You would benefit from examining page 10 and page 78 of the report that I linked to. You'll find that ~17k of those firearms deaths were suicides and 789 were accidental.
A little more than half of firearm deaths were people who wanted to die. A little less than half of firearm deaths were people who wanted to kill other people. A little more than 2.5% of firearm deaths were due to mis-handling or improper training.
Which of those deaths will draconian gun control [1] prevent?
For kicks, check out pages 93 and 94 and 101. (Page 101 is about babies!)
in fact, the figures you cite support mass transit: it shows tons of unnecessary deaths for an entirely optional tool in life.
Seriously. You have a blind spot. Trained, professional drivers are rarely the cause of traffic fatalities. Bicyclists are rarely the cause of traffic fatalities. [2] I am amazed that you worked in NYC and don't understand this.
Build out the rails and put only bikers and buses on the roads. You'll have that traffic fatality number down to nearly nothing in no time!;-)
[1] Don't misunderstand. I'm *not* saying that the current gun control is draconian. [2] Is it maybe because there are relatively few professional drivers and cyclists on the roads? Maybe, but I doubt it.
Short answer: I don't know if Mplayer will play that audio track on the QuickTime video in question. I've not had trouble with the QT movie files that I've run into. However, QuickTime is always a little iffy on OSS video players. It seems that there's always some new version out in the wild.
Details: I've installed the complete codec packages with every mplayer install that I have. [1] (I'm not gonna link to them here. I bet that you can suss out the link from the mplayer download page.) I've had trouble with no QuickTime videos that I've randomly run across on the Web. [2] I've had nothing but trouble with QuickTime VR files. They usually play every frame contained within at a very high speed. Navigation of the scene is impossible.
[1] Please keep a local copy of the codecs package. The mplayer folks say that the vast bulk of their traffic comes from folks downloading the codecs packages. It'd be nice to save them a buck or two.;) [2] I don't usually *seek out* QT videos, so your failure rate may be higher.
<rod_roddy>All those stats *and more*</rod_roddy> are contained in the linked PDF. Why clutter the original post with even more facts that support my stance when those who are interested can find out for themselves? : )
you enjoy driving your car. good for you. i don't enjoy thousands of unnecessary traffic deaths in this country. and for that reason, i have no problem taking away your toys. deal with it, child
The quote from the exec and the sentiment from Ars Technica don't quite line up. You can have a "property" that provides income and development potential for a decade or more. You can develop that "property" without beating it into the ground. *points to Half-Life* : D
If I had a nickel for every time I saw some jerkoff running a screen that cost more than my car at 1024x768, why... I'd have nearly ten dollars by now.
The survey's probably pretty accurate. 1) Most folks are damn morons that don't know the first thing about the hardware they've purchased. 2) Most folks don't have the 3D hardware to do games on those displays at their native resolution. Hell, I'd be willing to be that many *GAMES* can't run at those resolutions.:/
[allcaps] why, you don't have to!!! with your purchase of sXs assembly maker you can be up and running in under ten minutes!!! it's fast and easy and only $999999.99!!!
I see. You must be rich or something./me can't afford *TWO* Internet connections and is quite happy with the multi-megabit "solution" that is port forwarding over SSH.:) I'll stay with stuff I have, thanks.
Let's not fool ourselves here. The average home user *NEVER* installs Windows on hardware that he assembled himself. He probably *NEVER* installs Windows from a standard installation disk, either.;)
It seems to me that per-function optimization settings would be useful in very few real-world cases.
Truly. This fellow -who may or may not have been involved in date rape- is merely confused about the usefulness of said software.
Heh. 0->30Mph @ ~6.5 seconds is exactly how I drive.
The folks in my American city seem to tolerate it just fine.
How are you defining "Desktop Database"? This feels squicky to me. Your answer should be enlightening.
I'll get to the rest of your message later, after I've done some research.
Heh. I guess that I did need to extract more information. :/

And *nix and BSD have been doing this for *ages*. : D
K. Start using Mplayer [1] and VLC [2] NOW. They ignore the executable parts of MSFT's multimedia formats.

*psst* Hey.
I'll paypal you a dollar if you get me an ounce of liquid XML. Think about it, kid.
Cite?
Either that, or they'll become legitimate businessmen. Seems like everyone wins, no matter what, eh?
I don't want to be at work, but guess what? I don't have a whole lot of choice.

Job? I don't have time to get a job! Who will sit around and bitch about being broke and unemployed then?
Do what now? ;)
Like, say being screamed at for fourty ear shattering hours a week in a "call center"?
*seconding the "who brought up rape?" sentiment*
Surely you're not a Feminazi who calls *all* sex between a man and a woman rape? (Yes, they exist. See: http://users.livejournal.com/_allecto_/34718.html?thread=148382#t148382 )
