The thing is that most businesses overseas from America already operate on our time. For instance, have you ever called a tech support line only to speak to Achmed?

If you have family in a different part of the world, you are already calculating the time difference one way or the other.
Hmm, it's 10 pm here so in Australia, mum and dad are just waking up, guess I'll call them now so I can sleep.

This is no easier or harder with no time zone data, in fact it might be easier because you don't have the extra stepof calculating the time. Hmm, it's 1000 hours now, so mum and dad are just now waking up in Australia, guess I'll call them now so I can go to sleep.

Those aren't really requirements, they are just something that we have been conditioned to accept. It would take a generation to fully implement, but it would make life so much easier for a lot of people. Imagine having to set up meetings with people internationally, instead of trying to computer what time it would be for them based on your time, you could simply say we have a meeting tomorrow at 0100 hours. No more missed connections, and no more trouble of the person on the other end of the phone. It would also make international travel easier. What time does my flight land, 1500 hours. No more trying to coordinate times even on domestic flights.

You see this solution makes everyone's life easier in the long run. Even if you don't do any of the above right now, it's more than likely going to happen in the future with the offshoring of jobs, and everything else that is happening right now. We no longer live in a society that can live and work in one timezone throughout our entire lives.

We should just phase out timezones period. It would be a little complicated at first, but you would soon get used to it.

For instance in Central Timezone USA. We are offset -6. So instead of getting up at 6 every morning, I would get up at 00:00. So on and so forth. I realize it works out quite nicely for me, but I don't see it being a big problem for anyone else either.

  5. Re:Yes, but not the U.S. produced code on Is Off-Shoring a National Security Threat? · · Score: 0

Tariffs are bad mojo. Trade restrictions make it harder for us to compete in the global economy.

Suppose for example that we raise tariffs on steel to keep a steel mill in PA from going under. Now everybody in the US pays more for steel, and any goods that use steel cost more. Cars use steel. Now that our cars are more expensive, other countries won't import them because they can get cheaper cars elsewhere.

So, you see, now not only does the rest of the world not want our steel because it's too expensive, but they also don't want any products we produce that are made with steel because now they are too expensive.

Sure that tariff might save a thousand steel mill jobs, but it's going to cost many times that number of jobs in other areas of the economy.

Tariffs are only pushed for two reasons:

    1) People have a very simplistic view of the economy and don't understand that domestic production and imports rise and fall with one another, and so wrongly believe that tariffs will reduce our net imports as a percentage of GDP. Tariffs never have this effect.

    2) Corporations and labor unions who don't want to compete with the foreign market, so they lobby the government to labor trade in their favor, all at the expense of everybody else.

That's not exactly true. If we add a tariff to steel, it only affects steel we buy from other countrires. It doesn't make our cars more expensive. You're actually discussing a "trade war". We raise tariffs, piss off the Chinese and they raise tariffs on our steal. So the Chinese don't buy as much US steel.

You are essentially correct in your thinking, but you oversimplified it too much.

I for one am not against some form of single-payer system. But I am against a larger federal govt in any capacity. These types of systems should be implemented in a more regional (probably state-wide, possibly smaller than that, city-wide?). The federal govt should not have this much power. They should be only there to protect our sovereignty, and to enforce interstate commerce.

Quote from what I said earlier. Yes it was an entitlement, and I did qualify for federal aid. But as I said earlier that was more the government making an investment in it's future. I now pay more in taxes, hell now I actually have to pay taxes, when before I didn't. So yes, I'm paying these grants back with interest. I'll be paying them back for the next 30 years, every other week when I get paid.

I already stated they were government funded aid. I also don't look at them as welfare, more as an investment in the future for the country. They are actually almost loans, that will be paid back for the next 30 years. Before I went to school, I had no tax liability and got a big fat refund check from the government. Now we get back nothing, which is fine, we are paying back the grants the government gave us. My real problem with welfare is people that are on it, and who will be on it forever without paying anything into the system. If you work, and need food stamps, I'm all for that. I'm not for the people that live in free houses, and get free food, and do nothing to earn it. Unfortunately, welfare reform is a tricky subject to bring up and implement.

I'm not that callous or indifferent. I really don't want people to starve, but I know a lot of people that are living off the government even though they are able-bodied, and able to work regular hours and support their family. We do need welfare reform though. Give it to the single mother that is trying to go to school to make a difference in her life. Give it to the 18 year old man who's family can't afford to support him while he goes to school. Let's stop giving it to a mother with 6 kids, who just sits on her ass living off of welfare. There needs to be reform, and it needs to be sooner rather than later. As I've said before and I will say again, I have six kids and a wife, I worked full-time, had healthcare, paid my bills, and went to school. Did it take me 6 years to accomplish an associates degree, yes. Was it hard, hell yes. My wife also went to school full-time during this period. No she didn't work, it's hard to work when you're in a full-time nursing program. I made sure she didn't. We made do with our salary, and yes we had some help, we got pell grants from the government, and we took out massive government sponsored student loans, which we are now trying to pay back. But we never qualified for food stamps, section 8 housing, or federal aid. We did qualify for a state program that paid most of the daycare we needed while my wife was in school. We live in the land of opportunity, and people need to use that to better themselves.

Is an education the answer, I don't know anymore. Maybe in a better economy, but let's face it, factory jobs in America are going the way of the dodo's. It's just too hard for a company to pay employees, and still make a profit. But the answer is not to try at all.

I did all of this while putting my wife through nursing school, so I didn't have to work two jobs. I like to eat, and have a roof over my head, so I'm willing to work for it. If someone else is not, then fuck them. Let them starve in the streets. There are plenty of jobs out there, most of them are minimum wage, and I agree that you can't raise a family on minimum wage, but maybe you shouldn't have had a family without a long-term plan for the future.

As far as healthcare goes, what the fuck. Do you really trust the government to make that work? They haven't done it with medicare, they haven't done it with ssi, hell, they can't even pay the bills we have now. Let's add another entitlement program that the government can't pay. It's not that hard to get health insurance. We currently pay over $400 a month to have it. That went up 30% thanks to Obamacare laws that were passed.
