Plain and simple,Corel Office was way too expensive for most users to be an incentive to buy.A price of 80-100 CAD (50 - 70 US$ for those of you south of the border)would've give them the volume to make up in lower price. It's simply called not knowing the market you're trying to sell to.
As for Corel Linux...that deserves no real comments,a distro incompatible with it's parent or other distros (one huge kde package ) with an "all or nothing" installer (never fixed) and completely out of sync with the fast evolving Linux software (can we say here Debian unstable).
Plain and simple, bad management and expectations clouding the reallity.
Actually you are mostly wrong. For 2 years now both HP and Compaq have give the option to eiter recover witout formatting (HP ) or backup your data and reinstall from that backup using Quick Restore(Compaq). If you would have bothered to actually read those options on the newer computers you wouldn't post outright lies about these restores.
As for Apple you just don't know. The latest Apple recovery CD's...you know the ones that are coming with the iMac's on 4 CD's will happily format your HDD without any other option. So again: you may want to check your facts a bit before ranting about things you don't know.
>>I'm talking again about Joe Sixpack who blindly clicks "accept" on the license agreement.
You mean you DO read ALL the licence agreements for ALL the software you're installing?
You either aren't using Windows at all or you install only a handfull of programs or you are indeed a veeeery patient man with a lot of free time.!:-)
I may be getting it wrong here, but if Corel buys back the stock from Microsoft that's still 60 Milions in their pockets without doing anything.
That's pure profit. So why does everybody see this as a bad news?I'd say it's time for party at Corel
HQ.Even if they don't buy it back that still leaves them with enough cash in hand to operate for another year or so.
Did anybody tried it?I'm donwloading as I type but
I found strange that for a packager that will work
with 4 different package managers they post a source file. Not that is too hard to type make,make_install but I really would've appreciated a deb,rpm as a first demo_of_concept.
Just wondering.
>When my Linux server is booting, I know when something's wrong >by how long the [OK] takes to appear, so even the [OK] is useful.
Well,if you reboot your server so often that you already know how longs it takes for an OK then I can tell right now that something is really wrong there.
They did it themselves.I liked Eudora and I would've pay for it if it was available for Linux which it isn't.It was their stupidity. How long do you think Netscape would've last with their inferior to IE browser without their support for so many archs.? Sorry to say but Good riddance Eudora.
Interesting numbers would be:how fast does it
compile a Linux/BSD kernel,X,KDE,whatever ,
how fast Netscape6 loads,...how do they plan to
get rid of the Cyrix "good name "....?!
No kidding.I use Telus's ADSL in BC and I'm more
then happy with it.It's way over the quallity
of what Rogers@Home has.And they don't care how
many computers I have hooked up to their service
as long as they're hidden behind a NAT box.
Here is BC at least people are moving in waves
from Rogers to Telus's ADSL .
What strikes me is:if you want a server why are you choosing a predefined task ?I would say it
makes more sense to just install and configure
the base system then get with apt the packages you
need. How is anybody suppose to guess what you
want on a server and waht type of server are you installing.
If you need to make similar configuration
than just take a look at
dpkg --get-selections
; dpkg --set-selections .
It's not Debian's fault that you don't read the docs about available packages or that you
don't ask either in debian-user or debian-devel .
Alterante if you do a lot of installs of similar machines why don't you just create your
own tasks ? It's not that hard to make a fake package that contains nothing and have only depends.
As I said, read the docs and ask in the proper
places for help .
Obviously they've seen the fate of other commercial Linux products so they've decided
to make an annoucement for a product they intend
to release "sometime real soon " and meanwhille
get some upfront money out of banner ads.
So everybody rush and click through their
pages....oh yeah and post the link to their web page more often on Slashdot.!
Is there any election coming in the state of Pensylvania soon?
Honestly,a fly_by_night shop won't care of such law and bigger companies, retailers already have similar policies in place. At least that's the case here in Canada. Is this such a new concept for
our friends south of the border?
Hmm..everybody seems to be missing one important
point here. Why do you guys think that games are
only for adults? My kids enjoy the Playstation but they LOVE the N64.And their friends too. This is
the reason that Nintendo won't go out of the market too soon. The Nintendo games are more targeted to kids and try expalinig to your 8 years old that playstation is better when he tells you
clearly that Playstation games sucks and all his
friends are playing Nintendo games which are far better and not so hard.
