    The great irony with that commercial is that even when that thing was made, the PC represented an attempt to resist centralized control. Even in 1984 that commercial was bogus misleading tripe.

    When you are destroying data it is far better to err on the side of caution. In this case the solution that "sucks" is more appropriate because it's safer.

    Manually manipulating all the data first kind of totally negates the ponit of trying to automate it.

    Once the theater owner objected to his behavior, it was really only a matter of trespassing. That is a local PD matter.

    Yes, and there are far more important federal crimes for the FBI to be concerned with. You really have to wonder what this particular agent had to have done to get assigned this sh*t detail.

    All law enforcement agencies have priorities and resource constraints. They can't all go total SWAT over every little jaywalker. Nor would they want to. They're career minded just like everyone else and want experience that will look good for promotion purposes.

    You're the one with strange law enforcement fantasies.

    The rest of the story is pretty irrelevant.

    This is what this is all about. Many people view Canonical as untrustwory for one reason or another. I could cite a whole litany. However, that's not the point.

    Many people find reason to be suspicious of Canonical in a way that isn't comparable to anything regarding the FSF or Apache. It's not a remotely comparable situation.

    As a general rule, CLAs originating from any corporation with the standard "fuck everyone else" style charter should be met with skepticism. They're not your friends. They probably aren't even your ally.

    Where are the competitors here? What companies can the victims of these jack*sses flee to? If the answer to that is the sound of crickets, then "communist" price controls are entirely appropriate.

    They are appropriate for the same reasons that public utilities are heavily regulated.

    I care about security and safety. Also as a side effect, I get often get better performance. I don't care about "sticking it to the man". I am just trying to prevent the man from infecting me when he tries to "stick it in me".

    The final responsibility for education rests with the parents.

    As long as you have responsible parents, the problem is not nearly as dire as some would like to make it out.

    If parents are negligent in these matters, it really doesn't matter what fundie shenanigans are going on. The result will be total crap either way.

    Clearly, the use of XP here doesn't demonstrate that JPM is afraid of patents. What they are afraid of is ANY CHANGE. They are a large risk averse company and they haven't been successfully sold on making ANY change to their ATMs.

    Patents have squat to do with it. Even "brand loyalty" doesn't have anything to do with it. Otherwise they would be running a newer version of Windows.

    Many PCs predate smart phones entirely. Many PCs that are older than the first iPhone are still quite useful either as is or with minor upgrades.

    I have contributed to the PC market bloodbath myself. I have saved 2 machines from the scrapheap this year with cheap video card upgrades. Other machines remain useful even without any sort of "fixes".

    Tablets on the other hand, I have thrown onto the scrap pile.
