>You can sort of understand cutting funding to things like behavioral sciences or research on frogs or something. Their benefits are not always obvious to the layman.
That just shows the lack of understanding you have about those subjects, which is the same lack of understanding the general public has about science in general.
Depends on a lot of factors. I assisted in two different university labs and my experience in both were pretty different. First one was a smaller lab with two grad students and a post-doc. Since it was my first time in a lab, not much is expected from an undergrad. Just learn as much as you can about proper procedures and read up on literature that is relevant to the work being done in a lab. Since it was a smaller lab, I was always in contact with the PI and we always had discussions.
The second lab I was in was larger with two postdocs, five grad students, a lab tech, and another undergrad with me. Since I already had some experience, I didn't have to learn all the intro stuff. I was assigned to work on a project with one of the grad students and didn't have much contact with the PI since he was so busy. My advice is to completely understand what the research is about and why they are doing it and continue asking questions and advice. You won't be expected to solve any major problems that the lab is working on so just learn as much as you can. I found the labs to have a very relaxed atmosphere but I guess I got lucky and it will be different for other labs out there.
??? I don't get it.
Columbia University is one of the best universities in the country. What's with the 'nuff said? If it has to do with Ahmadinejad giving a speech there, then you need to grow up and get your head examined.
I find this really hard to believe. I have a frew friends with vista and leopard on their macbooks and leopard runs circles around vista. It doesn't use as much resources and everything runs quicker.
Although I understand that if you post something on the internet, info or pics may be viewed by people that you don't want viewing them (ex: a friend of yours on facebook finds a pic you uploaded really funny and posts it somewhere else), this does not mean that facebook should start giving away info to whoever requests it.
I currently have a facebook account and only my closest friends are facebook friends with me. Everything else is private and nobody can even search for me or know I exist on facebook. I haven't installed any apps and have beacon turned off. I try the best to protect my privacy and facebook should not being going around giving info away like this.
That is incorrect. Just b/c natural evolution didn't produce something yet doesn't mean it is not possible. A common fallacy is thinking that whatever species exist today are the pinnacle of evolution. It doesn't work that way. There is always some mutation that can happen that can produce something new.
Oh Please, nothing is going to change. McCain will just keep the status quo and Clinton is just Bush 2.0 with a healthcare plan backed by her buddies in the pharm industry.
Creationism and evolution are both articles of faith, and really have no purpose for MOST students. Then again, I truly believe that even High School is worthless for 70% of society considering what it is churning out.
This shows you lack of understanding of science. Evolution is not an article of faith the way creationism is. Evolution is an idea that is supported by numerous facts and evidence collected for decades. If there was another theory to come up that made more sense and fit the data better, scientists would not say "but I have faith in evolution", they would perform their own tests and make their decision.
And saying it has not purpose is once again shows your ignorance. Since when does education, especially evolution which is the most basic concept of biology, has no purpose. All advancements in medicine in biotech are due to our understanding in science.
It will be interesting to see what type of schools in what countries do better. I participated in the Panasonic robotics competition held in NJ when I went to high school. A majority of the time, it was the private schools that end up doing the best.
Just b/c you may find the experience uncomfortable doesn't mean everyone else does. Any apple store I've been to has always been crowded (I've gone to the ones in NYC and some in NJ). Compared to other stores, I found the employees to be helpful since they like macs so much and while the genius bar isn't full of geniuses, they really try their best to help you out as much as they can. As for most people buying imacs or macbooks these days, there aren't joining a cult, they either are sick of windows or just want the latest "in" laptop. They will use email, internet, and ms word or excel and not have to worry about installing anti-virus or anti-spyware software and have a system which is secure.
Not necessarily true.
Some professions will require a focus with no interruptions at all (such as someone else asking for help with an unrelated task or answering a phone). If you had a surgeon operating on you, the last thing you would want is the surgeon getting an interruption of some sort. Some people just happen to have such focus and can get a job done really well that you should keep interruptions at a minimum such as demanding a reply to an email that can be answered to later.
I've seen some really low-end pc's (512 mb ram, integrated graphics chip) with vista pre-installed. I can't even imagine how slowly vista would run on those computers.
The kernel panics are problems specific to his computer. The majority of macs don't have that problems so he should quit whining to us and talk to Apple. As for the other things he complains about, those are really cosmetic changes that some people like and others don't.
The problems with Vista are more than just cosmetic. Unlike Vista, Leopard doesn't require 512 mb of ram to run all of it's features and still runner slow than the previous os. People aren't still running out and buying 10.4 instead of 10.5 in droves as they would buy xp over vista. Also compare the retail price (129-leopard, 200+ for all the different vistas).
Only a person with no understanding of philosophy or science can write a post such as yours. Since when does correlation often imply causation. There are almost an infinite number of things in which I can find a correlation, but that doesn't mean causation. And saying philosophy is useless is the mark of a man who has not spent any time engaging in it. Remember, it was philosophy that gave birth to science which you hold so highly.
Ok, I'm a complete noob when it comes to Linux and open sourse.
How can microsoft sue people who are using open source software? I thought the whole point is that the community works on it together or something to continually make it better and distribute for free among themselves.
Sometimes I wish slashdot allowed you to post pics on the comments section. Then I can directly post that graph that shows a correlation between a decrease in the pirate population and an increase in global warming.

Although a few might make some noise about it, most aren't going to care. Just look at the number of people posting their info on facebook.

If you can use Aperture as a replacement for Photoshop, then you really didn't need photoshop in the first place.

Why not Paul?

I thought this was the year of the Linux desktop.

With all the problems the 360 has been having over the years, I'm seriously thinking about getting a PS3 (I already have a Wii).

There isn't. I'm all for consumers having more choice and believe competition will benefit the consumer.
This isn't about record companies deciding DRM is bad. It is about making sure Apple doesn't control the distribution of digital media.

Although we will be fine for the near future, anything can happen. Don't believe America is an empire that can last forever.
