Its really a shame you got such an arsehat response.
I'm as big of a linux zealot as the next person (here), and for me helping people out in a good technical manner is as much as i can do to inform the "masses" that linux is quite capable.
to me, it sounds like you stumbled across a bunch of die hard narrow-minded and not very experienced people, and i'd like to think that you've found the exception rather than the rule.
i guess one could look at this type of problem in quite an analytical flowchartesque way.
do you want the upgrade?
can you upgrade easily?
how badly do you want it?
is the cost of upgrading to hi?
pretty much if you need it you need to swallow the cost, if you just want it, then you dont. ok want and need can be a little blurred at times, but at the end of the day, if its too painful to upgrade, just dont.
in my experience in IT, major upgrades just sometimes have to happen, its a matter of fitting them in the most effective way possible, which sometimes is the lesser of n evils.
from a professional POV, (IMO) just stop whinging and start planning..:-)
For instance, I know someone who won't use Linux because it won't play Netflix videos on demand.
I'm not a netflix subscriber (I'm an EU resident), but if some company wrote a player for Windows, couldnt some company write a player for Linux? I mean, its just software development, right?
i moved from australia to NL 6 years ago. i found the language wasnt really much of a problem because most ppl here speak english better than i do.:-)
for me the saving grace moving to a non native english language country (NNELC) was the international brands of things. you may not be able to read the label, but the packaging looks the same.
another question i get a lot (even now) was why i wanted to move from australia to NL. for me it was work and only work (dot bomb era, no jobs in AU)
I'm really glad i made the move. my life is much richer for it and my experiences so much more varied. i'm heading back to australia permy in the coming three months, and i'm extremely sad to leave as i now consider EU to be my home (i'm moving back to AU for family reasons).
The problem: after that every single update to the kernel is going to break your computer badly. And that happens several times a year.
this is not my experience with ubuntu. if i have compiled my stuff manually (ala the oldish intel wifi drivers) a kernel upgrade doesnt break my system badly, at least in my measurement of badly. i just re-compiled the driver, no worries.
IMO badly means files missing, corrupted, unable to compile, unable to mount (altho, if you're unable to mount, thats a sad, sad day)
IANAL + IMHO, sitting in a cafe with friends mucking about with a green laser pointer (one of the "high power" jobbies is not a legit use of a laser pointer.
However using one for astronomy, sitting in a room doing whatever you need to do with it (IANAA - Astronomer) probably is. I would wager that most cops would be able to tell the difference here./P
I like to read my technical books cover to cover. not so much because i will remember everything, but because i will remember some stuff that i wont find by doing a quick google then copying and pasting the relevant search items.
Having said that, if you know a particular domain well, googling your requirement is much easier.
The instant that starts to change I'll start including postgresql in the entry level packages because I know my competitors be will too. why not come in ahead of your competitors and do it now?
anything that you want to take across a boarder from/to the US apparently.

we're not all like that :-P
everyone wants their cake and wants to it too.)
Don't! The cake is a lie! realise the truth, there is no cake.my hat off to you sir, that is the best sig i've seen in ages.

emphasis mine. I cant help but wonder if you're a nederlander...
damn you kids with your fancy acoustic coupler. back in my day we used fire and blankets, now get off my lawn!

roger that. i've been using mythtv in NL where the ads are seem to be more arbitrarily placed in a programme. ad skip doesnt work in NL for me.

yeah yeah, and i suppose you think crowded house was from the land of the long white cloud as well..
and not to mention the tourist favourite at the zoo, the dingbat.
pawning = taking the goods to a 2nd hand shop to sell. they need not have been stolen, you can pawn your own stuff as well.
"Yah, dont worry mum i'm just going down to the pawn shop to get rid of this old stuff"
you say pawn the same as porn, at least in australian english.
you dont do research before dropping a few hundred in $local_currency ? that information is easily findable on the tubes.
i wish i had the mod points for you. i lol'd.
you're cleaning americans?
