  1. Re:Another M$ ploy to co-opt an existing technolog on Microsoft's New Language · · Score: 1
I propose naming the language WINJ, because there seems to be a lot of whinging about it.

  2. Re:Falling Down on Douglas Adams Answers (Finally) · · Score: 1
Falling Down is a great movie, but it's not a comedy. And in fact has no real relevance to what DA was saying because his point was that Americans don't like heroes who have no control over their lives. Michael Douglas, aside from being insane, is in complete control until the end of the movie.

  3. Re:How does ZoneAlarm identify a program? on Mattel Spyware · · Score: 1
Not sure about ZoneAlarm because I use Private Desktop (not free), but the way it works it identifies the .exe file (along with a complete path) which is trying to connect.

  4. Re:Napster will almost certainly lose, eventually on Revenge Of The MP3 Quickies! · · Score: 1
Napster will lost by trying to straddle the divide between corporate interests and its users. It became popular with college kids when it was made by college kids, but now you get quotes like Parker saying he wants "to grow our user base, and then use (this) user base coupled with advanced technology to leverage the record companies into a deal." I'm not convinced he really said that. I mean, what kind of twenty-year-old geek uses words like 'leverage' and 'advanced technology'?

Hopefully when Napster either gets shut down or changes its policy, Gnutella will be ready for prime time.

  5. Re:Victoria on Microsoft Enticed To Move To British Columbia · · Score: 1
Does it matter where they move? I also live in Victoria, and I agree they could relocate here, no problem. They could go anywhere. Microsoft is big enough that a city will spring up around them, wherever they go. Redmond wasn't much before they got big and their 20,000 employees started spending money. They could go to Duncan or Nanaimo... heck they could buy a gulf island and rename it MS Island(tm).

  6. How the decision was made... on Canadian "Big Brother" Database Scrapped · · Score: 1

  7. Ani on At Last And At Length: Lars Speaks · · Score: 1
Most of the people I know who listen to Ani DiFranco are 20-something hippie feminists. Whether they actually like the music is hard to determine, but I suspect they just like the dogma she's preaching. I listen to a wide variety of music, and while I won't say she's the worst musician I've heard she's certainly down there. The funny thing is that her last album didn't suck quite so bad and her longtime fans accused her of selling out. Hee hee.

  8. Re:How Does This Happen? Addition on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1
Well, yeah, but that's where persistance comes in. If you do the search once and get no results, that doesn't mean you won't get anything if you do the search later. It alll depends on who's online.

  9. Of course they do on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1
I have a bunch of top 40 mp3s. Why? Because it isn't worth buying the whole album. I still buy as many cds as I ever did, and I have never bought top 40 cds, but now I can listen to the various one hit wonders that have come and gone.

  10. Re:How Does This Happen? Addition on Napster Hurts Album Sales? · · Score: 1
I look at web sites, talk to people, read reviews. They list bands that are similar to bands I like. The bands will never be played on the radio, and MTV doesn't even acknowledge the genre, so how am I to know if they're any good?

  11. Re:Good/tough questions. Too bad they're irrelevan on Our Attorney's Response To Microsoft · · Score: 1
If I recall correctly, only one AC post actually included the copyrighted material. Others were links and commentary and lord knows what else. So in effect Andover is doing what MS did: widenning the debate. Or if you prefer, arguing at 90 degrees to each other.

If government did less, it would need to get smaller. But bureaucracies never shrink, they expand until there is no money left for anything else.

  14. Re:I'm fed up with being told what to think on The Cluetrain Manifesto · · Score: 1
Memes are the antithesis of free thought. You can't brainwash people into thinking for themselves.

You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think.

  15. Re:Remember New Coke on Where Daemons and Dragons Collide · · Score: 1
New Coke was the best thing to happen to Coca Cola Inc since WWII. At the time, Pepsi was gaining market share and according to some reports had passed Coke in overall sales. Which is why they released new Coke in the first place. Then the hard core adicts made all kinds of free publicity by hoarding old Coke and writing letters, and Coke Classic was 'introduced' and propelled them back into top spot.

  16. Re:USPTO Bottom Line yielding bottom feeders? on Bryar Takes On Patents And Their Friends · · Score: 1
They need some sort of objective metric, after all.

God forbid their managers should have to evaluate their work and use judgement.

  17. Re:MODERATE THAT UP! on John Carmack Enforcing the GPL on Quake Source · · Score: 1
According to the records, a total of seven moderator points have been wasted moving your little story up and down. Since you seem to just be looking for attention, be happy. You got plenty.

Well, get on with it then. And let us know when you succeed.

  19. Cute idea on A New DeCSS · · Score: 3
I think a better way to show support is by posting the source to the real DeCSS. When people say "I'm Spartacus", it's more effective if they don't follow it up with "but not that Spartacus".

  20. Re:Amen on Interview: Jon Katz Answers · · Score: 1
It is a rare man indeed who can write so much yet say so little. The l0pht interview may have been longer, but I wished they had answered more questions. I skimmed Katz's answers and still feel I've wasted my time. This interview has convinced me to turn on the filter--there really is no hope for him.

  21. Re:Stradivarius on Tesla: Erased at the Smithsonian · · Score: 1
I saw a show on (I think) Discovery a while back about a guy making violins in all sorts of crazy shapes which sounded great. He'd come to the conclusion that what gives a Stradivarius violin its sound is the quality of the varnish.

  22. Re:Other MS activity in Europe. on EU Competition Commission Investigating Win2k · · Score: 1

Yeah, like the Kasparov vs The Internet fiasco. That would never happen either.

  23. Re:Anti-Thought on Interview: Ask Jon Katz Almost Anything · · Score: 1
Most of the atheists I know are more than a little agnostic. Rather than saying "there is no god" they say "I don't think there is a god". And yes, if pressed they will reveal that they have put quite a bit of thought into it.

As to your third point, it is impossible to disprove any theorem. Note UFO's, Bigfoot, and Nessy. You can go through case by case and debunk every argument and proof offered, and you will never disprove anything.

Another cunning way they killed consumer DAT was by putting a 'tariff' on blank DAT tapes so they would cost more than a CD.
