  1. Re:Irony and Science on EPA Quashed Report Skeptical of Global Warming · · Score: 1

While the author does cite a number of actual scientific reports, the text quoted here and the failure to consider the entire constellation of improvements wrought by technology over the last century render his entire report ridiculous.

Even ignoring improvements in medical technology, mean lifespan is probably the most useless single statistic I can think of. The fact of infant mortality is enough to throw that entire argument in the garbage. *facepalm*

Um, keeping data private across a wire is a solved problem: public key encryption. And if, further, you don't want someone to see where your packets are going you can use TOR.

People need to be educated about how the internet works, but there is no reason you can't communicate privately if you want to.

That gun is nothing. Take a look at this clip of Raytheon's latest toy. It's a pain-ray that when used properly will leave no permanent damage or marks of any kind:

I wish I could find the entire 60 Minutes segment on this technology. What is incredibly disturbing is the angle 60 Minutes chooses to take; they do not address EVEN BRIEFLY the controversial implications of the existence of a weapon like this: the potential for physical harm (trampling in crowds), the possibility of it's use as a "perfect" torture device, philosophical questions about authority, etc.

Instead they immediately side with the proponents of this technology and frame the Pain Ray as the victim of a lot of governmental bureaucracy: "the soldiers/police are dying every day while this tool sits behind a lot of red tape".
