Want to give me added value? REMOVE ALL THE CRAP IN FRONT OF THE MOVIE!. It's the #1 reason I rip every DVD and BluRay I buy. To remove all the useless crap from the DVD and extract just the movie.
Yes I'm wierd thast I dont instantly watch a DVD that I buy, some sit for a month before I'll watch it, but I dont want to waste my limited time in front of the screen watching a "you evil pirate", buy this , look at this upcoming TV show, etc... crap....
There is ZERO worth for 2nd life distance learning. Having content available on the site for the students, videoconferenceing and teleconferencing is 90000% more effective than doing a animated barbie doll classroom on the screen.
This is so much more effective it's why ALL schools use it instead of second life and it's horribly clunky interface with a steep learning curve. Even a non educated computer user can easily learn from a webcam enabled laptop with a videoconference flash link.
One of the things I though that second life SHOULD have become but never did.... The fricking internet interface in a Avatar interface. There is no Google island where I can search Second life for something and zip there. 99% of Second life is just a timewaster you cant do anything in there. Even when Ira Flato did his Science Friday shows in Second life it was a joke. Oh boy, I can either listen on my pc and easily twitter my questions, or I can sit there in a difficult to use UI and act like I am listening... no thanks.
It had potential, but it never really went anywhere useful.
I'll bet the numbers reflect the "What it's not on the crappy AT&T network? sign me up!" more than what OS it's running.
Honestly, even non 3G service for just regular phone calls on AT&T lately has went from the normal crappy to utterly dismal even in good coverage places like Chicago.
They can. Problem is that you cant get people with Phd's to work for mission control for $8.95 an hour and work in a shipping container.
You can communicate with mars for cheap, problem is the Cost of doing anything within a NASA building with NASA employees is expensive. Give the rovers control software and documents to a university and you could run it for peanuts... Students dont care about working in a non air-conditioned shipping container for nothing.
I though they did not use electric heaters on the rovers but used radioactive heating and aerogel insulation.. or was that the first little toy rover we sent?
What I wonder and nobody has brought up. Why cant it die and come back in the spring? IT should be like any computer/robot and easily recover from a total power failure and restoration.
Why not let it sleep all winter and check in the spring when it may have enough solar-juice to come back online?
This is true, Most of these boxes sold by these companies have utter crap UI compared to XBMC. I only use XBMC because my wife found boxee to be confusing compared to XBMC.
How long do you suppose it'll be before there's no such thing as "broadcast" television and it's all downloaded/streamed from your local affiliate's website?
never. The broadcasters do NOT WANT you to do what you are doing. you will have to watch their crap on their website. They will never allow you to download it and watch it on your own device how you want it.
the only people that will be able to do that are criminals.
Not true. with comcast hating it's customers and switching to all digital in may places setting up a mythtv box is a major PITA. the HD5000 digital capture cards are barely usable. the only real choice is a HD homerun box and trying to snag the channel lineup stream so you can easily match QAM numbers with actual numbers. and then you need to rescan every few weeks because the assholes at Comcast move channels around just for giggles.
Right now trying to get MythTV working well with cable TV is a major undertaking and it will only get worse. Plus you can only get it working if you are lucky to live in an area where they gave out the crapptastic boxes that cant handle encryption.
A year ago? I'd agree. Unless you were using some bizzare tuner card or crap hardware MythTV from a mythbuntu install worked out of the box.
And for $200.00 using one of the ASUS netboxes it costs $200.00 has HDMI does 1080p and has NO DRM plus internal storage and no limitations from where my media sources come from. XBMC has a Live CD that will install all of it with zero effort. adding in SMB to access the storage space in it is also trivial. They need to release something that can entice me away from building my own.
If it has netflix streaming in it, you are damned sure that it will have DRM in it to protect that precious precious Netflix video from all you EVIL consumers.
No Web "2.0" is making blinky flashy animated to everyone. Writing was available with WEB 0.5Beta. There is NOTHING that Web2.0 does to enable it's all about looks and flashy. I was doing web"2.0" things back in the late 90's with that old "antiquated" tech.
CSS does make it easier to change the look of a page quickly, I do like CSS. but Javascript has gone way overboard. I'm tired of having 20X the weight in JS loading for a page than the HTML,CSS and images combined. It's making the web bloated.
Apple won for one reason, iTunes. their PC transfer and management interface did not SUCK horribly like every other mp3 player out there.
Even now the software to manager and transfer your music on non apple ipods sucks horribly. the first thing I did with my iRiver was the firmware change to make it a USB drive so I could avoid their garbage software for music transfer.
But you're right. Pre-iPod, almost no one had MP3 players. Before iTunes, almost no one bought music online.
Really... The sales of the Diamond Rio PMP300 were very high, but the RIAA tried to kill the mp3 player by suing them hard and getting injunctions on sales. Other companies started making players, iRiver being one tiny startup that still makes one of the best players out there. The RIAA and Diamond would eventually settle their differences in August 1999, but by then Rio was a household name, especially among internet users busily sharing MP3 music on the internet using newly created peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software.
A lot of people I worked with had the PMP300 in 1999-2000 as many as I know that have ipods today.
And it makes adult men cry when they watch the odo roll from 149999 to 150000 on a car they bough new 3 years ago... God I need to move closer to work....
Gas will be over $3.00 a gallon soon enough. it's been creeping up ever since that mess. It's simply that the oil companies discovered that big jumps will get americans freaking out and actually conserving. but if you raise it by 0.02-0.03 a month they dont notice.

You are saying this to a person that supports the masses that will....
A. click on any popup they see that says they need to click on it.
B. dont have even a tiny bit of understainding on how their mouse works let alone how the PC or the internet thingy works.
They will go to it in droves because it's "NEW and Improved" and has new "SAFETY FEATURES!"
Those people outnumber you and others like you 10,000 to 1.
The useless solar panels, then we dont have to dust them off.
Nuclear power, makes the sucker have enough energy for 20 years...
You give people too much credit.
If the next iphone is available in "DESIGNER COLORS" they will flock to it like lemmings off a cliff.
I'll bet the numbers reflect the "What it's not on the crappy AT&T network? sign me up!" more than what OS it's running.

It's stuck in the snow, the cellphone is dead and they lost their AAA card.

Two cans of computer duster in quick draw holsters. DUH!
This is not rocket science here...... Oh wait....

Yup, Usenet is still there, and I know of several gopher servers that still are very useful.
But they will not be done right. they will make sure to build in anti-"doing wrong" features such as blocking unprotected audio and video formats

That's because you are not using ReadyBoost(tm) with AstroGlide technology on top of it.

Linux can run the majority of hardware. in fact it runs more devices than Windows Vista or 7 can use.
Dont believe me? I've got 5 scanners that are not Vista or 7 compatible, yet hey work perfectly under linux.
