PS/2 connecters are very useful for keyboards since USB only supports 6-key rollover, where PS/2 supports n-key rollover. This is the case for my Das Keyboard and for the Steelseries 7G keyboards too.

  3. Re:Great. And Flash continues to be a plague on Adobe Releases Its Own HTML5 Video Player · · Score: 0

The biggest problem, I think, is that flash uses ActionScript. Not that the language is bad if you are a good programmer, but it lacks some features like generics. The few guys I know that code actionsript do it badly, a) because the schools in Denmark where you learn those things, do not teach very good programming practices, and b) because ActionScript makes it quite easy to write horrible code. This is not a rant on people who code ActionScript, I am just pointing out that due to the drag-and-drop nature of flash development (ie. the timeline), many inexperienced programmers can make quite cool looking stuff without worrying about the code. Exactly at that point is where the code gets ugly.

I am currently working og getting my bachelors in computer science in Denmark, and I found a job last year (on my second year) as a student programmer. Our starting pay is ~24USD (part time 15 hours a week, ~14.5 USD after taxes and so on). The 8 dollars seem a little in the low end, but then again it may be quite enough considering the taxes in the US.

You could use coloured petri-nets, a tool created by some phd student at daimi in aarhus (the Computer Science faculty of Aarhus University). Here is a link: http://wiki.daimi.au.dk/cpntools/cpntools.wiki I am not sure if it is useful, but surely a test worthy.

  8. Re:Think Different! on 2009, Year of the Linux Delusion · · Score: 0

2008 was the year of the linux desktop. I actually installed Ubuntu on my mothers computer, and every problem she's had with it I could fix just ssh'ing in. I am not concerned of viruses and malware will hijack her computer, so I am happy camper. With some googling ubuntu can be customized to suit most people's needs, and it can be done even by non-techies. I would argue that keeping a windows machine clean, stable and responsive requires much more technical finesse than doing the same on linux, so why don't we all install it on our mothers pc's?

I'm not that old, but I remember when I had my first x86 pc with a whopping 133 mhz and 16mb of ram (which was virtually the top of the line back then).

The problem is with these kids get all that processing power and do not know what to do with it.

My 450mhz machine, which was essentially what replaced my commodore 64 was total overkill for my needs back then.

Hell I could do most of the programming in emacs, vi or even nano, but since I am blessed with a 2.3GHz dualcore machine at work and a ~3GHz machine at home, I tend to use an actual IDE, but I could be at least as productive without.

Today I've seen kids at age of 10 having a laptop at 1.5GHz or something, which doesn't teach them real computing, back then where freeing one extra MB of ram was essential for winamp not lagging.

If I had that computing power back then, I would be the happiest kid in the world.

  11. Ipod Linux on Antitrust Suit Filed To Halt Apple 'Music Monopoly' · · Score: 1

One can, if that's what one desires, install ipodlinux on the iPod, and then play other formats.

This lawsuit is rather ridiculous because, as been said before, one could choose to buy / rip to DRM-free mp3's, and if the ipod didn't support MP3 then one could consider a monopoly lawsuit.
