It would be even more hilarious if the market swung again in HD's favor and HD comes out on top in the end. Think, discount HD players (since we KNOW they lost) vesus expensive Blu-Ray (since we KNOW they won).
I own a 'overpowered, overheating beast' of a laptop because _it is_ my only computer. I primarily use it like a desktop, but since I'm currently in college (and a comp sci major) I need something I can lug around when necessary to do work. My point is, different people have different needs. Your parent sounds like he/she has similar needs to me whereas you sound like you need something on the go. That is, assuming you're not playing devil's advocate.;)
Easily could be a test email address that he uses for only that purpose. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. That doesn't mean I'll use the product however. You have two cases. Either (a) the coder is malicious -or- (b) the coder is sloppy. If I'm paying for a program (g-archiver's site says it's 29.95) then I expect the code to be of good quality... and having debug code in does not count as good code in my opinion.
Also, I'm kinda interested in his market. Thunderbird has an option to download/sync to a local machine. I'm curious why you'd want to use yet another tool when a decent email client has the same basic feature.
This is slightly true for me. However, (and I may be in the minority on this site) but my 'free time' is spent doing non-computer things. I see enough of computers during school/work so I like to do other stuff in my spare time. Usually this is stuff outside (biking/tennis/hiking) or building stuff. I may be antisocial but I'm no basement dweller!;)
They're out in force today.;) I saw another post that was on the side of Microsoft and they came down hard on it as well. I guess that's what meta-moderation is for... (though I have yet to get one of the hiveminds in my meta-mod)
Exactly! And frankly it's more of a social thing playing mario kart on a console versus playing Counterstrike in your dorm rooms. Thanks, but I don't need any help in not being social!;)
earlier in his article...
Retail stores like Best Buy are selling PC games and PCs with integrated graphics at the same time and they are not talking about the difference [to more capable gaming PCs]. Those machines are good for e-mail, web browsing, watching video. But as far as games go, those machines are just not adequate. I agree with you. I don't play games anymore (unless it's with friends on a console). They just don't interest me, so why should I spend money on a computer with a good graphics card if I won't use it. It seems like he's under the assumption that everyone plays videogames. Probably that's true within the people he hangs out around. I would say he needs to get out more.
Our family has a golden retriever and the same can be true for it. She'll get into this crazy fits and if you don't act calm it will end with (a) the dog laying down tired -or- (b) the dog biting at someone.
The same stuff happens with playing tug-of-war. I bet if they did a study on golden retriever owners they would find the same thing:)
I encountered the same thing with my local internet provider (though they 'only' had a 4-hour range). It's pretty ridiculous that they expect you to be available for a range of hours. What I found worked, and might for others, is to make them call me at work when they're x* amount of minutes away.
* x being the amount of minutes you need to stop what you're doing and get home.
May I recommend doxygen for your documenting needs. Does what javadoc can do + more (can create 'call graphs', works on several languages, and outputs to html, pdf, manpages, rtf etc etc). It is truly an impressive piece of software.
I would take it as if you introduce the binary drivers (that we can't use source to track down problems) then it's not fair for us to have to figure out what happened. Aka when you add stuff that may have introduced instability we're not going to help you. I find that reasonable. Your mileage may very.
I don't know anyone who only has AIM, so we'll all cope just fine without them. You can count me as one. All my friends (that is those who actually still log in) use aim. Works for my uses...
You don't watch the SciFi channel today and think what you see, is real, do you? I would certainly hope not. Full of cheesy dialogue and bad special effects... that would be quite the awful world.
Joking aside, I'm curious why you originally posted to my post? It's off on a tangent from the discussion and we all know that word games on this site aren't going to convince anyone to change their beliefs. Unless you're looking for a flamewar?;)
Ok, I do indeed agree with you that it is not feasible (for most) to spend the initial energy getting it up and running. It definitely has improved within the last couple of years! I was just afraid that you were thinking (a) since it's not practical to me (b) then it's not practical at all. I'll stop there and refrain from getting too nerdy by discussing how (a) doesn't imply (b);)
I do have say that Mac does interest me because I do prefer the UNIX(y) base. I'm currently a poor college student so the price is a little steep for me, however I'd still like to give the Mac a try at some point...
