  1. Re:Which media company would refuse to stir up shi on Of 8 Tech Companies, Only Twitter Says It Would Refuse To Help Build Muslim Registry For Trump (theintercept.com) · · Score: 1

based on hypotheticals? Sure, it's an appalling idea, but can we wait until it's an actual plan before pouring out the vitriol?

Huh? NO! If there is anything really bothersome about the Pepe's taking over, it is this order to sit back and watch them at work . So after we get the Muslim registry, what will you demand next? We just just give it a try it a try and see how it works?

It's obvious to anyone with a brain cell that Il Pepe and followers are built on hate and anger. While useful in small amounts, when it is the core principle, it always kills itself.

Make no mistake, I believe that religion is responsible for most of mankind's ills, and that radical Islam is a poster child for evil, and I have no problem at all with terminating them with extreme prejudice. I prefer to administer criminal justice to actual criminals however. But when a group of people is branded as terrorists without evidence, well google Nazi Jewish ID cards. Perhaps this will be part of the model? I have no desire to implement such a program, and don't need to wait to condemn it. http://www.tennesseeholocaustc...

  2. I think I speak for anyone who's read a history book when I say this is an absolutely awful idea. I know Twitter gets a lot of stick but well done them. If you're in favour of this then you're a fascist or you're an idiot. There's literally no middle ground. This is how it starts.

Well, maybe Muslims should be required to sew a crescent on all of their clothing, so we can identify them in public. That method of ID has been tested and used already.

    Oh...... wait.....

  3. Oh, if it's an internet poll I'd be campaigning hard to get the next element named "Hydrogen". If you're gonna troll, troll as hard as you can.

    Lowdrogen?

  4. I feel much the same way as you. In theory, I'm pro-nuclear power. But when dealing with real world engineering issues, not to mention the incredibly decline in cognitive abilities in product engineering these days, not so much.

The problem is as you suggest. Altogether too many people seem to place a political mindset to the issue. Somehow, if you say something negative about nuclear, they bring out the long sharp knives and somehow know for a fact that you are a left wing tree hugger of some other pejorative.

Rule number one is that ideology has not once negated a scientific truth. The same with economics or the free market, or regulations or any other ephemeral human construct. Americans were not able to come up with a religious explanation that invalidated evolution, even when they use the law to ensure that it isn't taught, nor have they been able to cause the sex drive of teenagers to disappear. The old Soviet Union was not able to use it's ideology approved version of genetics - Lysenkoism - to actually ever work, even if old Joe thought it was the shitz. Many more examples, but I'm writing about physics, not politics.

Even in here, we have at least one person who won't even take the word of the people who investigated Fukushima and found incredibly indictful problems. His faith is 100 percent unshakable, I suspect he would gobble down a pound of Corium to prove how safe it is. I do not argue much with deluded people as soon as they prove what they are.

But although it is certainly possible to design a safe reactor, all of those artificial human constructs, along with a possibly inexhaustible supply of hubris, make it very difficult. Because physics gives not a teeny little tiny fuck what my opinion is, or anyone else's opinion is. It is what it is. I can't believe I used that phrase, but this might be the only time it was 100 precent appropriate)

  5. What's insane about that? Fructose is a poison.

The insane part is its like arguing that arsenic is better for you than lead.

I just love it when someone brags about only drinking Mexican Coca Cola like they are all concerned about healthy eating.

  6. The summary has the names (or it does now, anyway) but not the numbers or the symbols, which would have been nice to include. Would've been good to include some etymology as well.

Yeah - not certain if that was dumassium poisoning making me stupid or what. My most credible defense is that I was something like the third person to post on the story, and it might have been fixed. Or caffeine deprivation. Or a dumass moment.

  7. Wait, what? The names are in the first sentence of the summary. The numbers are not in the summary, though; thanks, Ol' Soc!

Wat? I'm not certain if the summary was updated, or maybe I should have had a second cup of coffee before posting! they are definitely there now!

  8. Pity they gave up so soon, I'm convinced Ytterby had still more names in it,

A record that will never be broken.

The new names don't have much pizzazz though, do they?

    Harambeium?

