  1. Re:I believe this misses the point ... on Steve Jobs And The Oh-So-Cool iMac · · Score: 1
I find that there are only two or three vital programs that I absolutely must have.

    Hm....

Quicken, Photoshop (already addressed though), AntiVirus software, book database, music database (I have over 1500 CDs, and am pretty anal about level of detail), Half Life, Tribes 2....are all I run "regularly". There are, however, a few dozen other games that I don't play regularly (all the I Don't Know Jack series, Risk, Axis & Allies, never finished Alice, never finished either Thief, Black & White just to name the ones that come immediately to mind) which I would hate to just dump. Not to mention the plethora of various utility software like fonts, CD cover/label software (I design CD covers for friends who make their own music, and I have yet to find "standard" templates that "just work" with any of the label sheets available...and wasted hours trying to make my own with no success), etc.

Another obstacle that comes to mind is desk space. I currently have 4 computers hooked up to a KVM switch--Firewall, Solaris box (I work for Sun), Linux box, and PC. Sun provides me with a very nice 21" monitor which I would still want for my Solaris and Linux boxen, and I do need something for the firewall since I don't enable telnet on it at all. Even as small as it is, I would have trouble making room for the iMac, and it's all about monitor and keyboard space since the PC chassis is off in the corner. If the Solaris box could use a USB mouse I could get into a USB KVM and just use two monitors....but there we go spending more money (I'd have to make a damn good case for my employer to hand me a CURRENT machine to use at home, considering how infrequently I really need it and that I only really need it for very restricted purposes).

I suppose if money were no object, I'd just buy the new box, use it for the things I really want it for (which don't particularly overlap with my PC, otherwise I'd be using my PC for them) and get on with life. But unfortunately being able to run i* on an iMac doesn't count as a "must" in my budget priorities.

It's not just pirating software though. I have bought plenty of software--all of the apps I use seriously on a regular basis that require purchase (as opposed to making it optional like Eudora) I have purchased. But now I have a large investment in software, and only Adobe of all those companies is likely to let me transfer my license to a completely different platform. If they even offer the product for the MacOS X platform!

No, if I were to go with a new Mac (as much as I may want to; the i* suite is REALLY compelling to me right now), I'd have to REBUY hundreds of dollars worth of software.

And on top of the cost of the new Mac, that just isn't something I can stomach right now.

My opinion of this case is fairly split. On one hand, I agree with the supreme courts strict ruling that "disability" as defined by the ADA constitutes more than "impairment". On the other hand, it seems to me from the case description that the woman's claim is that the employer was UNWILLING to make "appropriate work modification" as you put it for her to continue working for them. In other words, if you believe her side of the story, the employer was definitely behaving unfairly and there should be some remedy available to her. Unfortunately, suing under the ADA is not the appropriate avenue for that remedy, because she was not "disabled" as defined by the statute.

Of course there is the employers side which argues much the same as you do that she simply wasn't showing up for work. Honestly, my impression of auto companies is bad enough that I'm more inclined to believe that they ignored her request for accomodation rather than believe that she simply stopped going to work.

So the question is, given that the ADA is the wrong remedy for this particular situation, what is the right remedy?

I agree that those things are wrong, but no one yet has cited the where the statute defines "fairly". Quite honestly I would expect such a statute to define "fairly" in a way that was friendly to business, aka allows a and to some extent b (assuming that the original owner of the data reserved the right to send you email of "offers", then the secondary owner would get that as well, whether the offers were the same type or not).

    2) Several games, particularly half-life, Tribes 2, Worms (name your version).

Beyond that, it's not just particular TITLES of software as it specific COPIES of software that I'd have to buy AGAIN despite the fact that the copies I have work just fine. Quicken for starters, but several shareware utilities that I've paid for etc. I guess that goes back to item 1, but while that's one big ticket item, this is many smaller ticket items that end up costing nearly the same amount if not more.

If I could get even roughly equivalent apps for my PC, I'd be running for them (feel free to make recommendations :-).

So far my experience trying to do stuff with my camcorder just to get it to VCD has ended up with horrible quality crap, and I have more poorly organized digital pix than I can shake a stick at. Yeah, I can use tools like photoshop or paint shop pro to generate thumbnail pages, but I still have to come up with names for all that crap. If you believe the Apple hype, they have a scheme that lets you sidestep all that. I wish someone would port their software to the PC world. 'cos I ain't switching to a Mac at this late date--too much tied up in my windoze software (same argument goes for Linux btw, feel free to chastise me profusely).
