What a circus. Google isn't forcing anyone to use its search engine. If the EU has such a massive problem with a company promoting it's own businesses in the course of FREE use of its search features, then they can just block Google altogether. Good luck with Bing! I hope Google tells them to F off.
The community college I went to was pretty laid back with most instructors being called by their last name. The other community college in the district was more uptight with instructors insisting on being called "Instructor" before their last name. Never understood that stick-up-the-wazoo attitude, as they were teaching the same material and getting paid the same rate.
I'm a full time engineer who has taught a few classes. I felt like things worked better when I wasn't really positioned above the student. I taught the classes as I'm an engineer and I'm going to try to bring you up to the same level of knowledge. How you e-mail me, how you address me, I don't really care as long as it isn't offensive. When we get to homework or projects, I will tell the students up front it better be written up properly or it will be graded down. But there is time for being formal and time where it just doesn't matter.
I agree. I teach IT at a community college. My students generally call me by my first name. Some opt for Mrs... a few title me with "professor" (which I am not) and I have a few military students who call me Chief. Apparently, I am tough but fair. I like to be approachable. I want my students to feel comfortable asking questions. I am not the sanctimonious type. I do not feel that I am any better than any of my students. I was once in their position. The key to managing a classroom is making your expectations clear from the very beginning and actually read their homework. I spend a lot of time reading homework and grading hard, especially at the beginning of the quarter and most especially with entry level courses. As for poor email communications, I will reply with, "This is unintelligible. You need to use complete sentences, punctuation, and real words." Student love the speech to text features of their phone, but the resulting messages grate on my nerves.
I am part of a liberal FB group that posts stories of inequality or triumph over inequality. One female teacher posted a story about a male colleague who was complaining to her that a student questioned his decision about an assignment and then argued with him when she didn't like the answer. The female instructor told him "welcome to my world where students argue with me all the time" I am floored by this. You get the respect you command. If you respect your student's time and abilities and are prepared and flexible at times, the students will be respectful of your decisions. I very rarely have had any trouble with students in the last 10 years of teaching. There is always troublemakers, but they are few and far between. Now if I could just get the students to understand critical thinking and not be so concerned with being "right" all the time....
You can bet the NSA has dirt on all the politicians. They can't say boo because it would be the end of their career. It isn't possible to get to the highest levels of politics without stashing a whole shed full of skeletons.
This is a huge problem in all of education. You don't teach because you want to get rich on an 8-5 job. It is really hard to find people who are good at programming/networking/Information systems/apps/DB's etc who are also good at teaching and have the desire to teach.
The medieval model of university would have a chance to work at the university level as most of those people truly want to learn. I teach CS at a community college and it's more like babysitting than teaching, most days. And since I have lab classes and unpredictable (crappy) equipment, I put in more hours than is reasonable and no way would I teach for a "nominal" compensation.
what a load of crap. We had tons of rules and safety precautions that we had to take when I was an undergrad in chemistry. The problem is people who think they are invincible against battery acid and other such dangerous chemicals. If you made it to college, one would hope you have enough common sense to follow the safety rules and not be careless, but an amazing amount of less than intelligent life manages to sneak through admissions.
I hate unions. I think this is hilarious. It makes a real statement about how americans are still valued, but our expectations are screwed up when it comes to wages vs. cost of living. We all want to be billionaires, but we want all of our goods and services cheap. That is an unrealistic expectation and just plain bad math. The unions that preach the BS are driving companies into the ground. It's no wonder they outsource.
I take it you are not a breastfeeding mother. Well, I am and it isn't always easy to "be discrete". My son would have a fit if I tried to put a blanket over him while breastfeeding. do you know how hot it would get? Why don't you get a bottle of warm water, lay on a heating pad and put a blanket over your head while trying to drink. Lets see how long you last before you feel like you are going to die of asphyxiation. It takes 15 mins to an hour to feed a baby. I am so sick of prudish people.
Why not just prosecute the hell out of child molesters that are caught? What a novel concept. If we start executing these sickos I bet we would see a HUGE reduction in child porn without the phenominal costs to ISPs and users for a "solution" that will be easily defeated if you know what you are doing.
But what am I saying? I don't need freedom and rights - that's way over rated. Search my bytes.
Absolutely. And I think it is pathetic that this situation ended up in court. The principal should have been able to call the parents and expect that the girl would be beaten within an inch of her life. But if she had decent parents, she probably wouldn't have made such slanderous statements in the first place.
In my opinion, the parents need to be put on trial for the criminal acts of minors. If you have a child that behaves criminally, you should be charged with some sort of neglect. Perhaps we could stem some of the crime and the welfare culture. I am tired of people having children and not being bothered to raise them properly.
I concur. Not about the UID since I was a lurker for many years, but I think the disagree mail is hilarious. There are a lot of crazy people out there. I like knowing I am not alone.
Amen. It is soooo hard to find a good PC tech. We just did interviews which included a test and I ended up settling for someone who was trainable. And before my boss hired me, he had been through 3 other techs in a year. A test is mandatory. I can't stand working with stupid people or worse, people who think they know what they are talking about.
I have always done tests for jobs and been happy to do it. It lets me know what I am getting into and it lets the employer know what they are getting from me. Besides, tests work to my advantage because I can still get calls despite having my BA in French.
and unions make that fat float better and faster. We are facing layoffs at my job, but no exempt employees are being laid off. My boss kept the IS dept out of the union because he hates unions (one of the major reasons for me choosing this job). But I am watching all of our young skilled workers leaving or getting cut because of "bump rights". all we will be left with are the old bags who show up to socialize and collect their too big paycheck. Screw unions - they are more harmful than helpful and if people don't like long hours as a salary employee, then go somewhere else. Skilled IT people don't have problems finding good jobs. I know I don't.
I hope he gets off scott-free. Good for him for exploiting the scum of the earth. Stupid scum of the earth at that. If you don't want something known, don't tell other people. And for god's sake, how much of an idiot do you have to be to send pics and then have faith that the stranger you sent them to will keep them private?!!
If he is cheating on his wife, he is exposing her to STDs. He needed to be caught.
Oh BS. Use an FDE drive and lock down the USB ports so that they can't hook a mass storage device to it. You still run the risk of them putting the FDE password on a sticky, so better yet, give them a dumb terminal and force them to VPN in to access data. they won't be able to save anything locally and you can still lock it down to prevent mass storage devices from being used.
This is, in essence, true. A programmer job with the State (at least the state of WA) is a high level job. even if it's just writing VB scripts. It pays well, so you can't get it unless you have the BS in CS and a billion years experience. And as another poster mentioned, the unions are dragging the system down even farther and letting all the dead weight float to the top. People wonder why so many state govs are in financial crisis. well, duh.
Except if the BES admin is competent, they have a 10 minute timeout on the device with a lock on holster, secure passwords with a wipe after 5 wrong tries and a policy to wipe the device if it hasn't contacted the BES in x amount of days - Mine is 10.
So if the above were the case, the only way I could see it getting compromised is if she used soft hacking and got him to tell her the password. But I agree with a previous poster, if she stole it, she most likely sold it for a few bucks on the street.
or we created grunge out of angst over shitty internet speeds
I'm really surprised our president and the mexican president don't get along better.

Still her fault. She took digital nudie photos with an idevice. Get that girl a darwin award.

United we stand, divided we fall. Oh how we have fallen.
Regardless of whether Apple's claims are true or not, I think it is awesome that Apple called the government malicious hackers.
That ethanol laced fuel fouled more plugs and plugged my carb than I can count on my dirt bikes. I will be glad to see it go.

As long as he usually pays his taxes. Someone checked on that first, right?
