I'm with OP on this - this seems like a non-issue. If you want people to know the part specs, post them on your website under public domain. Version control is a non-issue - if the drawings are in 2D then have a title block. If the files are in 3D then put it in the properties.
First off, is anyone surprised? As a business, I'm making sure:
1) That people don't try to return the product when they screw it up doing something that the product wasn't intended to do (and it costs me money)
2) That I eliminate a potential attack vector for malware which would lead to decreased sales and increased returns (which costs me money)
3) That people are locked into using my products (which makes me money)
This is all about the money people. This isn't about trying to screw over the 0.1% of people who buy the tablet - It's about maximizing the profits. And let's be realistic here - they will be recracked in short order.
+1 This. I am still looking for a Podcast client which is anywhere near what Amarok provided back them. Does anyone know the progress of Clementine in adding podcast support?
I honestly haven't looked at Amarok since 2.2 and was squarely in the Pana camp until Clementine became usable (around release 0.6). Amarok was far too heavy on the resources to be usable and frankly got in the way of listening to music. I guess it's gotten 'better' but frankly I kind of wonder why some KDE-based distros haven't ditched Amarok for Clementine. I would love to see one of the biggies take the plunge - all it takes is one and that causes the stampede.
1) To 30-something geeks like me, Majel will always be Lwaxana Troi. And I agree with the post above, if she needs an introduction you are on the wrong site.
2) Definitely cool to use her as the project name. I hope the final product uses her name as well.
3) If they can't make Majel sound like her namesake, may I suggest using Marina Sirtis' voice? It would be a nice touch.
4) I wonder if they will be able to fold in Iris' codebase?
Why is everyone so scared of the probability of an Islamic based party being democratically elected without fraud in the middle east? We should be embracing the fact it's democratic and fraud free and supporting whomever the people choose.
While it's true that the TP organizers emphasize that they're all about/fiscal/ conservatism, if you'll look at who makes up the movement and who said movement has collectively elected to represent them, it's pretty socially conservative as well, and hawkish, i.e. conservative Republicans.
This is what I don't get about the United States. Why is there a connection between social and fiscal conservatism? Just because you believe there should be legal same sex marriages means that you want to fund everything, raise taxes sky high and spend like a drunken sailor on shore leave? Or that you believe in God means you don't believe there should be nationalized healthcare? It doesn't make sense. You would think that the time is right for a social-liberal/fiscal-conservative party to rise up and take the middle ground.
the USAF is in fact running clustered PS3s/linux - and is getting special treatment from Sony.
I don't know if I would call it 'special treatment'. I'm sure the USAF has quite an involved contract which states explicitly what they are doing and that anything Sony does which causes them issues will be very expensive in fines and the like. The fact that they are a branch of the government and have the ability to make business VERY VERY VERY difficult for Sony is an added bonus. If I was Sony and the USAF told me they wanted their PS3s in hot pink I would make it happen.
Agreed. It's not *QUITE* feature complete yet but it's still best of breed. Once they get the podcast thing sorted out I can see Amarok being dumped for it as the default on a lot of systems.
In the last month, I've had to switch back to LXDE on this machine, because every other WM has become too bloated. Unfortunately, LXDE has its own share of silly-stupid-wt???. For example, cursor size is "forgotten" depending on which application you're in - and then changes at random - if you use the large cursors (for example, ignoring the new cursor size on the actual desktop after a reboot, which is a PITA when your desktop is 3840x1200 and you have to find the teenie-weenie cursor by wiggling all over the place). Fonts don't respect the system settings you give them (in lots of places). Various other problems, all of which just go to show that the linux desktop is a real mess.
I'm running Lubuntu plus the LXDE testing PPA and haven't seen any of the issues you describe. I'm just curious: What distro you are using?
+1 from me. I used to be a hard core KDE fan but I jumped ship after I picked up the laptop. It is my main DE on both my 10 year old laptop and my 5 year old desktop/server. It's light, modern, and doesn't have a lot of additional stuff added in (I'm looking at you Mint LXDE).
My only request is that they build-in something which allows the machine to change the desktop image every five minutes. I know it's fluff and I know you can do it in Bash, but it's a nice-to-have. Honestly, that is the only thing I miss from KDE4.
but I'm totally 'meh' on this. A few reasons:
