  1. Re:Test using Kubuntu? on Usability Testing Hardy Heron With a Girlfriend · · Score: 1

I'd like to see the same test with Kubuntu. Not saying that it's better but I'd like to see the results with KDE as well. I switched my girlfriend over to Kubuntu after I set the system up (installed flash, codecs etc). There were a few hiccups (she tried to install windows media player at one stage) but other than that she searches on the internet for solutions herself, and when she finds something she can't handle (which is rare) she gives me a call. All in all, she just gets on with it, and says she prefers it to Windows.
I did want her to write an article outlining her experience, but she never got around to it :P

And how well do you think your girlfriend would go on a vanilla windows install with no flash installed, MSN account not setup, etc? If the article's author had setup flash / pidgin / explained the difference between GIMP & Open Office draw, his girlfriend would have had few problems. I'd suggest to you (honestly) - that if all your gf really does is youtube, mail & chat, then she'd be much better off on Ubuntu than windows. Exactly! My girlfriend runs Kubuntu, and she does just fine. Thing is, I set up the computer beforehand so that it was just like an OEM windows install. All codecs etc were installed beforehand. Just like they are in windows. I'd love to see someone sit their girlfriend in front of a fresh XP install; "Now, go find drivers for network card, graphics card, divx codecs etc" Yeah right.

Yes. Because upgrading the entire frickin' desktop environment is exactly the same as shipping a late beta of Firefox. Perhaps you're right, but technically KDE 4 is *out* of beta. So it's comparing a late beta inclusion to a release version inclusion.

AFAIK, since this is a LTS (Long Term Support) release, they went with the beta Firefox so there wouldn't be major shocks when Mozilla stopped updating 2.x and Ubuntu updated everyone to 3. In that case, they should have shipped with KDE 4.0.3 and made Kubuntu LTS too

I'm guessing you don't live in a country like South Africa? You park a locked or unlocked car on the side of the road in some suburbs and you'll wake up to no car. You don't install electric fences, burglar alarms, and burglar bars then you are more likely to be robbed since your house is the easier target. People can get at your stuff if they're sufficiently motivated, obviously, but given the choice between going for the unlocked house and the locked house, which one do you think they'll choose?

Well, Dolphin is nice for first-timers. My girlfriend uses it, and can't really tell the difference between Konqueror and Dolphin. She doesn't use the extra features of Konqueror. Myself? Maybe I'm stuck in my ways but I had to change back to Konqueror. Split pane is not a replacement for tabs, for me at least.

  14. Re:But does it run Windows? on KDE 4 to Be Released on January 11th · · Score: 4, Insightful

Yes, with Qt4 we should see KDE apps on all, Mac, Windows, and obviously, Linux. It will be nice to see some of the apps I use on a day to day basis (like Kile) ported to Windows. If someone starts using KDE apps, it'll ease the transition should they ever choose to switch to Linux.
