I have on old dell latitude as my machine to program sbcs. I had a good experience with dell laptops with linux, although I'd be wary of new ones, there have been a couple of problems I have struck with new ones i.e dell xps series.
yes they are greedy b****** they have just insured that i will not buy their products, I can get along without their products, they are NOT essential to my life today or in the future, they can go to hell. I don't watch tv it's all Ruperts f****** propaganda and if if it's not him, it's some another b*******D trying to influence the sheeple. I'm glad we exported that prick to the US, (oh sorry, he exported himself) good f***ing riddance)
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is publicly funded. The 'TV Licence' was done away with here in the late 1960's IIRC. In the 1980's, the ABC had a promo campaign that said it cost the Aussie taxpayer 8 cents a day. Probably much more than that now. It is similar to the BBC in that it is independent of whatever govt is in power (although both major parties have attempted to stack the ABC board with people sympathetic to them).
In Australia, you can get your telco (yes, even Telstra will do this) to block all premium SMS being sent to your phone. I did this for myself (I'm with Optus) and a friend, who was getting premium SMS messages that he did not ask for every Sunday morning starting at 7am!
Cases like this should be viewed as extortion. The fact that you don't have the money to defend yourself SHOULD NOT matter, you broke no law, they have, at best a dodgy case.
Sack the admins, and do something about the system that punishes people for being helpful. Yeah, I know, whistleblowers seem to always have their life ruined for pointing out corruption, etc. but should be rewarded. Oh, I forgot, the corporations run this world, and they don't like disclosure.....
I am fortunate that both my first and last name are common names. Just a QUICK google search reveals about 40 to 50 people with (almost)the same name as me (except my middle name, and that's very common too). I never use my real address, DOB, etc. except where it is important. I don't use social networing sites as a rule; I have a myspace profile, but it contains no real information about me, and I use it very rarely. I have a gmail address that I use as a sort of junk mail address (who cares if it fills up with spam??) If I *really* wish to preserve my anonimity while surfing, I use tor aor some such proxy.
I am in Australia, on a 20GB / month plan at 1.5mbit down, 256k up. I've just checked my usage for this month, and I'm around 6GB. I am charged for both up and down, and pay AU$70.00. Most months I'm using around 8 to 10 GB, with the ocassional month up NEAR my bandwith cap. I've had no problems with or communication from my ISP regarding my usage.
I would be unhappy if I did because I signed a conrtact to get this. The ISP should, and is, honouring it.
Yes, this is why I stick to prepaid. It cost more for calls/data, but they can't force me to stay on / pay ridiculous fees to leave if I find a better deal. They've tried hard though to get me onto a plan (at least onece a month).
I might point out that not EVERYBODY that visits/. is an American. As a non-American, I for one would like to know what this thing is about (and being too lazy, at the moment, to google it), because anything that happens in the USA sure as hell ends up happening in other anglo-saxon western democracies, whether we vote for / like it or not.
On your last point: The goverment owned monopoly (Telecom Australia) which owns all the telephone lines, was privatised (Telstra)
but the phone lines were *kept* by Telstra. Result: Line Rental (yes, the taxpayers PAID fro these lines, then has to rent them back) increased for $30 per 3 moths to $30 a month (i.e. tripled). All the other phone companies in the market have to pay Teltra line rental at the above rate, which of course they pass on to their customers. The price of just about every call type has risen,
not decreased because of competition. Testra does all the maintenance on said lines for ALL other phone companies. I have had a phone line out for 3 months, it seems bacuse I was not a Tesltra customer, not because it was a difficult repair or there were not tech crews available. I realise this is a specific example and not entirely relevant, but it does illustrate that privitising government owned businesses is not always a good thing.
Ah yes, here we go, another free market evangalist. Here in Australia, we HAD government owned industries (Telecom Aust, ALL the utilities). These were all privatised in the 1990's Result: higher prices, less service, MORE failures (maintenance doesn't make money) and the continual carping from the utilites to raise prices even further, because 'we have to make a profit'. It has not been ALL bad, I admit, but it is worse than it used to be.

No that will not happen. your govt does not care about you, it is filled with people who only care about who gives the an advantage in life.

Who are you with? It sounds much better than the deal I get.
Appeals to the Privy Council were ruled out in (I think) 1982. So the High Court of Australia is the highest court.
since when has google ported chrome to linux? Not according to google it aint

Never heard of it in Austrlai either, unless it's PREMIUM sms, I just get the telco to block those
This is exactly the system we have in Australia. There are a whole lot of 'outs' ie if iys is agianst your religion, etc
