  1. ads for concerts on RIAA, This Is Earth, Please Come In! · · Score: 2, Interesting

I always thought of them more as ads for concerts, and then the record companies saw the concerts as ads for the cds as well as the overall image that the band portrayed.
have an image that sticks and people buy the merchandise in order to cover themselves with the image - not just visual, but images more in the sense of idolism.

hell - it has already been shown that songs are just ads - Limp Bizkit has already shown us that when they (well, their recording label) brought back a form of payola to the radio stations with a new twist.

  4. read Lyle McDonald's work on Lose Weight The Slow, Boring Way · · Score: 1

once you get to 10% or so bodyfat (and perhaps even more than that - closer to 12% even), you stop responding as well to the low carb diet.

the overall result that you want is a caloric deficit. you need good fats, and you need protein in order to maintain (And even gain) muscle mass. therefore, the obvious part to modify would be the carb intake. reducing carb intake results in your body having to modify its goals from burning carbs as fuels to ketones - this process takes about 2-3 weeks and can leave you "spacy" in that time. for this reason alone, many people never make it through that period - especially people in our field that need to be sharp in the head in order to work well - high carb diets leave plenty of brain fuel - as do low carb diets over time, but your body has to adapt to it.

other things to consider would be the number of mitochondria in your muscles and how much energy they expend - you want to maximize these in order to raise your metabolism. in order to maximize these, you maximize muscle mass. in order to do that, you have to have the amino acids available to do that, so you need protein intake to be high enough (roughly 1g of protein per pound of body mass is plenty to gain muscle if you are working out).
also consider that protein is more thermogenic - when your body processes it, it takes energy to act on it, giving off heat as a byproduct - which is excess energy expendature, meaning your burning more calories.

in the end, if you have a high % bodyfat (20% or higher), then the low carb diet will make you lose fat very quickly and noticably.
once you get down closer to 15-18%, try the cyclic diet where you go 5 days of low carbs, and then you "carb-up" on the weekends. with this method you will get down even further and you can even add muscle mass on it (rare on other diets).
then once you get under 10-12% bodyfat, you can then switch to an isocaloric diet with a refeed on the weekend and you get the carbs for your mental function (if you don't like the way you feel when burning ketones), you get your fat loss from lowered caloric intake, you maintain muscle, and then the refeeds on the weekends lead to anabolism for a good part of the week.

I personally find exercise to be most effective for me. I can eat more carbs if I want, but low glycemic carbs - then I can train and burn calories that way.
when you burn 10K cals or more in a day, it doesn't matter too much what you eat if you are getting the correct nutrients.

  7. Re:Why it's easy... on Tax Tips For Small Folks? · · Score: 2, Interesting

As deleriously easy and fantastic as that sounds, and also while that idea is semi-valid depending on what taxes you are looking to avoid or what your business is - it should be noted that Bermuda isn't the place to do that.

I am moving to Bermuda next month, have family (in-law) there, I know people that own a variety of small and large corporations there, and I will be president of a company there upon moving.

I assure you that unless your corporation is an insurance company or a reinsurance company, there isn't much tax haven to be had my "moving it there."
(for starters, unless you are either of those types of companies, at this point for the most part, they won't let you move there)

Bermuda has gotten a bad rap these days because of misinterpretation of Enron and Global Crossing going under and them having offices in Bermuda.
There are close to 2000 companies that have offices in Bermuda and there are well over 100 entirely based there - but the only ones that would see it as a "tax haven" in any signifncant part are the insurance companies. If you are a multinational company, then having some offices in Bermuda that take in foreing revenues will save you some taxes - but unless you have a large amount of foreign revenue, it isn't going to help much incroprating there (not to mention that they very likely will not let you).

When you say "tax haven" - what you really mean are the Camen Islands. There are *many* companies (esp hedge funds) that are based in Bermuda, but that is just for where they have employees - even they incorporate in the Camen Islands.

So if you really want to avoid the taxes, you would want to incorporate in the Camens, have your employees based in Bermuda, and then somehow get citizenship outside of the states and lose your US citizenship... noting that with that you will lose all of the positive civil liberties and open doors that having US citizenship nearly automatically allows you when travelling in friendly countries.

I have used the web version of Turbo Tax in the past and used it this year as well.
I filled it out as soon as I had all of my forms - at least a month early and perhaps more.
I owed over $600 and decided that I would then wait it out until closer to the deadline, might as well gain some more interest off of my money.
My information was already in TurboTax, so I just left it there and it would still be there when I came back.
I then went back to it a few days ago and flipped through the info, double checking that I had entered it all correctly.
Then I went ahead and followed through with it and oops, TurboTax raises the prices the closer it gets to the deadline.
If you file early, the fees are X price, if you wait until a week before, they are 2X - and perhaps even more the closer you get.

part of me wanted to be angry about that, and part of me wanted to pat someone on the back for the good idea.

  15. any input? or read only? on Pinnacle, Online Grades, Skipping School and More · · Score: 2

if there is any input, then that system is no good. it would be easy to get the source, see what is really collecting the data (likely just using POST to a script) - then you can bypass the applet and just brute force your way through the number combinations (since it is the first set and not the last, you know that it is much more likely to start with certain numbers) and then last names (there is even probably a public resource with all of the student names).
This is especially easy if the server isn't looking for excessive attempts from the same IP. If you crank through them too quickly, it is feasible that it will actually slow the server down, so finding the right rate is of relative importance there.

if it is read only, it isn't that huge a deal if someone else knows that you failed history and have a lot of homework this week - so who cares?
technically a privacy issue, but nothing too much and it doesn't sound like they are getting any info that they could then either use against you, or use as a way to act as you to some other party (were they able to get bank account numbers, the full SSN, or other data like that, it would be something to care about).
