What about computer viruses and worms? Some people argue that those are life, especially worms which are able to reproduce in their environment independently without a host.
Indeed. Google already has two hits for the phrase "why does it hurt when I read": the actual (and rather disturbing, but amusing) page the quote was found on, and this page. Scary, isn't it?
Many of the clients I support are constantly asking me "Is there a program that does this? or Can you find me a program to do this" etc etc.
I used to be able to just use google to help me get started but these days the top level searches are all those bloody link farms peddling "free" software
Have you tried SourceForge? That's what it's there for, you know.
Of course by patenting it, the details of how it works become public and once the patent expires the technology is up for grabs for whoever wants to use it, too.
But by then, it might become obsolete before some other, even better display system. And so the cycle repeats...
With BSD code, it's the developer; developers can do just about anything they want with your code. For the GPL, it's the end user; they are guaranteed to be able to modify/update/fix any incarnation of your code
If they can do that, they are, for all intents and purposes, a developer. Sure, they may not contribute the code back to the main project, or fork the code and start their own project, but that's not a requirement of either license, is it?
When Microsoft has shit flashing on the screen automatically to remind you to do updates, it's evil intrusion in to one's privacy. But when Firefox does exactaly the same thing, they're God's gift to enlightenment.
Firefox requires you to restart your browser, but Windows requires you to restart your whole computer.
"Everyone" agrees that Vista is "a failure", even though it's really not.
I think most people agree that Vista is more of a failure than XP was. Why? Because Microsoft is losing market share with Windows now and they weren't then. If Microsoft had released Vista two or three years earlier, it wouldn't have been so much of a "failure". But people got tired of waiting, and starting moving to OS X and Linux.
Better than Visual Studio. Opening stuff in VS makes you wonder if it's trying to factor all the integer constants in the code before displaying the file.
The only time I've ever had diagrams help me is when I am designing complicated data structures, particularly self-balancing trees and the like. Other than that, they're pretty useless.
For another, since they control the hardware better, there are fewer device surprises. That's the real problem Microsoft has. They are so large (and monopolistic) that they are trying to satisfy everyone at once, which is simply unfeasible. Linux has the same problem (how many times has your wireless adapter or printer malfunctioned under Linux?) Apple gets credit for having a great user experience, but at the cost of hardware flexibility. On the other hand, thanks to public perception, Microsoft has a no-win situation: they can't make their system much better without decreasing their range of hardware support drastically, but if they do that all the businesses will complain.
I see excellent things like openSSH, and openOffice. Why choose "OpenLeft", instead of "openLeft"? Because the actual names are "OpenSSH" and "OpenOffice.org"?
doesnt this mean that all products are now just loaned to you, you no longer actually own anything you buy? next will there be property tax on bags of chips? or your cupboard space? I can see it now...
This bag of crisp potato products ("CHIPS") is licensed, not sold. LAY'S reserves the exclusive right to change the flavor of the CHIPS at any time.
That's the specific distributions, not the license itself.
Ah. I see. Well, the first step is to get an operating system that properly deals with multiple and non-admin users.
*cough* Run As *cough*
Of course, it's a dumb solution anyway...
Id rather take my chances with those two, then having to type my damn password every 5 seconds
sudo stores passwords for 15 minutes after each execution, and you can extend the timeout period in the sudoers file. Try a little Googling next time.
Great-great-grandparent post.

For christ's sake, learn to f-ing swear, gawdammit.
"Don't attribute reprieve from malice to that which can be explained by incompetence."
... what?
Yeah, and they had a 747 on the aircraft carrier!
(Karma? Who needs it?)

That still doesn't fix the zombie issue.
And neither does our current system. There is nothing stopping us from using multiple security solutions and heuristics to stop spam.
... I didn't download Firefox 3 when it came out. In fact, I'm still on Firefox 2, and I'm sure a good percentage of fellow /.ers are as well.
Remember: if there aren't any patches for it, chances are that the reason is not that it's bug-free, but that it's still buggy.
Wow. This would be the worst software conglomerate ever. On the other hand, it means that only one company would need to go bankrupt.

Bless those flash devs that have the wisdom and foresight to incorporate the much ballyhooed Skip Intro tab.
Bless those Flash devs that have the wisdom and foresight to note the use of the word "content" in "multimedia content".
Flash index pages deserve to die, with or without a "Skip Intro" button. Long live XHTML!

Then again, with Firefox it takes just as long...
No reason to fix what isn't broke.
What the hell are you doing on Slashdot?

Yes, but... think of the all of the jobs it would create for snails!