We need an internet poll so we can name at least one of them Elementy McElementfaceium.

  9. I did say it was a great artificial sweetener. I use it a lot. It just doesn't taste the same as sugar.

There's a reason there are several different types of artificial sweetener's out there. Splenda doesn't taste like much of anything to me. Other people like it. I like Equal myself. Some other people can't even tolerate that.

Strangest thing is that the sweetener I don't like at all is table sugar.

A side note is that we have entered a terminal age of sweetener war insanity now that some companies are touting that they use the healthy sucrose instead of that killer fructose. And people go for it! Financial interests tapping into people's believe that if they only do special things, they will live forever.

  10. I thought calories didn't matter, only carbs matter. Or was there another study this week. The answer changes all the time.

Depends on the business who's ox is being gored, or the person who's ideology is being promoted or dismissed.

Once upon a time, salted lard was the standard spread for bread and toast. Then it was attacked by both dairy and vegetable oil interests, to the point where just saying "lard" will cause an involuntary grimace for some folks.Turns out its no worse than butter, and definitely better than hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Eggs were hit hard as well. Vegans want us to adopt a prey animal artificial diet.

I've determined that the best bet is acknowledging that we are omnivores, and we should eat what we like as long as we get a good mix of everything, and not too much of anything. With too much defined as approaching exclusivity.

You can pretty much see the painting on the wall. Politics has all but ruined Slashdot. I've been here around 16 years, and I've never been more driven to quit entirely. The site and the community over the last year has degenerated from critical/debating to dogmatic/adhominem.

Slashdot is at a point where netnews was 10 or so years ago. There were some groups that I frequented for electronics and amateur radio. But the kooks were taking over. Some folks from West Virginia who were suffering from severe psycho-sexual issues were carrying on the equivalent of a bar room brawl. Then there was the guy who was opening a shitload of mail accounts in order to get around our blocking him. And none of these posts had a thing to do with the topic. Eventually, after finding perhaps one post out of several hundred that was worth reading, and looking at my blocklist, I came to the conclusion that there was no point in being there. Meanwhile every other legitimate poster was also vacating the premises, leaving the place to the rabble who destroyed it.

Interestingly, after wrecking the place, the nuts left as well. Seems part of the fun was pissing off the rest of us. Leaving behind a graveyard to today.

This is where Slashdot finds itself today. A place where in order to get any on-topic or intelligent conversation, I have to read with the filters set pretty high. Which as it turns out, hides most of the posts in any story.

Slashdot is on the cusp of going the way of netnews.

Net neutrality is a frequent topic of discussion on Slashdot. Anything that the President-elect does that could affect it is news for nerds and stuff that matters.

What is interesting is that the anger in some folks was stoked to such a level that they now oppose net neutrality, based on the next occupant's appointments. I have to imagine that once upon a time, opposition to net neutrality would have approached 100 percent in here.

No, Trump supporters don't give a crap about the fact that their messiah is a Bullshitter in Chief. Maybe they are just stupid. Really, really stupid people.

What they are is angry people. He has managed to tap into anger that has been cultivated over the past 20 some years.

And anger is seldom concerned with facts. It only knows it is angry.

It also tends to stay angry, and is very difficult to control, usually requiring a ramping up of that anger, because the angry will turn on others in an instant.

Hell, after winning possibly the biggest upset in history, when what would otherwise be a time of celebration, its pretty evident that the anger of his supporters hasn't subsided a bit. The people who have lost are angry, yet orders of magnitude less angry than the winners.

Its interesting, in a previous article about Il Don being banned from Twitter, Pepe' is all frothing at the mouth about banning his free speech. Yet we come with a story about their guy appointing an opponent of net neutrality, and we get Pepe' in shitfit rage about "sensational leftist tabloid" bullshit.

It is a bit worrisome when a subject such as net neutrality, which at one time would have been important because net neutrality is or should be important to "nerds", is subject to this level of attack. Is this a website for nerds, or just migrating to Yahoo and YouTube comments status. Or will be become Facebook for nerds.

I find myself increasingly visiting technical only sites, I fear Slashdot is starting to suffer brain drain.
