I don't think it's as fundamental as a intellectual difference between Europeans and Americans it's just the dominant paradigm and it's domination is from being adopted early like M$ really when the choice was between MS-Dos, IBM-Dos and DR-Dos the best didn't win. The paradigm shifted to Windows and here we are coping with the result.

The best doesn't rise to the surface the most bouyant does and scum floats too.

Not that I'm criticising either of you but I think your debate is false because you are both really saying the same thing - choice is good but I'll stick with my way thanks.

I embarked on my economic choices during the ethiopian famine back in 85. As I read up on the way in which humans waste so many natural resources to produce one set of foods I decided maybe I could do my small part to reduce my consumption. Meat & dairy went our of my diet and I feel much better for it.

With iD opening up the source to Quake 1 it introduced an interesting conundrum - you can re-write the client to cheat.
Many people have proposed solutions including checksumming the client etc. but there always seems to be an arms race type scenario to defeat such schemes.

Security through obscurity isn't exactly perfect but it seems to be a better solution than making the software Free. iD were going to sue somebody that made a derived closed client from GPL'd code.

  25. The time just got distributed on Faster · · Score: 1

My slice on this one is that technology has reduced massively the amount of time spent doing work.

Unfortunately instead of distributing this "leisure time" evenly amongst the population it has tended to polarise.

In heavily technology focussed countries ( I take the UK as my example) the manufacturing base and agriculture that employed most people has reduced the number of employees. Thus saving humanity loads of time - that of the manual workers laid off. Unfortunately those that manage the technology now have more work to do. So instead of providing more "leisure time" for all it has oversaturated in some people at the cost of others.

Humanity needs to reconsider this distribution of time. In monetary terms the poor are getting poorer and the rich are getting richer but time seems to distribute in the opposite direction for the many.

We need to re-distribute the workload not the wealth!