1) I have the Skype 2.x on my linux boxen and the 5.x version on my windows partion. Frankly, beyond a couple "well that's nice" items there's nothing I really am missing and the 2.x works just fine with everything.
2) As I recall Chrome (as I assume by extension Chromium) can do video chat in browser, as can Facebook.
3) The reason the Skype protocol hasn't been cracked is because there hasn't been a reason for it to be cracked. It has a working client on the big three OS plus a number of mobile OSes as well. Remember what happened when Sony locked down the PS3 and removed the other OS option? That is exactly what will happen if the OSX & Linux clients stop working - piss of the coders and watch your product get hacked to bits.
I don't. I run Lubuntu myself and I actually set it up with the launcher on the side (and auto hiding to boot), leaving the task bar and notification area on the bottom. I find it pretty easy to handle and with the wide screen I get a ton of real estate. I tried Unity back in early 11.04 but it was definitely not ready for prime-time - lags, bugs, unfinished pieces and rough edges. Maybe if I get bored in the next couple months I'll throw it on to check it out.
Third. It has really come into it's own since 11.04. A few outstanding bugs were squashed with that release as well as it just feeling good - like KDE3 was at the end before 4 dropped. I have a few quibbles with the distribution's program choices (I prefer Opera over Chromium or Firefox, Clementine over anything, etc) and LXDE still has some unfinished bits (doesn't have a straight forward menu editor, unable to have backgrounds changed periodically w/o a bash script) but overall it's strong - much better then any of the other ones I have tried.
That being said, I'm itching to try Unity 2D again. It was still pretty unfinished the last time around but it did have a bit of promise.
Depends. Linux Mint LXDE has a metric ass ton of extra stuff as compared to Lubuntu - twitter & facebook apps, feed readers, etc. Definitely not minimalist. Essentially it looks like they shoehorned everything from the regular Linux Mint into LXDE.
Now, several startups are working to make these high-efficiency engines practical for cars, trucks, and light vehicles — but they're under no illusions that Detroit will adopt the idea...'This is Silicon Valley, and what does Silicon Valley know about making engines? Folks in Asia have almost zero "not-invented-here" issues, whereas it's pretty prevalent all over the U.S.'
'Detroit' as he refers to are now multi-nationals with divisons on every continent on the planet. NIH doesn't really apply since common models are sold across the globe with only minor variations (due to local laws). The reason 'Detroit' haven't done anything with the startups is because they have their own R&D factories. Why partner when they can do it themselves better and cheaper?
That's interesting. My S-E Cybershot k790i has taken a shitkicking including falling out of my bike pack on the commute home (without a case) as well as survived all the abuse my 2 year old has been able to muster. Sure, there are scratches and broken edges but everything still works. By far the best phone I've had to date.
Make sure Slashdot actually displays properly on all the major web browsers. I'm forced to use IE8 at work and the survey page doesn't display properly. When the new redesign came up it took WEEKS to get fairly serious bugs worked out. I know IE is notorious for doing it's own thing but seriously. I will fill out the survey when I get home (and onto Opera!)
I personally believe that the mod system isn't really broken, that there are as many insightful comments as before, and trolls are not everywhere. My only real requests would be that funny helps Karma in some way - even if it's only worth half or a quarter of insightful - and that meta moderation does something that we understand. When meta-moding comments from years ago, I fail to understand the goal of it.

So what you are saying is that God needed to add Automatic Updates into religion?
Actually, I would prefer a changelog.
All they had to do was hire Chuck Norris. Problem Solved.

contributing webOS to the open source community
Under which license? GPL? BSD? Apache? Open source means a lot of different things.
Seriously, I want the story on this one.
We are quickly finding ourselves in a society where we lack an absolute morality authority.
You say it like it's a bad thing and that it hasn't always been this way.
Agreed. It's not *QUITE* feature complete yet but it's still best of breed. Once they get the podcast thing sorted out I can see Amarok being dumped for it as the default on a lot of systems.

What the hell is the battery life on one of these things? Three minutes?
My only request is that they build-in something which allows the machine to change the desktop image every five minutes. I know it's fluff and I know you can do it in Bash, but it's a nice-to-have. Honestly, that is the only thing I miss from KDE4.

seems like yet another step forward in killing traditional cable companies
Yet these same cable companies are the ones most likely providing you internet access. It's evolution, nothing more.
