangent:
Intelligence is such a broad word, and then to tack on Artificial. AI lacks a precise meaning and if anything needs to be done in the world of AI, it's to create a nomenclature that makes sense and provides a protocol of understanding.

For many the word AI simply means "human brain in a jar" but that's just one small branch of AI sciences. But where is our Fujita Scale of artificial intelligence? Where is out toolkit of language (outside of mathematics)?
