    My guess is that this is who they will make their ongoing cash. Charge u for the updates to the processor and let other ppl worry about the end user apps.
    I think their answer about backwards compatibility is a fudge. They said it was so ppl didn;t have to re-compile but it's hardly thw worlds gr8est problem to those ppl who know about such things.

    If u think being abusive in ur speech has no consequences then I feel sorry for your kids.
    When you are trying to discuss something serious the other person saying something like It's not your money fuckhead (a quote from a recent discussion I was having) has a negative impact on the conversation. One of the things it does is bring the discussion down to a pointlessly personal shifting the focus from the issues. It's the bully's tactic. It does cause pain.

    How many diseases do you know of that only effect a small portion of any given population? Can you name one? That isn't the point, in fact it's the opposite that's important. For most diseases there is a small portion of the population that is naturally immune. This comes from genetic variation. Do u get it?

    not sure they gave them to us for free but supplying our school with a programming machine made much more sense than a bunch of C64's
    Plenty of the UK geeks I know cut their teeth on the Acorn wonder machine. Precsisely because they DIDN'T have the bells and whistles of the other home micros ('cept Elite, Repton, Revs, Chuckie Egg, Frak!, etc. etc. :)
    Command lines almost FORCE knowledge on you.
    Mind you does Redhat work on an Archemidies?

    It's a Bad Thing because it is horrific. Plain and simple.
    What is the intended use of thse experiments? I still need persuading.
    My guesses :
    • Monocultural meat supply. Meat producers like uniformity and predictability. Aside from the questionable nature of meat farming (some other time) monocultures hold the potential for disaster. A disease that affects one will affect all. This is why GM foods are wrong and why cloning animals is wrong. Genetic variation is an essential aspect of the evolution of the flora and fauna of our planet.
    • Mythical right to breed. Most of the attempts at validating embryo research is to "help childless couples". If you can't breed there's a reason. That's life's lottery. I would like the $ spent elsewhere.
    • Breeding identical animals for experiments. As you obviously love animal experiments obviously it won't keep you awake at night. Try visiting one of these places or watch a video. If you still fail to be moved seek medical attention to have your empathy levels initiated.

    Jealous, yes and no I guess.
    India is a beautful country. Of all the places I have visited it has left me with the most indelible of impressions.
    The abject poverty I witnessed really rocked my young world (I was 16 on my first visit) and gave my a humilty I carry everywhere.
    Like most governments hooked on GDP they fail the people that need the most help. I'm jealous I don't live their with all my trappings of technostuff.

    Er, I think that they just made a super-computer (of whatever capability) is testament to that. That's my whole point.
    My original comment started as a bemoan to the sub-contracting culture of US companies to make a short term profit. This, like most things, has knock on effects never imagined. M$ sub-contracted to India I think and now they build a Linux Beowulf. Good for them.
    BTW, India has a much better education system than US!
    Well, I've visited both countries and from the things I have seen I would say both (like most I have visited) need to invest in their own people more than they do.
    You will be sweeping their doorsteps as a humble and honest person I would gladly sweep anyones doorstep. Sadly for me I was born with the choice and had to learn my humility the hard way.

    I bought an MD for my gf for xmas.
    It rulez. Uploading mp3's to ur mp3 player EVERY time you want a new set is a pain surely.
    We can make a new MD from our mp3s on HD but once you've made the disk you can just pop it out and the next one in. MUCH quicker.
    Who fancies lending their 32Mb Flash card to a friend? I can give my MD's away and not be too bothered.
    Ok when my mp3 hardware has 256Mb as standard then it might be worth it but 32Mb just isn't enough.

    Cool, all they need now is a welfare state.
    I hope they spend some of the money they save on education and sanitation.
    Even if you managed to get a 386 and VGA monitor, built your desk out of mud you've still got a long wait until you can afford to have electric installed.
    As for security for some places the first item on the tick list is a front door never mind a firewall!

    As usual we trade convenience / price for security.
    All a hacker would have to do [is] go into that server and root around looking for the keys of other companies.
    Surely if you managed to get access to the file system with this sort of clearance plenty of exloits are possible anyway. In my experience this is more likely with M$ based stuff than *nix, however it really just highlights how the majority of our systems are single user computers with multi-user capability tagged on.
    Storing CC numbers on a shared web server that also stores your key does sound a bit of a no-brainer to start with if it's security you're looking for!
    As for the story, it's a bit thin on detail and thick on supposition.
