I don't know, I could see Ahmadinejad going off about God speaking to him and telling him it was His Will to cleanse the holy sites of infidels in nuclear fire. It would be even worse if he actually truly believes in his religion, and truly believes he would be doing god's work. Then no cost would be too great. I don't really think this is true, Ahmadinejad seems like too much of a politician. I guess my point is, the more leaders of nuclear nations believe in fantasies, the more unpredictable and dangerous they are.

Science is far too diverse to categorize all scientists as one thing or another. The scientific process is our best (and really only tool) for determining what is physically true. Yes, scientists can abuse the process, or choose to disregard some evidence, but this kind of science won't stand up to peer review.

Good public policy should involve decisions based on fact, and that means a system where politicians, who make our decisions, are well informed by the scientific community, and the public understands through the media not only the facts but the reasons behind implementing them as policy. Of course this isn't really what we have today.

It seems to me that the first real step to moving to electronic books would be coming up with a cross-platform framework that is easy, intuitive and powerful for interacting with a text book. Once you have that, then it should be made to work well with whatever platform you're running. It seems really stupid to simply design something to work with an iPad, when nearly everyone already has a laptop of some kind. And other than the touch screen, what benefit does an iPad have anyway? A well designed system could accept mouse gestures to work as well as finger gestures, without getting your monitor all greasy in the process.

I think the idea behind it is that tax is a way to encourage certain behavior and discourage other, and they want people to pair and reproduce future working americans. I'm not sure of the practicalities behind this however, and I think no matter what the tax situation people that want to have kids will have them, so I agree that this shouldn't be the law.

  12. Re:Troubling on ISP Owner Who Fought FBI Spying Freed From Gag Order · · Score: 1

My view is that marriage is a religious entity, and the church alone should be able to decide who it wants to marry. However, the state (being separate from any religion), should be able to give the same legal rights that they now give for marriage to almost any two people who want to be married. Call it a legal union, or whatever else you want, but the rights should be there and be independent of any church.

The state shouldn't recognize polygamy and incestuous relations. Excessive polygamy shouldn't be condoned because then there won't be enough of a particular sex to go around, and incest shouldn't be allowed because it leads to biological problems. Basically, for logical and scientific reasons.

You may then wonder why allow gays to marry, since it could also lead to population imbalances (if for example more men are gay than women). The reason for this is because they can't help being gay (believing otherwise is idiotic), and no matter what the law is they are going to pair off this way anyway. Polygamists may marry under their church anyway despite the law, but this is different in my mind, because nobody has a condition where they are attracted to ONLY multiple other people.

You may then further wonder if I would support unions that don't lead to population imbalances and genetic problems, for example four bisexuals (two male two female) in a union... well I personally wouldn't have a problem with it, but we'd want to make sure they wouldn't have an unfair advantage over others under the law, I would think.

In summary, provide legal opportunities for couples that make sense, and let churches perform whatever ceremonies they want to please their respective gods.

I'm not sure about that- you're bound to the rules of the road a lot more strictly on a motorcycle. You can't just blast by cars on the right without people getting pissed, or go through a red light when it's clearly safe to do so without worrying about getting in trouble, or going when the pedestrian crossing signs light up. A scooter on the other hand, that might just do the trick.

Of course, this is coming from my experience in southern NH where it's not uncommon to spot bicycle cops riding the wrong way down the road on the sidewalk...
