I just finished reading a rather large book titled "Windows 2000 Registry" and a recurring theme throughout the book was, in order to troubleshoot and restore Windows 2000 from ERD, or backup images was to have Windows 2000 installed twice on the same computer, in parallel installs, one is the "repair tool" and the other is the one you actually use, and eventually will destroy.
I suppose you need 2 licenses to do this time tested method of troubleshooting and restoring Windows 2000. It's a good thing a couple of boot disks can get my Slackware installation up and running, without the need for additional $$$ licenses and fear of the SPA raiding and auditing all my software.
They are not worth the power consumption that they require, unless you live somewhere thats really really cold in the winter, then you could heat an entire building with that cluster.
You, sir, need to read Necronomicon: In The Beginning Was The Command Line. Several times I reckon.
The GUI is an obstruction, unnecessary fluff that just gets in the way. When you are talking about servers, its about using the hardware to do one thing, fast and simultaneously: Serve The Users. Not load Internet Explorer at boot Not bring the server to its knees running OpenGL 3D screensavers, and certainly not to run DirectX games.

During the late 1980's and early 1990's I spent a lot of time programming Macintoshes, and eventually decided for fork over several hundred dollars for an Apple product called the Macintosh Programmer's Workshop, or MPW. MPW had competitors, but it was unquestionably the premier software development system for the Mac. It was what Apple's own engineers used to write Macintosh code. Given that MacOS was far more technologically advanced, at the time, than its competition, and that Linux did not even exist yet, and given that this was the actual program used by Apple's world-class team of creative engineers, I had high expectations. It arrived on a stack of floppy disks about a foot high, and so there was plenty of time for my excitement to build during the endless installation process. The first time I launched MPW, I was probably expecting some kind of touch-feely multimedia showcase. Instead it was austere, almost to the point of being intimidating. It was a scrolling window into which you could type simple, unformatted text. The system would then interpret these lines of text as commands, and try to execute them.
It was, in other words, a glass teletype running a command line interface. It came with all sorts of cryptic but powerful commands, which could be invoked by typing their names, and which I learned to use only gradually. It was not until a few years later, when I began messing around with Unix, that I understood that the command line interface embodied in MPW was a re-creation of Unix.
In other words, the first thing that Apple's hackers had done when they'd got the MacOS up and running--probably even before they'd gotten it up and running--was to re-create the Unix interface, so that they would be able to get some useful work done. At the time, I simply couldn't get my mind around this, but: as far as Apple's hackers were concerned, the Mac's vaunted Graphical User Interface was an impediment, something to be circumvented before the little toaster even came out onto the market. ------
Woah, Windows 2000 is free now? This guy is so smart, thanks for straightening me out, I'm going to delete Linux and install Win2k right now. Long Live Windows 2000 !
Do a $ grep Aug/usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt and thats pretty much the closest you can get to a BSOD dump. Of course, good luck getting the kernel to panic. The only time my kernel panicked was when I forgot to compile in/proc filesystem then tried to boot that kernel.
Yea seeing Napster on the front page of the paper and a headline on the 6oclock news is just retarded. I would rather see live coverage of Linus and Alan squashing bugs in 2.4test kernels, and live coverage of Windows servers in high visibility corporations crashing, but I can't always get what I want.
I just saw Enter Sandman on MuchMusic, and now I am humming the tune and recalling the images in my head. Did I just "steal" thier ip? Am I pirating enjoyment because I didn't pay for it twice? You can listen to complete CD's at most CD stores without paying for them too! Better call the Gestapo.
Linux is not XFree86. If you mean that DX is DirectX then yes the graphics system and drivers for Windows is advancing rapidly. Hardware vendors will do _anything_ to make Microsoft happy. How much help do you think they give the XFree86 team? Next to none, if they are lucky. The original 3Dfx drivers were binaries released under NDA by a single volunteer that were done in his spare time (thanks Darryl). You think the same amount of effort was done with Microsoft? I don't think so. It is quite amazing that the XFree86 system is as advanced as it is now, given the level of support that hardware vendors give the Open Source developers. Besides, if the Big Gorilla pays you to not release hardware specs (exclusionary contracts), you shut the hell up and take the money *cough nVidia cough*
If you think porting games to Linux is increasingly difficult, think again, check out Loki, then do some research on gaming in Linux 2 years ago.
I'm glad Microsoft has fixed this and now embeds your Windows ID# and your Pentium 2,3 (a real fast 386) serial number in every Microsoft Office document you create. Innovation at its finest.
Also...Why oh why did they turn off Napster!???? I've downloaded more than 22 Gigs of stolen music and need to steal some more! Please help me by giving me site names that will allow me to connect and steal more music! I love stealing music. Stealing allows me to get in touch with my inner-self. If I didn't steal I couldn't have things that other people have! Musicians who create the music don't need to get paid anyway because in reality they are stupid. Everybody knows musicians and singers are the most stupid people in the world. Its a ridiculous job to have if you are going to support a family.
You know I have dedicated some thought to this, and I don't really see how Napster is different than phoning your local radio station, or MTV, or MuchMusic (hi Canada!) and requesting a song. You get what you want, more or less when you want it, and you can use conventional tools to record it and then you really have it. What you are not doing is burning an exact lookalike of the artists album, and selling it en masse for big bucks. Then what are you stealing? Nothing, a bunch of Fourier vibrations.
When I want to hear a song right now, I download it off Napster, and I listen to it. If its good, maybe I want to hear more of this artist, maybe I think the artist has good music, and a good image, so I'll buy their CD, even at today's ridiculous CD prices which they said would come down shortly after the release of CD technology.
Oh and about that radio thing, I can request music, but when they play those 3-4 minute stints of ads, I turn off my radio, so no one is making money off me hearing thier music/ads. Yes I also block banner ads in my browser.
What about all the mp3s from www.mp3.com, the really free ones, or when an artist encourages the trading of thier music ? Will the RIAA attack anyone exchanging files with an.mp3 extension ? Even that cuckooeggsound.mp3 ? Sounds like the Gestapo to me.

Since 95/98 offers no security what-so-ever, the number is infinite.
Remember, Windows 95 is secure because it asks for a password (only hackers hit Cancel) !
You can block ads in your browser using software. This type of software exists for both Windows and Linux/X11. Junkbuster is one such example.
On the topic of security and Slackware, the last few Slackware 7.1 installs I've seen had /etc/shells world writable on installation.
"the html looks like it was done by someone with no clue. ie. a script kiddie. broken font tags, broken javascript and hrefs."
So you are saying he used Frontpage to make his page then?

The tcp/ip stack in OSR2 and NT4 was stolen from BSD and (obviously) modified. And questionlp seems to think so as well.
It's not called Windows 2000 for nothing =)
Yes but did you notice how its moderated up to 2 already? Hmm...
Do a /usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt /proc filesystem then tried to boot that kernel.

Unfortunately, Wine is forced to make the Win32 api interface with X11, which is just gross. Native truetype fonts anyone?
Didn't one of the Win2k developers call the Win9x line "toy operating systems" ?
Its called contracting.

Why are the above 2 parent posts +5 and +3 ?
They are frickin' one liners, Signal 11 is funnier than that. Really.
You have a choice of global install or per user install in linux as well.
It was ridiculously easy because Real or whoever left the unencrypted key in one of thier software DVD products.
If they hadn't, it still would have been cracked, only it would have taken longer, and that is why the DVD people are so god damned pissed off !
