    Since this is just experimentation he will be fine with 8gb. The networking part of RAC on VM is relatively painless. Sharing the disks between VMs is the only tricky part.

    I'm in a similar income range to the parent and do a few of those things. I've bought some nice nearly new Armani sport coats and great shoes on eBay for next to nothing, and they are barely used. I got a brand new tux last month for $50.

    Why spend it if you don't have to?

    Canadian customs officers are known for playing 20 questions and generally being bullies. The US customs officials are no angels either, but Canada seems to be rough.

    My favorite is France, where you show them your passport, and they let you in. No bullshit.

    If you have Blackberry Enterprise Server (and access to it or the admin) you could configure Nagios pages in a special (tier 1) category, and change the behavior on those (keep ringing and vibrating)

    Isn't there some sort of telecom monopoly in Mexico with Telmex--I remember reading about it a couple of years ago, and Mexico seems to have much higher telecom rates than the rest of Latin America.

    That's the beauty of using an Open Source solution for this, and not some proprietary Diebold MS Access crap. Yes, it is a limited subset of people who can review and understand the code, but there are enough of them
    that there is transparency. Versus some machine who's code won't be seen by anyone.

    DBA here. Not Indian. Was formerly on a team of 12 DBAs who weren't Indian. We did have some outsourced support, but they weren't as solid as our team.

    My point there are lots of non-Indian, really good DBAs, you just haven't met them.

    And btw, DBAs at least good ones, do alright on the salary scale.

    I'm suprised Oracle is letting this fly--it probably somehow violates the EULA, by reverse engineering Oracle redo logs. Basically, it seems like they are targetting smaller shops, who don't want to buy Oracle Enterprise Edition (and hire a f/t DBA). My only question would be, how big is the market that needs to do replication, but can't spend the $ or â on Oracle Enterprise (which can be cheaper than you think for a small shop)

    Block based snapshots in conjuntion with database backup packages are the only way to do this. For instance with a Net App filer, you can take a block level image, and tie it in to Oracle's RMAN (Recovery Mananger). It's the only way to deal with DBs that large. BTW, I think the size limit in Oracle 10 is on the order of 10 exabytes, and Oracle 11 has no size limit.

    22 observers at San Juan strikes me as light, given the number of plants on the island. However, the every two years thing isn't that bad. When the FDA comes in for in audit, they aren't just sampling product and doing QA testing on it. They are insuring that you as a pharmaceutical company have processes and procedures in place to ensure the quality and efficacy of your product. Basically, they are auditing your process more than your product. Even down to an IT level, extensive change control is necessary to be in compliance with FDA cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices)
