So why use old-n-crufty known malcode when you could get a clean rootkit (no existing signature) and install it that way. How do you know they haven't?
Wouldn't any sort of firewall that drops packets silently cause these symptoms? What about companies that use VPNs? Is there a network engineer with some insight? Computer networking has always been somewhat of a mystery to me.
You raise a good point. Will this only be available in movie theaters? If it's available for home viewing, how well does it work on an LCD TV? I guess it's an extra incentive to shell out $10 for the theater experience.
I think the safest thing they can do right now is return to their invitation only registration in an effort to close the breach. Then they have to start deleting spam accounts quickly before the spammers adapt to inviting themselves. If they are lucky they will be able to delete spam accounts faster than they multiply.
And how about some common sense about not executing a file called "horny_18_teen.jpg.exe"? You raise a good point. Many average users have "display file extensions" turned off on their system. In that case, the user reads "horny_18_teen.jpg"
Also, executables have a nice "feature" in Windows which allows it's creator to use his/her own custom icon. If a malicious person decides to use the same icon as a jpg, an average user could not tell the diference.
If Microsoft really wanted to eliminate this threat they would eliminate those two "features". Keep in mind that because the first thing you and I do with a Windows machine (besides install Linux)is select "display file extensions" and "view hidden folders" does not mean other people do the same.
I realize it violates the DMCA or whatever (like that's ever stopped anyone), but is there somebody with an account at Damballa that can post which antivirus programs detect the virus? Let me guess, only Damballa software can detect the virus.
Yeah, I should change my sig to, "Life doesn't have an undo button, neither does Slashdot."
I like the FOSS thing but VMware does a good job. When I installed it I was under the impression that it was open source from this page. I have nothing against proprietary software. For my limited need for windows software there is no way I am shelling out cash when I have a FOSS alternative.
As I noted above my whole method of running wine is messed up. But it suits my needs.
Yes, Just I also hate it when the nightly news runs teasers that say something like, "There's something in your home that can kill you at any second. Details at 10."
I don't trust wine for just that reason. I only run it on a VMware image of Xubuntu. Sounds redundant and it would probably be simpler to just install a VM of Windows XP but it's free and open source.
Just how Kraken is infecting machines is still unclear, but Royal says the malware seems to appear as an image file to the victim. When the victim tries to view the image, the malware is loaded onto his or her machine. "We know the picture... ends in an.exe, which is not shown" to the user, Royal says.
This implies that it's primarily targeting windows machines. But I still worry...
BPL doesn't actually use the copper line as a waveguide, but creates a rude radio transmitter in the GHz range, which can cause all kinds of trouble. That reminds me of a project I read about in Nuts and Volts back in my high school electronics class. It was a high pass filter for using telephone or power lines as an antenna. It makes me wonder if the same technology could be used for a wi-fi antenna. I'm not a EE but I imagine if it was possible it would be done already.
1. They have taken entirely too long to come out with 64-bit versions of their software.
2. They aren't very good at change. Basically all Adobe does now is buy other companies that have good software or market share. After the company is acquired they make few efforts to improve the software. If they make any changes it's to make it more bloated and riddled with advertisements.
Or maybe I'm just bitter because they don't have a 64-bit version of Flash and there is no Shockwave for Linux.
It appears the moderators didn't get it either. You got a "5 informative". I probably should have used tags. But I couldn't figure out how to get extrans to work with this comment system. I also must admit I suck at HTML.
I wonder what the cops will come up with the counter this technology. Sure, some departments just want you to slow down, but others just want your money.
My friend just bought a shiny new radar detector. Radar detectors are illegal in some places and the cops can find out if your using one with a radar detector detector. My friend's new radar detector prevents that from happening because it has a radar detector detector detector that shuts off the radar detector if it detects a radar detector detector.
Seriously, this arms race has to stop! I'm sick of using the word detector!
That sounds +1 insightful to me

Actually, the devices in question are both. But, the problem is in the router part.
on how to walk my mom through changing her IP scheme and modify the hosts file? Do I have to go over there?

Don't forget to vote!
Sounds good, perhaps on my next Ubuntu upgrade (I haven't decided if Hardy is worth it yet). I'm too lazy to mess with it now.

must be the reason Starbucks won't let me have more than 4 shots of espresso at once.
Sounds like a dupe to me.

Nobody does it because if you flash your headlights the other people will hunt you down and kill you. (end sarcasm)
Except Salespeople. Engineers generally do not make good salespeople. We tend to be to honest and/or pessimistic.
