Actually, Utopia does exist... It's a lake (Lake Utopia) found just outside of St. George, New Brunswick Canada. Needless to say my family has a camp on the lake. Nice place to go when it gets hot in Boston. Notice that I didn't say "too hot" as it never really gets "too hot" in Boston, at least not copared to the Southern States.

I'm not so sure about how good they are at bullet matching. I know that the TV shows (CSI, etc) and prosecuters want the public to believe that the bullet matching process is infallable. However, bullet matching, like so many other things, can be subjective and only explains a probability that the bullet was fired from a particular gun rather than proving it for a fact. Only when they develop and implement a tagging mechanism as the bullet is fired will we have a reliable system (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/display_article/162928/12/none/none/News/Laser-etching-may-help-investigators-ID-bullets). Even so, criminals and hackers would find their way around these systems by reprogramming the tags to match one owned by an innocent civilian.

    Crappy?

I've worked with Cisco PIX, Shiva Lanrover VPN devices, and Checkpoint firewalls. Of the bunch Juniper is the most powerfull and easiest to implement.

Granted, I started working with the Juniper firewalls on the SSG-520 platform running version 5.4 of the ScreenOS. So, prior equipment and versions could very well have been poor...

But for my money, today, I'd recommend the Juniper SSG platform.

  5. Yeah, Right!!! on $90 Asus Sound Card Whips Creative's Best · · Score: 1

A sound card is a sound card is a sound card. If it quacks like a duck and I can hear it, then I am perfectly happy. Seriously guys, looking at the graphs in the link I see minor differences between the cards. However, I didn't see anything that indicated that I would "hear" any difference.

I have a used Audigy 2 ZS pro hooked up to a Creative 7.1 surround sound speaker system. My MP3s (384K VBR), games, apps, etc. all sound perfectly fine. As other posters have stated, if I want to have a quality listening experience, I'll use my digital optical out to my Denon receiver. The sound is just too limited and distorted by computer speakers.

In fact, it's always good for a laugh to listen to the infomercials tell the audience that a pair of small speakers and a subwoofer will equal the quality of a decent 5.1 surround setup. But that's another topic....

  7. Banks and Online Banking on UK Banking Law Blames Customers For Insecure OS · · Score: 2, Insightful

Say what you will about Paypal and eBay, but Paypal has the option (at least in the US) to pay $5 for a Security Key. This provides two factor athentication, something that you have (the security key) and something that you know, your password. Something that has been arround for over 20 years. Most current trojans are out to grab your ID and password and store them for later use. You can't do that with a constantly changing security key number.

Banks, like any other business, just do not really care about security. What they do care about is liability. It's the same as insurance companies. Which costs less, added security or the losses involved in security that is "just good enough"? What we are now seeing is that this balance is changing as a result of an increase in computer trojans that are out to steal money.

Until the banks provide the consumer with better security options, in my opinion, the liability falls on their doorstep.

Good for him. There are a lot of things that kids and teens can do if they are given support. As for being a network/systems administrator, I believe that he is one by definition. Almost anyone can be a network/systems administrator. What is hard to find are good skilled administrators with tons of experience. However, he definitely is not a network engineer (Hey, listen to all of the mechanical, civil, etc. Engineers scream in unison that only THEY are engineers). Network engineering requires a much higher skill level, one that takes into account the entire infrastructure and a large range of experience with all types of systems and devices. David BTW: Can we dispense with the MCSE bashing? If there were no MCSE program, there would be just as many unskilled people applying for technical positions. Also remember, and I am guilty of this too, not everyone has the experience or institutional knowledge (which brings a greater insight to problem solving) as you do. The question is, how quickly do they learn and do they repeat the same mistakes.

  11. Underage drinking on Facebook Photos Land Eden Prairie Kids in Trouble · · Score: 1

There have been a number of good comments here on this story. I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

From what I understand, the high school received a CD with Facebook photos on it which depicted students partying. The students that we reprimanded were members of the High School sports teams who had signed an agreement to not drink alcohol and to avoid situations where alcohol was being consumed. I believe that the school was within their rights to act as they did with some exceptions.

Those exceptions includes students who had pictures of them around alcohol at weddings or family events. These are private affairs where the parents are responsible for the actions of their children and which should be excluded from both the agreement and punnishment. I'm not saying that all parents are good parents and that all teens behave at weddings and family events. However, these are different situations than a party environment where no parents are present. However, I have a feeling that these kids will be lumped in with the rest given the state of Zero Tollerence (we're too dumb to figure out the appropriate punnishment for each situation so we are going to abdicate any attempt at thinking and just meet out punnishment based on the rules, wether they are fair or not) in the schools today.

I am firmly against schools actively seeking out this information. However, if it is dropped in their laps (as in this case) then they should act on it.

While there is a shortage at retail outlets, it's an artificial shortage being driven by people trying to make a buck off of it. Of course, at some point supply will exceed demand and these entrepreneurs will be left holding stock. Then you are going to see a glut on eBay and the prices will drop. David

  14. Penetration testing is next to useless on The Spy in Your Server Room · · Score: 3, Insightful

For most companies, physical penetration testing is next to useless. Why? Because management expects IT and employees to act as security guards. IT is the gatekeeper of your ditial information, not your physical hardware. If you want a physically secure facility, hire security personnel. Tailgating can be easily solved by having security guards present at each key card entrance, forcing each person to badge in. Otherwise, it is just a show put on by management to get funding for more security toys. David

When we are finished testing, we then put the application into production using RHEL. David
