The interest paid on the mortgage you'd otherwise have is every bit as pissed away as the rent on the apartment.
No, it's not. At least not necessarily.
Especially with very low mortgage interest rates we have had for the last ~decade, you can in theory make more money by investing the money.
For example, using simple interest, if you have $1000 mortgage at 3.5%, in a year you pay $35 interest directly on that $1000. But you're not really paying the full $35, you're getting part of it back due to deductions, which lower your total taxes due. According to http://www.moneychimp.com/feat..., if you earned $100,000, you were in the 25% tax bracket.. and since that is deducted from your income to get AGI, you're effectively getting 25% of that $35 back. So you effectively only paid $26.25 in taxes.
If you can make more than 2.6% interest on that money (safe bond funds can do that, or some dividend paying stocks, depending on how much risk you want), then you are better off to borrow the money and invest it rather than effectively paying more.
-Blu-ray discs cost as much per TB as external drives, but are write-once, require a $100 drive and to split data across a whole stack of discs which is annoying
I can't argue about the price, but rewritable BluRay does exist. My very limited search on Amazon found $2.63 per 25 gig rewritable disc the lowest price.
(I was a huge fan of rewritable discs for my Toshiba xs32 hard drive/dvd recorder. Even though I do now just download shows from my tivo instead to make room, doing minimal editing directly on the recorder and then burning to disc on the XS32, or offloading to a disc for more storage or to keep, was convenient. I'd love something like that with much higher capacity and of course HD capability. BTW, there was a Tivo/DVD recorder, but it had NO editing whatsoever.)
(BTW, your political affiliation never even crossed my mind and why ruin a nice conversation about how milk is different in our parts of the world by bringing political affiliations into it.)
since most people (at least in the USA) think recycling (and electric cars, etc.) is an ultra-left wing thing.
What do other regions of the world use? How much longer does the milk last?
I just buy a gallon & freeze it in plastic bottles I already have, so it's not too big a deal. I use it mostly for coffee, so just leaving the frozen one out for a few minutes melts enough to use for coffee quickly, then just put in the fridge & it stays partially frozen for a while..
I rarely use the app or web site, I get the tweets delivered to me by text message.
Yes, it's "fluff", and the other subthread doesn't care about celebrities (which doesn't ONLY mean TV/movie people).. But I do think it's interesting to read bits of info (whether it's their opinion about something, factoids, or just links to other articles I may have missed) from people as varied as pro poker players to scientists (Neil Degrasse Tyson) to breaking news (CNN), etc..
I have text message noises/notifications turned off, so even though they're delivered to me, for me, it's in effect a 'pull' model where I go look at the accumulated texts when I want, but it's still easier IMHO than using the app.
The majority of the time, it's FASTER to pay, at least with Apple Pay, than with a regular credit card -- ESPECIALLY the chip cards where you have to leave them in the reader for an insane amount of time.
But e-Commerce stores like Amazon are increasingly turning to customer analytics to fine tune pricing on a per customer basis. They're looking at your shopping history
I don't know about the other factors, but grocery store club cards seem to be doing the same thing, and I'm fine with it. I get "personalized prices" that are LOWER than the sporadic specials (that rotate every couple of weeks), more often than the rotating specials, on things I actually buy. (Plus they try to add some more. I can't think of any of those examples that got me to buy a different product more than once.. The "once" times are sometimes when something is actually free.)
states are being decimated by the loss of sales tax revenue
You can't blame rightfully blame Amazon for that.
Their residents are legally required to pay use tax, at the equivalent rate as sales tax, for things bought out of state where sales tax was not collected.
This is not a "using every available legal way to avoid taxes" (which I absolutely endorse), this is literally cheating on their taxes.
You're saying "instead of" like it was some kind of malware or other nefarious product. Sponsored clearly means it's an advertisement. Just like free (to use) web pages have ads, free apps have ads, I don't see why another piece of free software couldn't have ads, and as others have pointed out, if you really wanted to remove them, you could.
(My favorite device to avoid ads is one that is hated by many open source advocates -- tivo. I rarely see TV ads, since I can skip them, even with features added in the past few years to make ads even easier to skip.)
I know for a fact that Johnny Carson had a woman (not that clown Gabor, but another with a white dress) on that asked him, "Do you want to pet my p@ssy?". The segment was broadcast on a tribute to the man like 20+ years ago, but it happened.
Until you can provide evidence, I'll believe a site that provides citations over your "know for a fact".
The reply saying Raquel Welch is debunked in the original article too, since the woman involved differs between many storytellers.
which is "super early" to me. (I *get up* at 9am most days, and that's partially due to the insane parking at work. Though that's only about a half hour earlier than I used to get up, to force me to be an early-ish person.)

The Wright Brothers only went 120 feet in 12 seconds. Jeez, what a couple of losers!
So you're saying you think there have been no battery improvements (or solar, etc.) in the last 20 years?

You're right.. I still think it's an unusual/interesting situation/story.
since most people (at least in the USA) think recycling (and electric cars, etc.) is an ultra-left wing thing.
TFA doesn't mention this, but http://www.businessinsider.com/bitcoin-price-war-amid-volatility and other newer articles I read say things like:
("This" being the size.) So that sounds to me like increasing the size could increase those threats. Yes or no?
Do you mean sealed as in never opened or just re-sealed?
If it doesnâ(TM)t last any longer in the fridge after opening, itâ(TM)s not that interesting to me.
Can you recycle the bags?
I can put the gallon plastic jugs in our weekly recycling (and hopefully they actually ARE being recycled).
15 days longer sounds like between 3 weeks and a month to stay fresh? I think the date on milk I buy can be more than a week out from today.
(BTW, you cannot accurately guess my political affiliation by the recycling question.)

I actually DON'T think it's the better option, but.....

We have (and mandate) things like seat belts and air bags.
Why not just address the "root causes": people driving badly?
Because BOTH are needed.
I rarely use the app or web site, I get the tweets delivered to me by text message.

$1.5 billion of stock isn't a "massive stock sale"?

Money CAN be bribery, but it also CAN be speech.
I think that ALL political contributions should be made public, and be trackable back to the source.
But if Joe Senator wants to take $1 million from Tobacco, Inc, you know where they are likely to vote.

You're "trusting" that your CPU is calculating the math to verify the cryptographic signature correctly.

The ACTUAL scene that was re-found relatively recently (last 10 years?) differs greatly from the way the story is told.
They said they have editorial control, which means they control the CONTENT of the site.
"Cannot modify the site" probably means the back end running of the site.
But, but, but... the summary says:
After starting work between 8 and 9 a.m.
