This is a part of the article I flat-out don't understand:

However, unless or until there is a way to explicitly demonstrate the productivity differential between a good programmer and a mediocre one, inexperienced or nontechnical hiring managers tend to look at resumes with an eye for youth, under the "more bang for the buck" theory.

I would say considering metrics like memory usage, processor usage, and size of the program alongside with how well and how fast it does its job would be a fine enough way to measure the difference between the skill of one programmer and another. As for the productivity, I'd take a guy who make an efficient program in 5 days over a guy who makes a slapdash, inefficient program (that gets the same job done) in 1 day.

I noticed that computers nowadays just feel slower. Windows 98 feels better than XP some days. Part of it is just developer laziness IMO.

Would you prefer a program that users 100 MB of RAM and completes a task in 5 seconds or a program that uses 10MB of RAM and completes an identical task in 10 seconds?

Developers need to figure out their priorities. You know the old joke about women and dating:

Single, pretty, sane - choose two.

It's the same way with programming, isn't it? Low usage of resources, or fast processing? Which of the two is more important in the design? (In the era of nearly 2TB hard drives, I doubt that disk space usages - at least for the program itself - is not necessarily important.)

Sounds like the Navigational deflector for a starship in the Star Trek universe.

The navigational deflector (also called the deflector dish, the deflector array or the nav deflector) is a component of many starships, and is used to deflect space debris, asteroids, microscopic particles and other objects that might collide with the ship. At warp speed the deflector is virtually indispensable for most starships as even the most minute particle can cause serious damage to a ship when it is traveling at superluminal velocities.

Star Trek may be filled with inanity and loads of technobabble, but it does occasionally have a sound basis in science.

As an aside, I've always wondered what the current state of plasma research is. When can I get me a plasma force field for my home, or my own personal lightsaber/hedge clipper/daughter's boyfriend intimidation unit?

    • I didn't have Internet access until 2005.
    • I became a heavy PC gamer around 2007.

I understand the basic appeal of Myst is its great story and puzzles. Since it seems like you know a good bit about the game, where could I go about finding the originals legally? Are they open souce/free to download yet, or am I going to have to hit up Amazon? Are there any real stinkers in the series? Etc.

Let's say I'm to hire a worker in an office. A white man and a darker-skinned man have equal skills, but the white man is more sociable. If I hire the white man, there's the risk that I expose myself to legal action.

"Equal opportunity" laws were created in part to make up for the several hundred years of injustices done to the fairer sex and the various darker skin colors in America. 16. Re:I'm pretty sure on Google, Apple Call Workers' Race & Gender Trade Secrets · · Score: 2, Insightful

"Equal opportunity" in education (grants/scholarships/financial aid) is not necessarily flawed.

"Equal opportunity" in the workplace irrespective of the requirements is flawed. I shouldn't have to hire a less-qualified person of one particular ethnicity over a more-qualified white person because I have to fill a quota.

The Wayans Bros. did a brilliant episode on this subject where Shawn Wayans was hired at a prestigious company. Despite his qualifications in the field, all he did was sit at a desk all day to sharpen pencils because he was there simply to fill the quota so the company could continue to get federal contracts. Ultimately, he screwed over the company at the last minute by quitting - thereby not meeting their quota and thus not being eligible for government contracts.

If it were the other way around - if a company had to hire a certain percentage of white people - it would certainly bother me in numerous ways if I was hired based on my skin color/nationality rather than my ability. Aside from the fact that it brings one's own abilities and prospects as an employee in question ("Was I hired because I'm qualified or was I hired to fill a quota?"), it's also downright insulting. The only situation within which I wouldn't give a damn is if I were jobless and needed the money. Then I would be happy for any work whatsoever. (That, however, is a situation universal to every nationality/culture/ethnic group out there.
