They are farming out via services their other products as well as their most valuable assest "researchers".

they concentrate on a base install, and allow the other distro's to work on the niche features...ubuntu for gnome desktop, kubuntu, yolinux for kde desktop, knoppix for live cd stuff, etc.
I believe that Debian can still be a great force, however I also believe they need to relegate some of that responsibility to other distro's to avoid fragmentation to the point where they no longer are a factor (ok, extreme case in the distant future).

With all the debian distros out there I feel alot of repetative work is being done. If the Debian leadership would "officially" ask other debian based distro's for assistance on creating a new path for debian and I think that many of the larger distro's would agree as it would allow them to accomplish more of their own work.

I would think the 9year sentence was overly harsh and the judge knew this, however it does send a message and sets a high jail term for precedence. Since the "message" has been sent the appeal will be quick with minimum jail time and a fine.

Now to really stop spam, you will need to stop all the idiots that read and buy that crap that's being advertised and put the owners/ceo/presidents of the companies that are advertising via spam in jail.

To stop spam you have to remove the money that fuels it's existence.

I would like to see..Ubuntu replace Debian as the base system for many of the current debian distros out there. I think with Ubuntu could promote other distros to focus work on the application and desktop layers while keeping better package compatibility.
This could be what UnitedLinux attempted to be.
No dis-respect to Debian or it's developers. I believe Debian as a base could have been managed better to take advantage of the many advances the "Deb based distros" have made.
