  3. Incorrect headline on Scientifically, You Are Likely In the Slowest Line · · Score: 3, Insightful

The video actually says that, mathematically, you are likely (2 out of 3 times) not to be in the fastest line.

In his example of three lines, there is still a 2/3 chance that you are not in the slowest line. So unless "one in three" has become "likely," the headline demonstrates a failure at basic maths.

Obviously you have your conclusion about it. All I'm suggesting is that to a homeopath it probably doesn't matter. The placebo effect is exactly what they are working with, they just have their own interpretation of what that is.

  5. Re:Homeopathic Medicine on Placebos Work -- Even Without Deception · · Score: 2

That is basically my point. It's not a physical science. It's based on a vitalist worldview that assumes its function cannot be measured by currently known means. Thus this study has little to no bearing on homeopaths.

  6. Re:Homeopathic Medicine on Placebos Work -- Even Without Deception · · Score: 2

I think you misunderstand the homeopathic point of view to believe that this weakens the legitimacy of their approach at all.

I'm not an expert in the field, but my understanding is that Homeopathy is based on the idea that there is a fundamental vital force that is responsible for overall well-being, which can be strengthened by taking particular concoctions that resonate with this force in the person. Maybe these placebos inadvertently had a homeopathic quality that was helpful for IBS sufferers.

Have you checked out Craigslist? Look at both the jobs and the "gigs" sections. I see ads for single-project development all the time as well as some ongoing stuff. I know a few people who do this sort of thing freelance full time and make a pretty penny too.

I live in one of the more tech-active areas in the country (Boulder, CO) so this may or may not apply...

An actually responsible thing to do might be for Microsoft to run a friendly educational campaign about malware and viruses... a lovely dream.

  11. Consider learning CMSs and taking small jobs on Freelance Web Developer Best Practices? · · Score: 1

I have spent the past couple years getting my foot into this world from scratch (no significant prior experience) and I have found CMSs like drupal, joomla, and wordpress to be invaluable for my work with small businesses, non-profits, artists, health practitioners, etc.

These jobs are fairly short and easy to do. They can be a way of building your confidence, professional manner, and estimating abilities without getting too deep in over your head. Of course you can also work with building sites from scratch and updating already built sites in order to develop those skillsets.

The point is to take on low-impact jobs working for people you actually like and hopefully share values with. This makes the professional relationship a lot easier and provides a lot of useful education for you in the process.

I do a lot of work for barter too. It's nice to be able to get services that are important to me like massage/bodywork or auto-repair as I am going through this learning process and expanding my professional horizons. I also get paid a fair chunk of change now and then for relatively minor jobs from a development perspective.

  12. Mind Training Practice on How to Deal With an Aging Brain? · · Score: 1

Mind training practice, by which I mean mindfulness-based meditation, is a really wonderful tool for this.

It helps engage the full brain, including that very non-geeky right hemisphere, in the learning and recall process. It trains the mind to apply the attention much more intelligently and effectively.

I find that this actually opens up more space in my head to geek out when necessary. The stuff I do not need to have filed away all perfectly can drift off into a more intuitive space where I can still access it when necessary. Meanwhile there is more room in my brain to efficiently file away all the nerdy details that I want.

See the Mind and Life Institute for research and information about this kind of thing.

    A Tale in the Desert:

    http://www.atitd.com/

is one good example of a game designed around cooperative and meaningful action. Players design whole villages and environments on their own based on an open world with a complicated ecosystem and meaningful quests.

The players can achieve high and unique status in a complex political and questing system - all generated by player action within a loose and changable framework. You work your way "up" both by slogging through menial tasks and interacting creatively and socially with other players.

The only "problem" is that the game is not action/conflict oriented. This sort of game is not of primary interest to the online gaming market that is more geared toward completely escaping reality into violent fantasy rather than semi-realistic cooperative fantasy.
