    Sure, your pistons have less momentum, but you end up attaching two of them (the outside pistons) to incredibly long and relatively fragile connecting rods. At that point you either have to limit the amount of power/cylinder you're producing (so you don't break the rod), or you need a big, thick, heavy, super-strong rod to handle high loads (power) and vibrations (rpm)

    Free-piston engines for everyone then!

    They were way ahead in 2000, but Asimo hasn't made much progress in the last decade.

    According to the summary, no one else has either.

    Honda is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its ASIMO, the world's most advanced humanoid robot.

    It sounds like there is very little competition in the market for humanoid robots.

    Taking biometric readouts of a facial structure fails the moment someone has a serious traffic accident, gets any sort of illness that causes facial swelling, or simply grows out their facial hair.

    While the vehicle has not been crash tested, it is designed with safety in mind. The Edision2 website states:

    Innovations that allow drivers to walk away from high-speed crashes, such as collapsible space not available in other cars and a shape that deflects rather engages on impact, enhance safety in our low-mass vehicle.

    Keep in mind, this vehicle was designed by engineers that used to work for racing teams. They know how to make a car that's both light weight and safe.

    First thing you should be doing is getting bids from HP and IBM as well as Dell.

    Good luck getting a quote for a desktop from IBM. They haven't sold them for a few years now. They sold the desktop business to Lenovo in 2005, so I would suggest getting a quote from them instead.

    And what do you think prevents them from quitting and moving to the city as rural people have been doing for 150 years?

    Lack of money. Farmers are know to be land rich and cash poor.

    People in towns that these companies move into are free to keep on doing whatever they were doing before the plant opened, or take a job at the plant.

    True, although many people in small towns were on some sort of government aid before the plant opened.

    The employees have nowhere else to go, and you can pay minimum wage and really screw them over.

    Worse than that. If the plant closes, everyone scrambles to move to another town. Housing values plummet. The only way to move is to let the bank foreclose on your house. Now your credit is ruined too.

    It's a chain reaction seen over and over again in the Midwest. It's why so many country songs are about getting out of a small town.

    OTOH, msft copied Google on this one. Does that mean they will copy Google on discontinuing the service? ;)

    One major difference is that Microsoft partnered with Ford on this one. Whenever you do a search on Ford's Sync system, you are really dialing a version of bing411 through your phone.

    Considering they will have to keep the service (or at least a version of it) available for Ford customers, it shouldn't be a major expense to keep bing411 running.

    Do these "mechanical switches" make noise? I remember my grandfather telling me about working in a switching office for the phone company in the 60's. He said there were a million relays in that room, and whenever someone picked up the phone, one of them went "click". The noise was deafening. He literally had hearing loss because of it.
