IMHO C++ is a dialect of C and the two should be lumped together. One of the problems I've had with Java (which I've been using for the past 12 years) is that it is difficult to extend. It's not impossible, but I found the inability to pass arguments by reference made it difficult to make useful functions. BigDecimal is useful but extremely painful to use. Dates weren't done well at all.
At the beginning of the project, I had to write parts of it in C/C++ and GTK2 which I found quite nice and responsive.
I know two people with Windows Phone 7 and both wouldn't buy it again. One has already moved to Android (Samsung Galaxy II) and the other will probably get an IPhone when his contract is up. YMMV.
As far as.NET is concerned, that's great, if you want it to run only under Windows and I suppose the same is true for Objective-C and IOS. I'm developing a large (1.5 million lines of code) Java project which has to run on Windows and Linux so.NET is not an answer.
and development managers are disproportionately female to a vast degree.
Yes, the fact is is that there is a real bias against men when it comes to hiring for higher level positions. I worked for a telecom company where 10% of the resumes where from women, 25% of the hires were women and 50% of all management positions were women. I also worked at a computer company where the rations appeared to be about the same.
Yes, I remember a price tag of $500, and even if you bought Windows outright, it was significantly less.
I read the article and there were so many reasons why OS/2 failed but they never mentioned the price, which, IMHO, was the biggest reason it failed. If they had priced it competitively, or even offered some really low price for owners of Windows, they might have gained market share.
How 'bout having two facebook accounts. One which you use with your friends and one which you post a few family pictures and one or two of you at the local rotary club. Then you get your friends to do the same. Send a few messages back and forth showing the new baby and congratulations on your wife's success at the non-profit for disabled kids.
On my laptop, which I dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu is clearly more responsive. When I've worked with Windows and then switch to Ubuntu I feel like I have a new machine. When I switch back to Windows, I always feel like something's wrong because it becomes so sluggish.
Viber, WhatsApp are two glaring examples of missing apps for WP7. And many of the apps which are available cost money but the very same apps are available for free with Android.
I live in Europe and we did have a pretty good cold spell, but it was not a record. If you go back 60 years, this happened frequently. At the turn of the century and well into th 20th century, it was common to be able to skate everywhere on the channels in Holland.
The general trend is undeniably warming and at a pace which is undeniably much quicker than it has ever happened before. Nature can adjust and will adjust over time, but at this pace, our support system won't last. In 1000 years there will still be life on this planet, I'm sure, but I doubt it will be human.
Since you were there, is there any truth to the rumor of the difficulties they had converting Hotmail to Windows Server and that they had to switch back to FreeBSD or Solaris or whatever it was running on when they bought it?
Because it shows they're speaking purely out of spiteful bias
Actually, I think most people are speaking from bad experiences. But, as a whole, we have Linux internally (now about 50 clients and two servers) and a few Windows clients. We have a guy full time spending a good part of his time supporting the Windows boxes. The linux boxes give us no trouble. If you hear people complaining about Windows at our company it's because they are genuinely frustrated.
They switched back to Sun hardware and Solaris for hotmail
Rumor has it that Hotmail was running on FreeBSD when MS bought it. But, regardless, I heard the same story that they tried to get it work on Windows Server and failed miserably. I guess this is why they still use Akamai linux servers for Windows Update.
The law is clear that the service can't be held reliable for the actions of those using it. Google has given the MPAA and others every possible tool to find copyrighted material and to have it removed. They've completed their end of the deal and gone above and beyond.
It is the MPAA who is being sneaky here. They are trying to create precedent by attacking a smaller service which can't defend themselves to the extent that Google can. And then, with precedence in hand, to force google to do their work.
Just don't do the snippets for German sites. It won't take long for the reduced traffic to cause German news organizations to beg to have the law repealed.
Thank you. I'll take the liberty of posting this except from the article which should give some perspective...
"But even though Google is trying to push Wallet in Google Play (formerly the Android Market), it’s also worth noting that the platform’s openness allows developers to make their apps available through other app stores, or directly from their website. That’s something that Apple doesn’t offer at all with iOS."
"registry" that makes passing tweaks between folks beyond simple and easy
Did I read that right? "Simple and Easy??? -- I mean you can completely ruin your machine if you screw up an registry entry and it's not exactly intuitive. Window advocates complain about the user-unfriendliness of config files in Linux but they are a dream compared to the Windows registry and are much better documented.
I think it has it's strengths. I have one laptop with it and one with Ubuntu. I noticed in your post that you only compared it to other Windows OS's and I think that when you are using other OS's, which also have their issues, that you'll see some of the limitations in the Windows world. The main thing I think is wrong with Windows in general and this includes Windows 7 is that it is sluggish compared to Ubuntu, Linux Mint, FreeBSD and so on. I used to dual-boot my Windows laptop and I always felt like something was wrong when it was running Windows. It was so crisp and responsive under Ubuntu but when Windows was running it was slow and sluggish. And I'm running almost nothing in the background. Of course, Windows Vista was even slower to the point of being unusable.

Can't imagine that a company called "iSEC" would be biased on this matter.
Then you might think that the Patriot Act is about patriotism??

it's reportedly going to be open sourced and merged with Tizen
This is what I'm waiting for as well.
I've loved the reviews on it. But what about apps?
It takes forever to start up
That has not been my experience. It starts as quickly as on my daughter's Iphone.

Security through Obscurity. Windows 7 isn't actually safer, it's just that no one has it.

shutting down the .gr domain is surely going to affect a lot of german users
Imaging what shutting down the .DE domain would do...
Only if you take the red pill.

Since when are corporations allowed to go above the law?
Since corporations started supporting political parties.
I just tell them I don't use FB, I use google+.
