    Don't complain. I have Charter Communications in Western Mass... I pay 45/month for basic cable..

    If they raise it more.. I'll seriously consider switching to Dish (It will suck losing the ability to watch cable on my PC but thats life)

    Think about it, the police operate like this all the time when busting people for selling drugs and prostitution. It's called going undercover.

    Yes.. but there are specific rules for that.. Like the crook has to make the mention of money for illegal drugs/sex. If the cop offers money, its entrapment (which IS illegal and it will get tossed out of court).

    Wouldn't it have been lots cheaper/safer to do a lunar station ?

    They could come up with some sort of dome that they use and have the shuttle transport and install it (it would be of a minimal size - bed rooms..). They just launch tons and tons of air canisters (enough for a few months) and then launch construction equipment.

    Not if you pay for support.. they may decide that thier best support route is to upgrade you.. Then they will.. They may just FORCE the updates on you.. That is the problem.. you may need to have support and the license is such that they can upgrade you at any time for any reason they see fit... and based on the DCMA they can....

    I just thought of something.. Software Certification. What if you have software (for running.. The power grid of a major area) and its certified for version 1.2.3 of some OS.. they decide you have to upgrade and upgrade you to 1.3.0 and it fails.. What do you do ? you won't be able to back grade it.. You won't have any legal recourse to sue them (you would have waived your rights as part of the DMCA)... This is something people need to think about...

    I have only had one rebate screwed (by the post office who delivered the check 2 weeks after it expired)..

    I got 350.00 bucks of stuff after Thanksgiving and only paid 50 due to rebates( I have all but 20 of the rebates back)

    But why should the govt. do this ? Let the individual states dictate what they do/don't do in their schools... I have no children and I find it offensive that I have to pay for them to have internet access in school (where they will spend time in chat rooms/etc. instead of school work). If they want to do that at home on their (or their parents) dime.. FINE.. Thats their business. Why should I have to foot the bill ?

    Also, can you tell me how getting a bunch of 1st graders onto the internet will make them smarter ? Teach them how to read/write in ENGLISH at an appropriate level. The Europeans are able to read and write better English than most Americans can. Get the Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic grades back to a reasonable level then we can talk about getting them net access.

    I worked for 6 years in a supermarket. The distributers might make a ton of money. But the typical markup on standard grocery items is about 3 to 5 %.

    Tell that to my friend in the Sacramento area. She has been using heat because it has actually gotten to near freezing by her.

    Although I can agree.. In general it isn't that cold in CA (compared to New England or the Midwest).

    Correct.. And ? CA is Hot in the Summer, Warm the rest of the time. Normally you "should" do your maintenance when you aren't going to be needed.

    Don't most Californians use electricity for heating in the winter and cooling in the summer ?

    Wouldn't it make sense to do maintenance in the Fall/Spring when people won't need the AC or heat as much ?

    I work for an Independent System Operator in New England, The believe that power consumption in Winter is less than summer is BS. Normally Winter and Summer are the highest seasons while Spring and Fall are the lower ones. Normally Maintenance is done then (other than emergency outages).

    From what I have seen about the Cal ISO (http://www.caiso.com/) is that the cheaper generators are NOT generating. This causes the ISO to use emergency quickly on power (Jet Engines) that have the highest cost. This drives the $ amount for power up quickly.

    Oh thanks.. Someone ELSE who has a clue. We have print designers who want to do HTML. They insist on using specific fonts/etc. And when the page doesn't look right , what do they do ? They create the page as a GIF Image. The Emeril Lagasse site (Emeril.com [currently not in DNS]) had done this but got a clue. The page (on a T1 was PAINFULLY slow to load). And I know there must be a ton of others that do this.

    The biggest problem with IE is that it "interprets" what you meant. It renders bad/invalid HTML and THAT'S the problem. I mean I bet if IE said "Hey Bozo, there's no </table> tag for this... Fix it" there would be less crappy html. This is probably the reason the page failed to load.

    No.. to interpret it its more difficult... To output it ? No way.. Its developing the grammer thats difficult (like how do you represent the cost of a widget that is $ 3.54

    On one box, OpenBSD 2.7 wouldn't even let me get the filesystem initialized. It (maybe just the installer, but that's enough) has problems with big disks.
    Dunno about this. Could it have been the MBoard/BIOS ?

    FreeBSD 4.0 wouldn't let me use my COM3 and COM4 ports.
    If memory serves me right, default kernel has support for only COM1 and COM2. You need to do a kernel rebuild to access those.

    So I ended up using Linux for that project, even though the BSDs has elements that would have made them cooler.
    Which features were you wanting to use ?

    websites that have all info in non-html or text formats like doc, xls, pdf, ps - Thanks for nothing - just post the info and use html or text. More info and file formats are nice, but put the info in text first.

    Well.. I can understand this, If that's the format the users of the site want, then XLS/PDF/PS are perfectly acceptable. I do agree that 99% of the time doc files could/should be simple HTML pages (not word->html crap).

    It IS a known problem. They claim it is a PCI Conflict. OK.. fine.. If its a comflict, wouldn't you think that the driver/card would NEVER work instead of having to remove/re-install the drivers every reboot ?

    Best Tuner.. Well.. All I can say is their driver sucks. I have to delete it befor every reboot or all I can get is the "composite" input. It has some sort of "PCI" conflict.. (why it works when I re-install the driver, I don't know)...

    The problem is that, in reality unless you want to be a politician you won't run for any elective offices. The money isn't THAT great and for people like us, being out of the loop for 6 years would destroy our careers. If by some reason you were elected, would you want to try and cram 6 years of tech. changes into a few weeks after leaving offic ??

    Linux has its place and so does FreeBSD..

    As someone who uses both (since I run FreeBSD for my web servers and Linux for my TFC server)..

    I like both.. Linux does have better support for new hardware.. I will admit that.
