    Well here's where you lot run off the rails, because that's EXACTLY what it means. You don't get to judge something based on it's "potential" or how you can cast it in it's most positive light. No, you have to judge it in the real world based on what actually happens with it.

    These "science priests" are just pushing scientific hubris, the idea that you never have to consider the consequences of what you do or what you unleash into the world. As long as it's the new shiny shiny then it's all good.

    You just can't hide from what companies do to abuse tech and pretend that it doesn't matter and it doesn't exist.

    So yeah... GMO means Roundup and patent abuse.

    You can't even point to one positive use of GMOs that isn't better accomplished by more conventional means.

    Golden rice isn't even a good poster boy for genetic manipulate. It's entirely unnecessary. You can simply feed people something besides rice. A number of vegetables store or dry well. Root vegetables are particularly easy to store in low tech environments.

    Golden rice is just an attempt to avoid simple solutions to the problem.

    Yes, there has always been a tendency for large corporations to overshadow culinary diversity. That is not an excuse to embrace something that's not just a monoculture but a monoculture that's owned lock stock and barrel by some megacorp.

    I turn my nose up at GMO food for the same snooty reasons I would turn my nose up at boring varieties of produce in general.

    Concerns about safety and patent abuse don't even have to enter the picture.

    That is why this whole big fat appeal to authority is just such big fat nonsense.

    Most people understand "autopilot" to be something that keeps an airplane flying in a straight line. In that regard, the term isn't misleading.

    Even a modern autopilot won't help you in an unexpected situation. You still need a real pilot to handle interesting things.

    Most hardware these days lasts long enough to become obsolete.

    There's always been a huge resale market in old office machines that are still perfectly functional. These machines haven't worn out. They're just a little behind the curve or have been fully depreciated by the accountants.

    I myself have contributed to the sales decline of PCs by upgrading old office machines.

    It's like any real problem in computing. If you don't have the people that are able to deal with the technology platform you've chosen, then you can't implement your project. It really doesn't matter if it's the fault of your people or the platform. You end up with the same result and that's what really matters.

    Trying to teach something that your teachers can't cope with simply because it's "trendy" is really quite stupid and is comparable to the usual corporate nonsense.

    Apple is the NIH platform. If you want something "weird" people hiss at you and call you a pirate. They design based on the most pedestrian use case. What they do with photos is especially atrocious.

    Plus Apple doesn't bother with any sort of video metadata support at all.

    I would put them at the bottom of the heap.

    Something like MythTV or Kodi will just play what you have with no muss and no fuss. Kodi has best in class metadata management. You will also be able to organize things as you wish as not how Apple thinks it should be done.

    Apple proprietary content is prone to breaking due to network issues.

    XBMC was always my 2nd choice and I might sooner or later migrate it when I am done messing with MythTV. I've never really liked the interface of Plex or the fact that it's backend server is such a resource hog.

    XBMC is tops for media management and it really does have a pretty simple interface. The fact that the same interface runs on both the PC and a tablet could be seen as either a plus or a minus.

    It dispenses with the centralized server.

    This is why the Sherman anti-trust act exists. Monopolies are very easy to create in an unregulated economy. Even Smith acknowledged this fact.

  19. What you've stumbled upon there are basic health and sanitation rules as opposed to the more modern HOA restrictions. Chances are that all we really need is the "old and obsolete stuff" and the new "shiny shiny" really isn't the least bit useful.

    Also, these old school restrictions are really limited to real damages that would be actionable in a civil court.

  20. The accusation against Apple seems to kind of make sense but only because I tend to be naturally biased against them. I don't really know if it's BS or not and I will reserve judgement until I see something convincing. The accusation against Amazon just seems weird. I don't see how they could manage that even with their dominant position. The Google thing I have not even heard of. This also seems like something that you really can't "muscle into".

    Size tends to be an inherent problem but I don't think Warren has stumbled across any "smoking guns" here.

    They really should lay off considering how unintentionally funny this "parody" is.

    This issue is more about poverty and crime than it is about a particular scary bit of technology. They have accidentally stumbled closer to the truth of the matter here than they usually ever manage.

    A quick perusal of the benchmark sites seems to show that this varies by benchmark and game. So it may ultimately come down to which particular games you own.
