Geddy Lee's death would be news for nerds because he's the sort of person you would get beat up from worshipping, for good reason. Can you fit the stereotype any better? Would you like to comment on Yes?
You know, I am getting really sick of geekdom. C'mon people. Some stupid ssh vulnerability probably generates 700 replies and this barely generates 300. Pahthetic. Get a life. Go outside. Listen to some rock n' roll music. Life is not staring in front of a CRT (or LCD) for 8 hours straight. Fuck I'm a geek for those previous CRT and LCD acronyms. Just live your life. It's short.
I was browsing around on the TechTV site, trying to figure out if my cable company carries it. I discovered a tidbit in the last paragraph of this page.
TechTV is owned by Vulcan Inc., the Bellevue, Washington-based investment organization of Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen.
Hmmm... is TechTV objective? Do they also have Apple and Open Source programming? I really don't know. Otherwise this scares me.
I think VoIP is great techonology, but I have a hard time replacing a technology that has been working for 100 years.
For instance, usually your phone still works when your power goes out. Not with Voice Over IP, because your DSL router/bridge is dead. I guess you could get a UPS, but then we start adding additional costs to this technology that is supposed to save us money.
The Cisco VoIP solution is also very popular and has some nice features, but be advised that the core of it, CallManager, runs ONLY on Windows 2000. From what my VoIP consultant friend has told me, it's still quite buggy. And no surprise, patching it or making major changes involves rebooting... and your calls disconnected. I think there is redundancy but whether it works correctly is anyone's guess... since it is Win2K, my guess is no.
The fundamental problem is: no one minds too much if a computer network is down. These things happen and people are used to it. But if the PHONE is out everyone from Grandpa to Little Susie is going to be complaining!

Ugh, a D-Link card? I have the exact card they are using in my PC at home. The DWL-650 PCI wireless ethernet card. It is absolutely horrible. Looses its connection all the time for no apparent reason (the USB unit in the other room will continue to work fine). I'm getting rid of it as soon as my Netgear USB wireless comes in.
Indeed, this is not new, or news, at all. They used a system just like this during my brief time as a Computer Science major at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. That was in early 1996!

Tooling around on these things in urban areas makes great sense... but what about Chicago when it is 5 degrees out and 20 mph winds? Who the hell is going to want to be on one of these things? Give me my 4000 pound hunk of metal any day because of one reason: a heater.
Whether you like them or not, realtors are not going away.
Look at how much the auto dealers complained when it started to look like cars might be sold directly over the web rather than through them, making their entire business model obsolete. Most auto companies then made sure that dealers were a large part of any online process.
To expect millions of realtors to submit to the Internet overnight is ludicrous. That's why realtor.com (homestore.com, stock symbol HOMS, yes I am an employee!) has a smart business plan... don't replace the realtors with the internet, get the realtors ON the internet. It may not be the case now, but I would imagine as realtors become more tech-savvy and the internet becomes even more entrenched in our daily lives, face-to-face contact with a realtor will not be necessary. It's probably possible right now with the right realtors and the right circumstances, just not very widespread yet. Online bids are coming soon...
Don't want to use a realtor? Want to do it all yourself? Okay, you can do it yourself independently right now, computers or not. But you simply won't get the exposure that you will with a realtor. Exposure = $$. That's just how the system works. Adapt the system, or overhaul the system. The latter would be extremely difficult and there'd be a lot of resistance.
Forget bluetooth or anything else, let's just make adapters for these to interface with new consoles. Fire up the old Atari factory and start churning out these heavy black beauties again.
This way I can compete with the twitch monkeys. No need for those 12 buttons, just give me the One Atari Orange Button and I'll be all set.

Reading Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy changed my life. I realized that I wasn't the only person in the world with a bizarre, surreal sense of humor. Turning those pages the first time was amazing. I was laughing out loud constantly. It was one of the best things I have ever read. Douglas will always be my favorite author, along with Ayn Rand.
My friend and I were just talking about this. In our opinion, the reliance on digital editing techniques has made directors lazy and has lessened the "soul" of movies. I am disappointed to hear that Lucas is going to use his CGI gimmick again. The old-style rubber costumes look much better! Digital characters are too "perfect". If it ain't broke, don't fix it - is there a real need for a CGI character? I don't think so. It is purely a gimmick.
Funny that the Star Wars characters 20 years ago are going to look better than these current digital characters.
An online game based on Tradewars will be cool, but Tradewars will always pale in comparison to Ultimate Universe. C'mon people! Why doesn't Ultimate Universe ever get the recognition it deserves? It was vastly superior to TW2002. I want to see something based on UU.

Absolutely the worst movie I've seen since Wing Commander.