NO there isn't but anybody who ran Corel for more than 2 months and Debian for longer can see it.
One of the many good things in Debian is the way the system can be upgraded in place and the numbers and availabillity of mirrors. Also at
any time a user can run stuff from unstable without screwing too much the system.
Enter Corel Linux.-at any given time during
Corel 1.0 and 1.1 any apt-get dist-upgrade would've remove the corel-kde monster leaving you with twm as WM-ugh.
There is NO ftp, http upgrade from Corel 1.0 to
1.1 without downloading the whole ISO-ouch!
What Corel screwed up in regard to Debian was
the image that the users, mostly newbies with no
clue whatsoever about Linux got about Debian.
I can go on but that's enough.Let them die in peace.
> Also, how will the 2.4 kernel affect CLOS & potato when it comes out later this Autumn?
I guess in any way.I was running 2.4pre1
through pre4 with potato with no problems.
I don't see how it will affect Corel too
much unless they still use that monster
kde-corel which makes it pretty impossible
to upgrade too much. That's why I dumped Corel.Maybe you should wait and see or even
better switch now?:-)
1.You obviously don't have a clue about Linux.I'm a newbie myself but just in case you wonder you DON'T have drivers for Linux in the Microsoft way. Drivers are coming with the kernel and are KERNEL specific.Yes you can built them outside of the kernel as modules but running modules compiled for a difeerent kernel version it's not reliable for more then about 3 kernel revisions-see the Lucent modem driver. 2.It's happening, check the Berlin project. Why the heck was this moderated as insightfull since the guy doesn't even now how Linux works ???
> The best part is having them call up and ask for a "Mac Technician" (I'm just guessing, there is >no certification process for macs, is there?) Actually there is,you get the exam through Sylvan Prometric, but if you don't work for a certified shop good luck finding the documentation. And BTW is a real exam not like the PC equivalent A+ .
I would guess that the esiest way would be to make Debian the standard and have the other distro adopt dpkg and apt-get and the Debian policy regarding pacakges. This will set-up everybody to the place they belong, wannabe Linux distros out there just to make money, pushing buggy packages and libraries out the door...:-) --This post powered by Debian 2.2-potato--
Sure, why not? Or are you implying that experimental stuff should be used only by the few people who really understand it? If this is the case maybe you should rethink where Linux will be today if used only by the hard core hackers???? Disclaimer:I don't use RH nor want to but still...:-)
OK.I'm a Debian user but I do like KDE.Now what strike me here in this too long discussed topic is:Well if KDE is ILEGALLY distributing their software or as a lot of people think they are ilegally using other people's work then waht is FSF doing? IMHO they should sue the KDE project and prove that they really care about the GPL and they are ready to enforce it. Otherwise GPL doesn't have any value period. If FSF doesn't think that KDE is doing an illegal thing than they should issue a statement and let the Debian project know that is OK to distribute KDE. Honestly guys,if anybody thinks thak KDE is doing something ilegall than let's set-up a fund raising under the umbrela of FSF,sue KDE for what they've done wrong, let the court decide and close the issue once and for all.I would contribute with whatever I can spare to solve the issue. Why FSF should set this up I think is obvious.
>In any case, posters, don't waste bandwidth >spewing your vaporware crap. When > an open source software is delayed you all say >it's because development is done the "right" way >and will be released when it's ready. When a >company delays software that isn't ready you all >scream vaporware.
Maybe because when a OpenSource project is released as stable it is and it doesn't have any bugs,or they're fixed in hours?. And as for Apple they released in a year and a half about 6 revisons of MacOs8 and OS9 with no huge improvements(well except the memory usage which increased considerably from the 12 MB OS8.0 to 24MB OS9).Now this is something you can trust in a OS. Note:I don't have anything against the Apple Hardware,it's far more quallity than the PC one at the same price but they still have to prove that they cam make a good OS overall.

Honestly
Hmm,I don't know, what part of Testing and Unstable shall be made More explicit? I think they're quite clear.
Here. http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/tech/DailyNews/ skycar990907.html
