No monopolies at all. Please enlighten me as to why I don't have options. Or better yet, thanks to the free market known as the internet- I'd love to start my own ISP. Let's get started right away.
How much money from taxes? Are you kidding? We gave huge tax incentives to ISP over the past 20 years with direct requirements for a fiber network that never happened. Now ISPs are claiming they shouldn't have to foot the bill.
Does it? A provider should be able to deliver their content where and when they choose. As a customer, you have a choice. Do you buy media from people who pull these bullshit strongarm tactics or not? If you think what they are doing is wrong, then you have a choice; give up consuming their media, or admit that you have no conviction.
Actually, I don't have a choice. Thanks to America's tax dollars going to work to create an infrastructure with legislated monopolies, I have exactly two options for internet: Cable or DSL. Two companies. Both bad. Comcast or Verizon. You choose.
So, yes, it should be legislated. It's a network for the people, paid for by the people, and the companies running the show were given exclusive deals to keep it running. That exclusivity should come with a responsibility to stay neutral.
In a free market, I'd agree with you. But that's simply not the case here.
I agree- there should be antitrust regulation against this, as the consumer has no choice. Content producers should be unable to make deals with the tax-money-created monopolies that exist. This is why people are pushing for net neutrality.
I'm happy to subscribe to services that I see fit. Not choose a service based on what bundles I can get.
The upside to this, is of course, that smaller content producers can use this as an advantage- being accessible from ALL ISPs means more exposure. Maybe this will finally kill the giants!
I just tested to see if my internet provider gives me access. This is the message I got:
How To Get ESPN360.com
Close
ESPN360.com is available at no charge to fans who receive their high-speed internet connection from an ESPN360.com affiliated internet service provider. ESPN360.com is also available to fans that access the internet from U.S. college campuses and U.S. military bases.
Congratulations! Your internet service provider carries ESPN360.com. Just click on the WATCH NOW link or any event to start watching ESPN360.com.
(Emphasis: Mine) This is one of the most chilling messages I've ever gotten on the internet. I hope never to read a message like that again. Your provider carries "google"??
Obivously,it's leading to this: The real money maker:
We're sorry, your provider does not carry the XXX porn package, you cannot access any of these sites.
Freakin idiots. ESPN, a content producer, is using their weight to ruin the internet.
This is so bass ackwards to the way the internet works and will continue to work. My only hope is that this idea fails with gusto, so that it can be used as a warning shot to all others who think they can "OWN" the internet like they owned the captive audiences on cable TV.
TV is a dead business model, and they need to get on the bandwagon. Ever since I got Hulu on my Xbox, I've discovered how much I just don't care, and don't need, cable/satelite tv.
Net neutrality needs to specifically outlaw this sort of thing.
Locking down information on the net is exactly how to ruin the net.
All that being said, we'll just use a proxy and move on.
Here's one that gets thrown around alot on/. - Correlation does not imply causation.
The legislated morality may have very little to do with the crime rate. I mean, it's not a coincidence that Utah's overall violent crime rate is low- AND there's a ton of salt in their lake!
I agree with this one. If you're so insensitive to your customer/reader base that you don't mind putting offensive ads into your content (Time.com I'm looking at you), then you don't get my business at all.
Why companies think they can do whatever they want with no consequences.. I have no idea.
I know you're trolling, but just to help remove the FUD, opera works fine with gmail, doesn't crash, and was one of the first browsers to pass the acid test.
You know your feature is boring when people watch it to see the funny ads, and in order to keep ratings up they flash tits at every turn.. Janet Jackson Started a trend..
I am an unfortunate NH Fairpoint subscriber. I'm on 3mbps/768kbps. I have trouble watching hulu while somebody else is browsing the web.
With the amount I depend on my net connection, I really need an upgrade.
Fairpoint offered me 7.1 d/l service on a flyer, I was so excited, I called them immediately, fully prepared to pay through the nose. They responded- oh we don't service that area. I asked why they sent me a flyer to my address then. They responded that it was a mistake. I hated Verizon, but I REALLY hate fairpoint.
NH and Vermont are forever doomed to the stoneage. But Maine has GWI, which looks to be a great deal and good speeds. I HATE FAIRPOINT.
I agree with this. Everybody thinks that you should just upgrade your RAM, and get it over with. Why wouldn't you, with the price of ram as low as it is?
My problem with it is this: If I can run windows xp on 512mb, then I'd want the money I spend on an extra 2gb to go towards my games and programs.
But if my OS requires at least 2gb just to run smoothly, why on earth would I upgrade from XP? I like giving memory to my programs, not the OS.
The first thing he'll do is Root the country- for our own protection. We won't be able to do anything once he's in. He'll screw everything up, and won't leave when we ask him to. We'll need to find a special force of people to go in and remove him manually.
Worst of all, he won't even fix any problems while he's there, and we'll end up calling his competitors to fix the problem later.
I smell a new law coming! Camera Phones with video capabilities can only be used on bikes with baseball cards in the spokes! This will protect everybody!
I live in forgotton NH. Along with Vermont (and maine, but they have GWI), Verizon sold us to Fairpoint, whose main goal is to do nothing at all. There's no active plan to build out the fiber network. Some places in southern NH have fiber left over from verizon, but that's about it.
We're left almost completely in the dark, and my only option is 3 mbps down/768 kbps up connection at $60/month. What's sad is that I'd pay a lot more for a faster connection.
I'm personally ashamed that I ever forked over money for GTA 1 and 2, which gave them the budget to launch GTA 3, which made them the success that they are now. They shouldn't forget where they came from- the PC gaming community.
Am I the only one who thinks we should attempt to land on it and stage an emergency scenerio drill, just to prepare for the day when there is an armageddon-destined asteriod?
I'm sorry, it's 360. It's called playon by mediamall.

googleeverywhere.com doesn't work for me, I didn't upgrade to the "Russian Extras" package at my ISP. I only have basic internet.

I use opera and I haven't gotten a popup in years. No need for "no script." Just plainly no popups.
Hey! What are you talking about? I'm a deer covered in peices of paper, you insensitive clod! I think they're mighty dangerous.

You could just buy a small digital camera and save yourself the hassle...

Don't get me wrong, I love aero glass. I was an early adopter in the beta phase, and loved every moment.
The time I stopped loving it was when beta went to RTM, and RTM went to SP1, and I still felt like it was in beta.
