    I have issues with windows.

Windows machines require more admin trips to the server room than Unix's and up time doens't even remotely approach a Unix. To many "critical" patches to be applied none stop. Impossible to keep running.

Yah about 1000 people are going to blow their top at that statement. But I have 200+ physical Unix's with god knows how many VM's on them supported by 3 Unix admins and I have 22 Windows machines supported by 8 guys.

Not hard to do the dollar math there.

I have high hopes for these multi core systems in the future. And none of those hopes involve windows. Again simple dollar math.

So far I find I have to reboot 7 more often than an XP machine. I'm also one of those that have put 7 on a laptop that formally had XP and the battery lasts roughly half as long. And what is with 7 and the missing drivers? The worst is when it says it can't find the NIC driver.

XP from a user perspective very stable. From a guy who has to build web sites that support ie on XP Nightmare.

At the moment the it just works OS that I use, has to be Ubuntu. Never fails to get all the drivers working these days. And I gotta say I never thought I'd see that happen.

( An aside. I kept on trying Vista. x32 x64 laptops desktops etc. Every single time something didn't work. )

Ok I'll say it more plainly XP(SPX) + ieX == unsafe. Or in another way. XP-SP3 + ie8 == unsafe.

I simply look at two factors.
    1. What are the most hacked OS browser combinations.
    2. What OS browser platform requires more time and dollars to support by almost every web shop in existance.

Ask those questions results in XP and IE popping to the top.

It's time for XP to fade away.

Actually there are lots of devices on the market like the iPad. ( Problem is device definition. It's still not nailed down. So this argument is pointless. )

Apple is NOT bring something new to the market. Apple is literally creating the market. Apples marketing is the envy of every other tech house on the planet.

They single handed created the mobile music market. Yah there were a ton of weak attempts. Nerds around the planet will claim they were listening to mp3 5 years before apple came along. blah blah blah. All a sudden apple comes along and bam more music is sold online now than in shop fronts. Fantastic marketing.

The mobile phone. Yep lots of smart phones were out pre iPhone. They all sucked. Even though they were in some respects a superior phone. Apple comes out with a really really dumb device but polished the turd into a diamond and markets the hell out of the thing. All of a sudden the cool kids wanted it. Literally in 2 years they redefined the phone market. Through marketing.

So what are they bringing to the table this time? Well quite simply marketing. This turd of a device will sell. IT will sell in decent numbers. ( Not iPhone numbers ). And where there are sales the developers will follow.

Now Apple could of course completely stuff this up. Not likely. They have a stunning record in this area. Apple people are marketing genius's.

Now will I buy one? Nope. I won't buy it for a lot of the same reasons I never bought an iPhone. But I acknowledge that I am a minority consumer.

Lets hope win7 takes hold with ie9 and relegates the other lesser M$ combinations to the bit bucket.

I don't think a karma related button is going to help spelling or grammar. I have very high karma. So karma solutions are not going to assist me.

On the flip side. I do get very annoyed at people that attack me on a regular basis for simple mistakes of spelling. I mean some people just go off. Like I attacked there home and family kinda going off. All because I couldn't spell swimming pool or something else as equally inane.

    Seriously.

As long as DRM makes the legit use of product more annoying than the illegitimate version this is a never ending battle.

The statement. "This DRM is unbreakable." Is always false. Who ever says it should be fired on the spot. For either being an idiot or misleading the shareholders..

When DRM puts additional requirements on the user it will always result in lost sales. People are fundamentally lazy. When it's easier to use the cracked/hacked/broken/mangeled/slightly buggy version you will loose money.

The legit version MUST have more actual value than the pirate version in order to generate real cash flow. For example: There are no real pirate versions of World of Warcraft because only proper versions are the ones that can give access to the real content. Yes it's a different kind of game. But it does illustrates the point very well. The legit versions of the Ubi games do not add value to the customer. As a matter of fact they do the opposite. Thus making the pirate versions more attractive than the real.

Where is the value add compensation? Something that would restore the balance. The legit version adds annoyance of always on net. But it adds the value of ?????.

Online game saves are not a value add. They are again an annoyance. Once those servers go down you don't have access to your save files. And they will go down on occasion. That now becomes and announce rather than a value add.

Being online enhances the game play how? I mean real enhancement. Not sales talk enhancement that a 12 year old kid doesn't care about.

For the N-th time. DRM only succeeds when it either adds value to the user or enables access to value add that exceeds the value loss of the DRM. ( I mean real value add. )

Seriously look at audio the DRM versions sucked, had issues, broke equipment etc. Then some exec has a light bulb moment and says screw it lets just sell mp3 versions. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that people will once again learn that the hacked version of the game is the most user friendly.

This DRM tactic is going to kill any potential profits.

    MORONS.

I remember looking forward to SPORE. This game took forever to hit the market. Then what do they do. They put crippling DRM on it. So what happens. It becomes the most pirated game in history. I simply gave the game a miss all together.

DRM failed for the music industry. It's failing for Video. It is and will fail the game industry. DRM is only there to make greedy execs comfortable. It only results in yet more lost money and it hurts the customer.
