  1. Re:LinuxBIOS in flight computers on In-Flight Reboot? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yeah, 36 seconds a flight. Considering that most of the programming and everything is probably kept in solid state memory, a reboot maybe takes a second or two at most.

The language used for all of this is ADA, which is one devious language to program in. Everything requires exception handling, and every exception needs to be handled. The 2 million lines of code is surprising, not because it seems like a lot, but because it seems like so little.

I'm quite sure that every computerized portion of the aircraft has at least one redundant system too. The aircraft has already been through it's "X" stage. It's been officially given a fighter designation, and they do have a flight of them somewhere. The military isn't going to stick pilots in a rickety plane. If the craft didn't have redundant systems, and the flight suit went out for a couple seconds during a 9 G turn, the pilot would be out. Soon after, the plane would be gone.

The fact that they are still working on the stability is a cool thing. If I were piloting, I'd want my main system to be rock solid and never crash, but I'd also want all of my redundant systems to be rock solid and never class.

The problem with mods is finding the time and motivation to actually follow through with them. In the case of painting, you also need to find space. Oh, you'll more than likely need a dremel.

The next mouse mod for me is the lego chick trapped in a cryogenic chamber. I don't remember where I saw that, but it was a really funkadoric mod. Now, before I start to get cold feet about actually doing the mod...

Honestly, though, why is there a difference between phone calls, door to door calls, and television ads? Why are we so lax on commercials? They are harassing, burdensome, and interfere with my ability to watch normal television. If I don't want commercials, I have to pay for a premium channel, and that usually costs a premium.

I doubt that Mono is on shaky ground. The code is 100% original, from scratch, there will be no code borrowed from MS for the final iteration. This "platform" that has the same functionality as .NET on Windows will then be protected by the very thing that protects Windows from Apple. The court case.

If you look at MS's original GUI, and how it has the same functionality as the Apple GUI, and how MS was allowed to have it... why should Mono be allowed to persist? It's the same concept, although a different approach. As long as there are no patents that are being used to develop Mono, then it should be a legal as NT or Win2K. I have no problem with C# being implemented on the Linux platform. It will just attract the win32 developers that hate the excessive licensing or complete insecurity of the MS platforms.

He said "All you have to do is grep for every line that has an open parens, and you'll get the entire control structure of the program." That's all the reason I ever needed. Putting the open brace on the same line as the conditional is easy to read, and has some good benefits too.

I could sit here and avoid doing my actual job, but provide excellent support. I'm probably more knowledgable about computers than the actual support staff here. I just grin and politely inform them that their contact person is so&so.

When people are reporting bugs and issues, I know that I could give them a really hard time. A log of times, they are frustrated because they need to get work done, and usually within strict deadlines. I'm here to clear the path for them to do this work, the path having been cluttered by my negligence (well, only sometimes.)
