Have you EVER used that debit card at the same store and provided your address or phone number? If you've ever done that then they have that information readily available.
Most credit card merchant agreements don't allow them to ask for personal information as a condition of sale. It's actually illegal in some states.
The islands that constitute my home country are pretty thoroughly populated, so there's no direction in which a couple hours' drive would get you to a dark spot
I have to ask...why? I thought Microsoft was massively profitable, even today. Surely they don't have to fire all these people to prevent losses?
You have a lot to learn about how Wall Street works. Being profitable is not enough to keep stock prices high. Brokers and analysts come up with figures (sorry for the ads) that corporations have to meet or exceed for fear of a massive sell-off.
As a result, corporate executives often order massive layoffs in order to meet these expectations made by Wall Street to keep the value of their stocks high.
In my opinion, this is a major flaw in the way our economy operates as these layoffs ultimately do more harm than good. Corporations that do these types of layoffs often hire many new employees as soon as it looks like they will beat The Street's expectations and will spend massive resources to train them, only to get rid of them down the line. Employee's are all unique and should be treated as an investment, not a commodity.
I've spent plenty of time working entry-level IT jobs doing various kinds of help desk type work, and so most of the exposure I've had to the field is related to support of other people's computers. I enjoy helping other people out, but I'd rather not be plugging things in and restarting computers the rest of my life.
of why I decided to become a mechanical engineer and not a computer engineer or computer science major. Of course, here I am, sitting at a desk writing code all day.
Viacom extorted a shitload out of TWC for the privilege of keeping the channels. For its part, TWC has agreed to rape its customers with even less lube to make up the difference.
...and extort a shitload out of rival cable operators for the privilege of keeping its channels.
Sarbanes-Oxley may be a factor, but I blame the corporate tax structure. Why do massive corporations pay 35% when medium sized ones pay 38%? It's almost like the government is actively trying to prevent innovation and growth.
I'm not going to fork over $50 just so some company can sell me a few hundred megabytes to balance my checkbook. That's what GNU Cash [gnucash.org] is for!!
I thought that was what OpenOffice.org Calc was for. Seriously, I don't run my own business, so a spreadsheet is good enough for me.
are you going to sit at your computer and listen to every sample iTunes has to offer and pick out the ones you like best, or are you just going to buy what your friends recommend?
"Long winded" and "single sentence" are not your only choices. You'll notice that submissions are much longer than this one.
When I say "Long winded" I mean about as long as the average submission. I just became tired of putting that much thought into something no one will ever read. I was counting on the staff to RTFA and add to what I wrote, and they did. (Thanks Timothy! I take back everything I ever said about you) Realistically, there is quite a few things that are controversial about this proposal, if you want to know more, you should RTFA!
So the entire summary is Thelasko's opinion , with a one sentence description that links to shuttleworth's blog? Perhaps a true summary of proposed changes in Ubuntu desktop notifications would have been more informative.
Well after years of posting long winded descriptions and never getting published, I started posting one sentence summaries. Of course, Murphy had to show up with his stupid law...
Anyway, I originally found the bit about this being controversial here. I decided to go straight to the source and post from Shuttleworth's blog, rather than a third party's.
My employer would never be able to afford vendor reps to fix all this stuff, and so its left to myself and the rest of our small department. I'm the only one with a college education, and the only one from a high-tech background.
When someone dies or becomes injured the plaintiff's attorney will have an easy open and shut case against your employer for hiring unqualified technicians. Health care is affordable, liability insurance isn't.
Obama still won't give up his Crackberry.

This is why I use federal reserve notes for everything I can. I bought my Wii with federal reserve notes. I bought my PS3 with federal reserve notes.
Unfortunately, they don't have benefits like chargeback that a credit card does. Plus, if anybody steals them, you're screwed!
monitor and GPU manufacturers should work together to create polarized computer monitors.
LCD monitors are already polarized.
The use of a red light for night time map reading etc allows the pupil to remain open and there is no visibility lost when the light is switched off.
Anybody know where I can get a red map light for my car?

What about a couple hours' boat ride?
Bravo! I suggest everyone that agrees with the parent post this letter here.
how Wall Street works.
Insert joke here.
The same way Microsoft Works?

I think it should be clear by now that our government officials have never seen any of the Terminator movies.
Even Governor Schwarzenegger?
Why is "human causalities as the result of cyberattack" supposedly unthinkable?

The whole thing is a shell game. Do you honestly thing MediaSentry didn't move their operations elsewhere as soon as they had a Wikipedia entry?
While quite a number of people I know use Windows, almost no-one I know actually uses IE as their default browser.
You know what this means? You need to meet more people!
something similar happening in the past.

For general information the Fundamentals of Engineering Supplied-Reference Handbook is a nice cheap reference.
For information regarding engines, Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals lives up to it's reputation, but is very dense reading.
For Mechanical Design (real hardware, nuts, bolts, gears, bearings, etc.) Shigley & Mischke are the gold standard.
Unfortunately, I haven't read many other books on these topics, so it's difficult to compare. Overall, these books stand out as being good.

So that means everyone in the thread is right and for once on /. we can all sing in perfect harmony, right? I really hope that's the case.
I think so, a little from column A and a little from column B FTW.
Yeah, like these people.
