  1. who deathbed says "I din't watch enough ads"? on Is Advertising Morally Justifiable? The Importance of Protecting Our Attention · · Score: 2

Among the top five regrets of the dying are "I wish I hadn't worked so hard" and "I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends" - not "I wish I spent more time engaging with brands on social media and reading up on the 24 hour news cycle"

Advertising appeals to the temporary, short term interest, and in doing so robs people of the time to pursue long term goals that actually make them happy and fulfilled - like spending time with family, acquiring new skills, or working to improve the lives of others. It's called hyperbolic discounting, and it's the reason most people procrastinate.

  2. Use strict on S+M Vs. SPDY: Microsoft and Google Battle Over HTTP 2.0 · · Score: 2

The Microsoft S&M (TM) standard will mandate the declaration 'use strict' on all pages.

Oh, and I don't think Microsoft can embrace, extend, extinguish this one even if they tried, because everyone knows that IIS is a piece of shit. Apache still has 55%, but nginx is the fastest growing web server; I don't think standards can disrupt what's already a healthy ecosystem.

  4. Office and Outlook? on German Foreign Office Going Back To Windows · · Score: 1

"[clients] to be upgraded at some point to Windows 7, Office 2010 and Outlook."

Returning to Windows for clients sounds reasonable, especially if there are problems with drivers. But going back to Office and outlook?

"According to the government, this will not give rise to any immediate costs, indeed, they expect introduction of these "standardised software products" to produce "efficiency gains".

Standard Mircosoft BS; Office is not "industry standard", many groups are seeking alternatives.

Hmm, this certainly doesn't inspire confidence in their methodology. Right there on page 14, after the diagram with two Telecom Italia's, it reads "In early December 2009, IP Policy staff circulated to Piracy Working Group members a draft plan for engagement on ISP Responsibility issues. "

Or just wine. The 'lite' version of OrCAD bundled with Allan Hambley's textbook 'Electrical Engineering; Principles and Applications" works fine with Wine. MSDN Academic Alliance also lets Software Engineering and Computer Science students (Those most likely to be using Linux) get a free Windows license.

  11. The only problem is, on Bethesda Releases Daggerfall For Free · · Score: 3, Interesting

It's impossible to play and have a hope of finishing unless you're power gaming. None of the main classes actually seem like their made so you could play as them. Unless you already have detailed knowledge of the game, there's not much point in trying to finish it.

That said, there's a feature in the latest patch that allows you to teleport to major areas in dungeons. Don't know how you could play without it. I mean, did anyone ever manage to survive an encounter with an ancient lich or an ancient vampire or a powerful daedra lord?

Then there's also the issue of all the randomly generated dungeons looking like octopuses mating, and that there are way, way too many fetch the foo quests. "Please, I'll help you with your quest to rid Dagerfall of the vengeful spirit, but could you please fetch me my adamantium underpants? I think I left them in a nearby dungeon infested with monsters..."

Does doing your whole degree in MIT really matter that much in the long run? If you're brilliant, you'll go and set up the next Google. But if not, then you'll end up just like a lot of other IT workers, making only 5-6 figure salaries. IT changes quickly. In 10-20 years, tech will look nothing like what it does today. By then, an outdated degree would help, but it's skills that you'd pick up on the job that employers would want. "Get me a CA degree, Honour roll, MIT..."