Linux has never struck me as practical, from a user point of view Could you explain what you don't find practical about it? I'm curious, because I find it very practical being a programmer. I find it performs better than Windows doesn Do you mean a 'normal' user of computers... aka the masses?
Publicly admit their Holy Men to be as sin-full as everybody else Not sure why you were modded as funny but oh well... Even the way you worded that 'as everyone else' shows the problem. And note, I do have faith in Christianity so this is from that perspective.
There's fostering (in some circles) that people of faith are somehow better than everyone else. That doesn't make sense from a biblical perspective. There's not a hierarchy of sin in God's eyes. They're all 'against his will'. So that's one fallacy of some religious folks. That while I may do X, this other guy/gal does Y and that is SO much worst.
Secondly even 'Holy Men' are human. Just because they devote to pursuing an ideal doesn't mean that they don't make mistakes. In fact, I believe, it's impossible to ever reach the ideal*. Does that mean that it's not worth pursuing? I'd like to think not. Now, I have more respect for an organization that admits its mistakes than to try to hide it. Just thinking pragmatically, priest will be less likely to molest if they know the Catholic Church is open about such things.
But I thought you said no sin is worse than another? (just answering the logical question that can come up before someone asks it..) That's in God's eyes. I don't have an issue with people doing what they want (gay marriage, drugs etc). We're all entitled to our own opinions and because I may disagree with something that doesn't mean that it's right to tell them what to do. Aka we can agree to disagree. I'm a firm believer in that. Anyways, 'sins' that I do have a problem with are those that infringe on others... aka murder, rape, stealing, molestation etc.
I didn't mean to go so long but this is an issue that I feel very strongly on.
* By ideal, substitute the ideal of the particular faith you believe in (if any).
You may be correct. To me, however, it's heartening to see something more technical in nature. Would you rather see another Microsoft, iPhone or XML etc article? I'm tired of seeing the buzzword articles. Hopefully this is the start (yeah right) of a new trend.
Exactly the same story here (except mine is 11-7 but close enough). Being a computer science major student I find that one has to basically be a workaholic, which is not conducive to sleep. About an hour before I want to go to sleep I start something that allows my mind to get off work-mode. This is normally reading a book but this could be whatever works for you. Note: play computer games does not help;)
Honestly, one of my friends has the variable sleep pattern and he's not very healthy (always tired, gets sick often, overweight). Now, there's more issues than just not sleeping (doesn't exercise, overeats) but I would imagine that horrible sleeping patterns is a factor. Since I normally get a good night of sleep I notice how crappy I feel if I don't.
My favorite quote is this (page 132)
One of the reasons we refer to the program as "Vista Capable" (as opposed to 'Vista Ready') is because the requirements are to assure that the PC will run Vista. -Not that the PC will run the premium features. Apparently a customer is suppose to somehow figure out that nuance...
Should do it, yes. However did he (a) take down the name of the person talking (b) get MS's response in writing? Without those to things... it's a shame but but at least he learned how the world works before something more important.
He's learned an important lesson (before an actual important issue like his car/house etc). Always get it in writing. Always take down the name of the person you're talking to on the phone. It's unfortune, but you can't take people at their word. Also the person you're talking to is not in contact with everyone else in the company.
It is a shame, I'm not busting on that. I would likely be disappointed. But I'm just glad he (hopefully) learned his lesson before this happened with something more important.

I'm curious as to how it looks. Sure you don't want to post a link to it on slashdot ? ;)
Exactly! And frankly it's more of a social thing playing mario kart on a console versus playing Counterstrike in your dorm rooms. Thanks, but I don't need any help in not being social! ;)

It's not. But neither is news on (a) Vista (b) iPhone (c) XML etc. In addition to a meta-moderate a meta-edit would be good as well ;)
