  1. VERY dangerous precedent. on DoJ Defends $1.92 Million RIAA Verdict · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Now what will stop douchebags like Rupert Murdoch from suing an individual for millions of dollars if that individual makes a webpage with quotes having more than a few words from one of Murdoch's newspaper stories?

The DMCA gives big media companies expanded control over material beyond what copyright allows so that they can make more money.

    No, it can't.

I'm extremely proficient in LaTeX and Word. I know those "powerful abilities" that you are talking about. I use them.

I had to write a 300 page book in Word (not my choice to use Word). The program is buggy as hell and those bugs start showing up heavily when your docs become big. Styles changing on their own. Margins changing on their own. My favorite bug, which took an entire night to fix, was when the @#$%ing program decided to change the font of every single one of my captions to symbol.

Near the end, I was spending more time dealing with the bugs than writing.

  5. Room for improvement on Japanese Researchers Create Skiing Robot · · Score: 4, Funny

Hmmm how can we improve a Japaneese robot? It can transform into a jet fighter. It should have lots of weapons, with an activation system keyed to voice recognition so that the pilot has to needlessly scream out their name every single time they are triggered. It needs a theme song sung by a japanese dude with a rich baritone voice and then for some reason lots of little children backing him up.

    Indeed.

Electro Convulsive Therapy relies on inducing a siezure via small electric currents through the brain. There is no benefit to shocking someone for 30 minutes: the seizure can be induced in seconds. Furthermore, the patient does not need to be awake (and indeed it is better not to be awake, as anasthetic and paralytic drugs will take care of the unpleasant effects of the seizure).

So either China's psychiatry is in the dark ages, "shock therapy" is misinterpreted, or the bloggers are full of shit.
