    You sir are an idiot.

The more you use your OS- the slower it gets. Browser histories get bigger and take longer to open. Search bar suggestions take longer to load (as the data gets more bloated). Folders take longer to open as there is more to list. 'My Computer' gets slower with every drive you add since it feels the need to refresh its data with the latest usage and sizes. Sometimes programs install themselves to context menus and that has some overhead when right clicking. How about programs that have background processes always running... these didn't come with the OS (I am looking at you Java- where the hell do you hide?). And why can't more registry items slow down windows? Searching takes time. Storing it in memory takes... well, memory (which could cause you to swap).

You're right in that an OS doesn't slow down on its own. It's additional applications that do it. But most people don't have a computer to JUST "use" Microsoft Windows. And for some other typical applications (browser, office, email)- usage causes more overhead overtime as the program tries to become smarter or has to show the user more data.

There MUST be more going on here than has been released.

My big question is- when this person was born... did his/her parents or doctor make a choice as to his/her gender? Did he/she have 1 of each, or something in between and get it 'fixed' with a little nip tuck? This happens- and a lot of times people choose incorrectly. Is this the case?

I just can't believe somebody causing this much controversy has had 100% natural his OR her genitals. My vote would be- 'Tough luck, you chose wrong'

But if everything is natural and in tact down south (inc. eggs+plumbing)- then it must be a weird genetic anomaly. I don't yet have an opinion on this, yet...

But having run track for 8 or so years- I can with all confidence say that it is NOT fair to have the physical equivalent of a guy running with females. There are amazing female athletes, but the performance scale is not equal. And to have women compete with men (as many /.ers are recommending) would shadow the amazing accomplishments of some insanely talented women.

At my school there's nothing about copyright being handed over (in fact, as to TurnItIn, faculty are enoucraged to use it, but have to make it optional; usually means doing an annoted bibliography if you refuse)

TurnItIn should not be a replacement for an annotated bibliography. If you're not required to cite everything, then you're probably not getting a good education (Chees0rz, 2009). This is an important skill... As a side note- It always angered me in HS when the teacher would leave comments on my paper like "your words?" Yes they're my words- or I would have cited/quoted it.

if a single paper is valid as course work in more than one course, and you hand it in twice they will consider it plagarized...If a prof really needs new work just put it in the bloody course requirements.

It does not take much to seek this permission. Also, a verbatim copy of the original paper would be very difficult to effectively use for two different classes... so only an idiot (read: most college students) wouldn't make some edits (ie. Use the same research, prove different thesis). Many universities have this rule, but given Professors are People- I doubt many would object to two SIMILAR papers with two SIMILAR class appropriate theses (plural of thesis??!).

I would think a better model might be to establish minimum fees that more closely resemble the true costs of connection. Say your "base fee" is $20 but your connectivity actually costs about $100 net to the power company -- Well you are going to need to offset this difference some way -- either by buying $80 of power from them or by giving them $80.

Do you come from a city or something? Do you understand how rural parts of this country are? How about we hire you to go tell Joe the Farmer that his minimum monthly rate just doubled b/c his only neighbor Farmer Ted got caught in a wood chipper.
If anything, the town should have to subsidize these costs. Aren't utilities government subsidized? That would cover it.

Maybe it's a bad thing and we should be more urbanized, but America just isn't laid out like this. At least not where I am from...

Being from Maine- we experience power outages quite frequently during the winter, sometimes we are without power for a couple of days (if half the state is out...). The electric company provides a service to these lines and takes care of its customers. By being connected to the grid, you are given a guarantee that power is available when you need it- and if not, they'll fix it. So if my imaginary solar panels stop working- they provide the service of guaranteed electricity, and then I pay per watt. I think it is fair to have a price on this peace of mind, as well.

Each house connected to the grid HAS to be an expense, whether it draws power or not. But I don't think charging specific users is the right answer. They should have a reoccurring connectivity fee for all users, and perhaps subsidize the cost of electricity by #solarUsers * fee.

But your minimum charge would serve this purpose as well.

I had to fake a couple of letters, and I'd probably need to look up a capital Z, but other than that... it's like riding a bike; slow and steady at first, and then it allll comes back.

And you know what? It was a little slower than my print, but looked a hell of a lot better than my typical chicken scratch. It slowed me down just enough that I could think things through while I wrote, rather than write faster than I could think (legibly).
