Well, I'm not entirely sure about that. I would say that the Russians did the most to ensure a speedy end to WWII, although the American contribution should not be underestimated, especially in the Pacific.

As for WWI, when you really look at the politics of that, it looks like a bit of a fight between distant family members blown out of all proportion.

  2. We Brits aren't all like that. on The Euro · · Score: 1

Personally I like the Euro, and I like Europe.

I also think that when a British person starts rattling on about the World Wars, it's only because it was the last time that we were important as a major military power, and we need to remind everyone about it at every opportunity because then perhaps people will think that we are great once more. Of course it usually projects the image of the British as a bunch of xenophobic idiots whose feeble minds are controlled by jingoistic newspapers like The Sun.

What made (and still makes) Britain great is not it's rather dubious performance in two world wars, but rather it's countryside, it's culture, and it's continuity. Sadly, however, the sort of people who refer the the wars think that a country can only be great if it sends its sons in to battle to be slaughtered like animals.

Also, calling a fish gay is not bigotry. At least no more than welshing on a bet is, and I've never complained about people using that phrase.

You really have some problems that need to be sorted out. For one, you need to get some perspective on things. You also need to be a bit less two-faced (I mean condemning violence against gays, and then daring me to have a go if I think I'm up to it).

You aren't the only person who has to struggle. I have suffered from abuse from pretty much my first day at school. You should perhaps try being Welsh in England, and see how far that gets. OK, as an adult you only get comments, but I spent years suffering things like being tied to a radiator (whilst turned on) and then beaten. Or smacked in the face by people who I thought were friends, just because other kids would laugh at the crying sheep shagger I still find the jokes made about welsh people funny, if they are funny.

Look, I've obviously touched a raw nerve here, but I really do think you are over-reacting. The comment was about the fish, using a word which has been hijacked from it's (also hijacked) current meaning. It was not about gays.

I also think that gays should also be game as the butt of jokes in the same way that straights are to gay comedians.

As to one of your earlier comments, I think you will find that there was quite a high percentage of gays amongst the Nazi party. I know that the SA was more gay than straight.

Wow! We're getting massively off topic here, but still...

Scary though it is, a lot of people have mentioned the fact that feelings like this towards children is more common than a lot of people would believe. There was an article in the UK Daily Telegraph which said that a likely reason people react so violently to paedophiles is because they are not that many steps remove from being one themselves, and, if you think about the unconditional love given by parents to children, then think about how much of a step it is from that to sexual love.

I personally don't agree with that bit, because I have 3 children, and cannot even imagine in any form of sexual context.

  19. Re:CAN'T WIN AGAINST SCIENTOLOGY! on Scientologists Force Comment Off Slashdot · · Score: 2

I think this is probably false in most cases actually - most pedophiles are quite aware that what they are doing is wrong, but for whatever reasons either can't stop themselves or don't want to stop themselves

You are so wrong in saying this. A lot of paedophiles see nothing wrong in what they do, and consider themselves the same as gays before homosexuality was legalised. There was a programme on the UK tv show Panorama which interviewed a member of the Wonderland child pornography ring, and he said that he considered himself and other paedophiles to be in relationships with the children whose lives they are destroying.

Well, I for one am quite happy to see these cameras in use in Britain. There is actually quite a lot of violence/crime on the streets here.

A report a few years back said that you were more likely to fall victim to mugging, burglary, car theft, sexual attack (not including rape), and other violent acts (which do not end in murder) in England and Wales than anywhere else in the world.

These cameras are there to protect the public at large from quite serious criminals, they are not looking into your bedroom at night, or monitoring your normal activities.

I know it might be chic to say this is a violation of ones freedom, but in reality it is something that is needed to help tackle a serious problem in the UK.
