  1. Re:How a project is maintained on When Enthusiasm For Free Software Turns Ugly · · Score: 2, Insightful

Hate between software camps is rarely fueled by the developers of the software itself. Forks might be driven by need, frustration or anything else, but once it is done, developers get on with their lives. When Canonical dumped GNOME panels (and Shell) to make unity, there was some bad blood for a month or so, Debian move to systemd was bit more brutal, but it all passed.

This is nothing compared to the hatefest that slashdot harbours. Any news remotely related to GNOME or systemd will quickly summon rabid commenters. Sure, if you agree with the haters, you will see it as a good thing (conformation bias?), but it does mean that comment section of this site is more suitable for gruesome entertainment than gaining additional information.

Case in point http://tech.slashdot.org/story..., where mildly interesting story about GNOME cash flow spawned comments that ranged form misunderstanding to misinformation to just pure fantasy. I was a bit surprised that someone from GNOME (Sri Ramkrishna) was still on /. and did try to clarify the situation, but it turned out that this was in his job description as a member of board of GNOME. This is how sick the /. community has become.

I was wondering, it GNOME devs were that crazy to break their apps everywhere, and they aren't. On fedora xfce installed gedit 3.14 http://pbrd.co/1FQXEGT
There are some goofs, like duplication of minimize, maximize and close buttons. The xfce window decoration is there and works. Menu items, that were in the global menu, are now in the window menu (except for "new window", that seems to be gone, but Ctlr+N and tab detaching works just fine).
Can you point to the DE, where gedit is really broken?

What do you mean? If I knew my bitcoin wallet doubled its value every year, I would spend/invest NONE of it. And since everyone else would do the same, the value would grow even further and further, until it wouldn't. Then there is incentive to spend, thus flooding the market with bitcoins, which results in inflation, which forces to spend even more, before value is lost even further. Sounds like solid economical base to me.

I understand that everyone concerned with security should be a bit paranoid, but the proper way to handle it should be through code review.

And systemd is 5(!) years old. It has been a while and glacial Debian has finally adopted it, as slowly as expected. How much longer do you expect it to be around before considered mature?

As per all "ask /." articles, most comments are borderline manslplaining (meaning, author has no experience in the field, has idea what he is talking about, but somehow it makes sense in his head and he is happy to share it). As in all diverse communities, some try to suggest that this is a bad idea and shouldn't be attempted in the first place. Such suggestions are soon thwarted with detailed explanations, why it is [a good idea|ethical|for the common good].

This sort of entertainment is why I keep reading Shashdot. Keep up the good work.

The root cause of all abuse is thinking other people are less important than your self, and as such can be treated worse than you.

Antisemitism comes from feeling of oppression (I guess. I really don't understand this one). Child abuse often justified as for their own good. Honour killings come from need to maintain honour. I am quite sure this is not a complete list. Even if the end result you propose would solve everything, how do we get there? Because just believing everyone is just as important as everyone else doesn't solve the abuse I listed above.

So tell me, how does shit-talking on the Internet reduce violence? What particular form of abuse is it efficient at solving?

Profanities won't solve it, nor am I advocating for them. But sometimes people in these sort of debates are so oblivious of the issues, I can understand why every other word a swear word.

So, your friends respect women, jet make sexist jokes. Oh, if only those women could see past sexism and enjoy the laughs. Just like in school, the poor sod, who is being called gay for not acting manly enough, should just laugh with everybody else, because come on, that is just a joke.

At first I thought I should just go with classical "if X says that Y do Z, it means that enough of Y do Z for it to be a problem", like, if for some woman only 20% (made up number) of male colleges make sexist remarks, it is surely not ALL men, but still it can make life unbearable. When I was in school, I was bullied by about 4 of 33 classmates and, believe me, the fact that it was ONLY about 10% didn't help.
BUT reading your comment further I seriously doubt you would even notice if you were misogynist. First, you just disregard their experience with "didn't see it, you must be making this up" and then say they should shut up about it. Then, to prove the point, you engage in sexist activities (at least passively, by accepting sexism) as a revenge (WTF?). And to top it all, you say women should accept hostile workplace environment, because it is just the way it is, when in fact it is YOU, the tech people, who make the tech environment the way it is.

You are just like those, who say "I don't see racism around me, so it doesn't exist".
