The slant comes from the fact that AOLTW is a competitor of Microsoft. In the entertainment arena as well as the computing arena. AOL has made it long known that they want console access to the home entertainment center, whereas Microsoft now has three inroads: WebTV (not much), and X-Box (much more intersting). Microsoft is also partnered with DirectTV for "Ultimate TV". So, the slant comes from investors (with bail-out money, really) who have ties to the competitor of a product reviewed. This is the inevitable conflict of interest when entertainment and reporting collide. In this day and age it is critical to consider the source and consider the source's motives. Because healthy skepticism is more importanct than it has ever been.
AOLTimeWarner is a huge company, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone in the entertainment industry that hasn't done some work for some subsidiary of AOLTW at one time or another.
You said it well. And that is why I always look for hints of editorial slant.

Let me see if I get this straight. Vocal slashdotters want PVRs that can skip the commercials that pay for the production of the programs. Vocal slashdotters also want the networks to air programming without product placements that pay for the production of the programs. And vocal slashdotters feel it is their right to dictate what programmers can put on the screen at any given time.
My recomendation would be that vocal slashdotters stop watching TV as it is obviously not what you want. Listen to Geeks in Space re-runs for entertainment. OR, if you do enjoy The Simpsons, or god-forbid, The West Wing, you can pay for it out of your pocket or put up with the aforementioned "intrusions".
I like The Sopranos so I pay for HBO. I don't know when quality TV programming became a natural right. I don't pay for The Simpsons out of my pocket, so I'm willing to put up with whatever the fine folks at Fox can dish out. And when I don't like it anymore, I'LL STOP WATCHING.

Judging by the article, these computers were probably Macs. I think Sun should really use this to push StarOffice into the Edco market, where Wintel boxes are gaining prevalence.
I had a similar experience. My understanding is that they have different techs who resolve DSL issues vs. Voice issues. In a pinch, DSL Managers will send out any tech regardless of whether the tech is in the DSL group. Once I needed a splitter installed and had Verizon send out a tech. Unbeknownst to me, this guy was a voice tech. I told him that Customer Care had instructed me to request a splitter installation. He put in a 10 cent spillet into my jack and said "your new voice line is working now!" Suffice it to say that I was too perplexed to argue. Fortunately, because a previous DSL tech visit had left me with no phone service, I had an invaluable DSL Manager Nextel number. Two hours later, the DSL Techs showed up, scratched their head, chuckled and then installed the DSL splitter.
I don't think Verizon is qualified to respond to actual trouble tickets. Adding fake trouble tickets is just plain cruel!
