has anyone here actually tried reading for prolonged periods of time on a kindle? It is vastly superior to any other display for that purpose. Sure the refresh rate is slow, but the whole time you're reading ITS NOT REFRESHING. It literally feels just like a book to your eyes.
I can't speak for anyone else, but reading for prolonged periods of time on a standard display tires my eyes out.
Apple might corner the market for cute toys that people believe to be handed down by god, but for serious readers e-ink is the only choice (besides dead trees)
I suspect a ways down the road there will be a convergence of e-ink and lcd/oled technology that selectively refreshes changed portions of the screen, with e-inks static image technology.
BIOS passwords are in no way secure. Resetting bios passwords is as easy as taking the backup battery off the motherboard, and unplugging it long enough to reset to its factory state. To prevent this you have to lock the hardware up from physical access.
Completely invalid reasoning on so many levels. Curtailing supply NEVER diminshes demand.
Diminished supply does 2 things: it raises the cost of the item/service in question and it pushes buyers to other outlets to fuffill the demand.
Look at the meteoric rise in the sale and use of prescription drugs. The war on cocaine, which used to be a prominent upper class drug has now been largely supplanted by the use of prescription Ritalin, which is chemically very similar. Constricting the supply of cocaine did no reduce demand or the use of drugs but pushed people onto a cheaper and easier to get product.
I haven't used a palm in a while but all my notes in college were taken on a palm tungsten M with an infrared folding keyboard. I calibrated the touch screen on the device 1 time and never had calibration problems.
Maybe the difference is using quality parts vs cheapest since voting machines sole market is to government, who always go for the lowest bidder even though it always bites them in the ass.
Unfortunately this is not a story that main stream media will carry. As long as there are issues that average joe cares more about like the economy or the how our troops are being utilized, the continued trampling of our Constitution will not get complained about. Politicians are smart enough to know the only thing people care about "it's the economy stupid".
For the news to cover it would be to hurt their ratings with the general public and in the end only public news will cover things that would hurt their advertisers.
The weird thing about it is it's not just the US that is falling into this black whole of constant surveillance. Other western nations (see England and cctv system or Australia and the recent attempt at internet filtering) both are sliding in that direction as well. It seems like another case of our technology racing ahead of our morality (or common sense).
I love that you think blocking adds on biggest and most successful attempt to bring content directly and legally to the internet is something people should be proud of. Don't be retarded, ad revenue is the only way Hulu will stay alive.
yea seriously, anyone who has studied the criminal justice system for more then 5 minutes knows how huge a role police discretion plays in the enforcement of laws. It is one of the huge variables in the system that people not familiar with the topic tend to ignore.
I would love to see some evidence of this ridiculous assertion. Moore's law does not apply to every field in life and there is a huge difference between doubling the number of transistors and creating a new treatment, then going through rigorous test to ensure the new treatment doesn't kill people.
Yes you are right, we already are footing the bill when poor people wait till the they are sick enough that it is against the law for the ER to deny them care.
It has been empirically proven that preventative treatment is phenomenally cheaper then curative treatment. Having a system where the poor could get health care before their health degrades into a medical nightmare will save us money in the long run. Sometimes doing the right thing is also the fiscally responsible choice.
If I had found out that some school official strip searched my kid, regardless of age or sex; the officials involved would never have made it to trial.
For those that didn't RTFA:
After she had stripped to her underwear, "they asked me to pull out my bra and move it from side to side," she said. "They made me open my legs and pull out my underwear."
School is supposed to be a place where kids are safe. When the solution is worse then the crime you have a system out of control.
how is it Apple is able to include a pdf reader in os x without getting in trouble? Is that simply because they are not nearly the large target that microsoft is?
That is interesting as I recently purchase my first mac when the new macbook pros came out as well.
I've owned good, ie not cheap, laptops before (thinkpads, dell xps, and an assortment of other less expensive machines). None of them come close to touching the new macbook pro.
