I live deep in the midwest, and employment is sparse out here. Also, power tends to be expensive, since it needs to travel long distances and be parceled out in small amounts.
It would be nice if we could do this, but somehow I get the feeling that the political will and financial investment won't be coming, especially as people refuse to take risks in an unsure market.
It's good to know that these guys have such firm faith in their beliefs that they know the only way to express them is to crawl in through the back door.
I tried to join DARPA right out of college.
I was rejected because they said I was 6 pounds too fat for military service. That's right, DARPA members are required to fulfill the same physical standards as the guys on the front lines.
Good grades? Lots of recommendations? Eagle Scout? Degree in a relevant field? Multilingual? Doesn't matter, fatty.
I think the big reason smart people aren't joining DARPA is because they know it's a dead-end career with lousy pay, acres of red tape, and nonsensical rules. If they're going to go through all that trouble, they want to be compensated for it.
Personally, I'd be honored for the chance to be the first person on Mars, even if it meant I'd only be there for a short while, and then die.
I mean, as it now is, I really don't do much. I go to work, I go home. Eventually I'll die, and a few days after that, I'll be pretty much forgotten. It'll be like I was never here.
But if I went to Mars, even if I died, well then at least what I did and where I ended up would be remembered, and that's as close to immortality as a human can get. I mean, some day I have to die. Why not die for some purpose?
Ahh, the crazy shit that persons of either party put into law in order to get campaign contributions during an election year.
I propose we hold a public referendum that, when passed, makes an amendment to the constituion which makes it inherently legal to go up to any congressmen and slap them for their stupidity.

(sigh) They always turn out to be the same in the end, don't they?
