Probably after March 16, 1981. According to the Status Meeting minutes, several hundred Asteroids Deluxe units "were boxed with the coin mode set at 50 [cents] play. These units will be opened and reset." [emphasis added]

The same document contains a mention of a game called "Cat Box." As a cat owner who dreads the kitty litter ritual, I really shudder to think what that's all about.

I always thought this was discussed in terms of resolution; e.g. a typical NTSC broadcast provides 330 lines of horizontal resolution, a standard VHS tape 240, and a DVD 420. This is discussed a lot more clearly (npi) at the Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity site. Don't be alarmed by the date, the information hasn't changed.

  5. Still not easy to find on the web site on Michael Dell Sees Future In Linux Desktop · · Score: 1

While the interview is interesting, finding the Linux section of the Dell web site takes a couple tries (at least for me). I'd venture to say you're definitely not going to find any systems with Linux installed if you start from the home page and travel the "home and home office" route. And of course, you still can't buy a system with no operating system, in case you wanted to try something like Mandrake or SuSE -- or even FreeBSD.

Once I found some systems loaded with Red Hat, I tried to price indentical configurations for Linux and Windows. For example, a Latitude CPx 500Mhz w/ 128MB memory and a 6GB harddrive
    w/ Red Hat: $2588
    w/ Win2K: $2604

So I guess my question to Micheal Dell would be "what's up with that??"

Your question is answered in the article. It's not meant to be a commercial venture, but it is a "proof of concept" exercise -- "This is just research prototype," said Takako Yamakura. "Some say Linux cannot be scaled down. This is just to show Linux is capable of doing this." said.

What's wrong with research without a practical application? I've written programs just to see what I could do with the tools at hand. Those programs might not have gone into production, but I've know I've learned something each time.

I guess I'm the exception then. 'course I don't want to be like everyone else .

I've only used Napster once (found the song I wanted, then bought the whole CD less than 24 hours later).

I got hooked on buying singles back in the vinyl days -- 7 inch and 12 inch 45s with otherwise unreleased B-sides, remixes, live tracks, whatever. My enthusiasm for snatching up these nuggets hasn't waned in the transition from vinyl to CD. Hell, I'll even buy "Part I" and "Part II" if I like the artist/song enough.

Now of course, most of these singles and EPs I pick up tend to be (from my US-centric world view) "imports." It's a rare occasion when a US record company releases much more than the album version along with a throwaway b-side, or worse yet, the radio-edit. On the other hand, I've bought a couple "import singles" that each contained over 60 minutes of music.

    I miss those neat little 3 inch CDs though . . .

It's Hilary Rosen, but that's not important right now.

From the linked article, I don't see where she's quoted as saying it's OK to make a copy of a CD for the car. In fact, it seems that Hatch grew tired of her equivocating, and answered for her. Ms. Rosen seems to be unwilling to classify anything as Fair Use. It might not be logical, but she seems consistent.

Dang, y'all know how to make a guy feel old! Yep, Pong came in a standup version. There were also a lot of consoles sold - long predating the 2600 - that played only Pong (or an un-branded version thereof). Some of them had minor variations, but basically it was a "bounce the 'ball' off the 'paddle'." Mattel's Intellivision was one of the first home console systems that allowed you to play different games. This would have been circa 1975 by the way.

  19. Re:Anybody seen the Phantom Menace Pinball game? on Is Pinball Dying? · · Score: 1

Actually, there are plenty of bumpers and switches on a Pinball 2000 (P2K) playfield. It's just that the contact switches in the middle are obscured by the reflected CRT image. This allowed the programmers to have different targets projected into the player's POV; i.e. one time a left middle shot hits a Martian, another time it might be a giant duck, another time it might be a rocket launcher. (those examples are from Revenger from Mars, the first of the two P2K games, and one which I probably pumped enough dollars in to have bought my own).

The phrase "the machine tracks the ball" makes it sound like some kind of elaborate laser or magnetic sensor devices are included, and while that would be pretty freaking cool, it's, unfortunately, not the case.

For the record, I own a Gorgar machine.

The problem I see with your biological virus analogy is that I don't consciously learn anything from having been exposed to a virus; it is my immune system that learns how to make antibodies to fend off future exposures. What then, is the immune system of my computer? Probably some component of the operating system. So to belabor all of this . . . Windows has not gotten better and stronger at fighting off viruses based on previous encounters with computer viruses. Indeed, one could argue that it has been made weaker by the inclusion of such features as Windows Scripting Host - it is losing T-cells with each release.

I'll also have to respectfully disagree with your contention that ILOVEYOU was not "deliberately malicious." Certainly the "bugfix" program that it attempted to install on infected computers had the potential to wreak further havoc.