It is vastly more stable, goes into and out of sleep mode faster and more reliably then any other laptop I have owned, and in general feels more responsive then any windows machine I have used (including the brand new quad core dell xps I was given at work)
I am not saying its perfect, I have had it completely lock up on me twice and had to force quit a few applications, but having 3rd party applications lock up is unavoidable. In the case where an application does lock up, force quit always worked immediately.
As for your bitching about the laptop not having vga connectors, it is a standard apple practice not to include outdated ports/tech.
Maybe you should have completely researched the machine before dropping that much money on it rather then blame someone else for your own mistake?
While you are right that that a humid environment means there is probably water, but that does not mean there is drinkable water. There is a crapload of water in the developing world that simply is not healthy to drink. It is why diarrhea is one of the biggest killers in many developing nations.
So while living in europe did you keep your head in the sand? Europe is leading the charge on public cctv systems. Also, maybe you should read the news a little more. (link you should have read before opening your mouth below) \/ EU Wants Air Passenger Data Collected
Do I dispute what? That you cant disprove something for which there is not evidence in the first place? Um well then I guess not. However stating that it is beyond the ability of science when someone says there is no god is only in as that science can never disprove something for which its adherents do not base their argument for on logic and fact. Once someone departs from logic and fact, it is impossible to shake their support for an idea. So yes science will never be able to shake the belief of religious zealots, but then again, nor will science ever be able to convince my 4 year old cousin that the Barney is a man in a suit.
disproved by scientific means, I remind those who are making statements to the effect that there is no God, realize that they themselves are making a faith statement since they can not prove that God does not exist. To say "there is no God" is to express an opinion for which there can be no evidence given.
Luckily for those of us in the world who apply a thing I affectionately like to call logic, stating that God does not exist is not a faith statement as all the evidence in fact points to the fact that God in fact does not exist. What evidence you might ask? The lack of evidence for the existence of God. You cannot prove something by saying it cannot be disproven. In fact the very argument you are attempting to make is a long time recognized logical fallacy known as Argument from Ignorance" (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_ignorantiam). The standard of proof always lies on the person making the claim (ie, God exists). By the way whoever modded this idiot insightful needs to be slapped in the face a few times, it is this type of ridiculous reasoning that is killing the US.
Marriage and kids are completely besides the point when talking about employers giving flexibility and choice to their employers. After all, with that flexibility you could very well choose to come in at 9 - 5 if that suits your wife and kids, but why force that on others because it suits you? I know guys with a wife and kids that come in later because they actually find it useful to getting their kids off in the morning. Someone a couple of posts up made the point of increased productivity on a flexible workday system. You can't deny that people are more productive when they can choose to work at the hours their mind is the most alert. In that respect it is in the employers best interest to allow flexible hours since in the end they will end up getting more value from their employees.
I have been a slashdot reader for ages but never got around to creating account but after reading cayenn8's response I just had to get my 2 cents in.
Life is way to short (and you only have 1) to slave yourself to a job with no say as to how to run your life. Considering you spend a very significant portion of your life at work I would say it is crucial to find a job that fits your life and not fit your life to your job. There are many tech jobs out there that allow you to choose your hours, provided you work hard, get your work done, and actually work a full 40 hour week. Every place I have ever worked has allowed this. In fact, it is one of the things that I demand from an employer before I agree to work anywhere. I have friends at other companies that routinely come in at 4pm. Me I like the evenings so I come in about 11 pm but I could come in much later if I wanted. It is this old school, lemming type mindset such as yours that allows upper management at some companies to still perpetrate the ridiculous 9 - 5 workday. If you are much better then average at what you do you will find employers will give you flexibility. So lemmings of the 9 - 5, grow some balls.
Perl prevails?

Just get the command line flex compiler from adobe, which is completely free and get FlashDevelop 3, which is also free. In other words, Google it.

All I can think of when I read this article is this most excellent xkcd strip http://xkcd.com/137/
maybe not but google does let you download your email via imap, thereby exporting all of your data stored in gmail.
